Car fridge that fits length wise in the 2dr rear cargo area with rear seats up

In the past, I have generally only use a Yeti cooler for my camping trips. Having a 2dr means limited cargo space so a small'ish Yeti cooler easily fit and carried enough to get by.

A company recently sent me a free car fridge for review (why me? No clue - but they did).. It worked great but it was a bit to large for my little 2dr, especially when tossing all my camping gear in my topless 2dr Bronco.

Here is a shot of the one I received and how much of the rear cargo space it occupied. Once I also put my battery power bank back there, the entire rear cargo area was pretty much taken up.

Using the car fridge -v- the cooler was awesome so I began my hunt for something that would fit length wise, thus freeing up additional space in the cargo area.

I came across the Dometic CFX3 25 Liter fridge. The only bummer is the one above is a dual zone and the Dometic is a single zone. Fine by me, I don't need Ice Cream anyways, I guess...

Checking measurements for the 2dr cargo area and the Dometic fridge still said it was a no go. However they also list the size without the handles so I figured I'd give it a shot as it was close. The fridge is pretty lightweight and I don't really plan on taking it out of the Bronco when out camping so the only real need I have for handles would be to carry it to the Bronco at the start of my trip and out of the Bronco after the trip.

Since it's fairly small and lightweight, it's easy to carry short distances without the handles. If you wanted you could always bring the handles and take them off / put them on as needed as it's 4ea 5mm screws holding the handles onto the fridge.

It takes no force to close the tailgate and the fridge has about a millimeter or so of space between the front of it and the tailgate when closed. I assume if you have a tailgate table then this is not going to work.

Here are a few shots of it in the cargo area with the handles off.

The only other drawback is that the lid does not open fully due to the angle of the rear pass seat. It opens enough to get items out easily but it won't open fully. However, if I need to open it fully, all I need to do is release tension of the tie down strap and slide the fridge forward about 1".

I got it on sale for 20% off of the price, so while it was still kind of pricy, it was not as bad as it could have been.

The fridge in the 1st photo took up about 26.5"ร—17.3"ร—18" (8155 cubic inches) of space. The Dometic CFX3 25L takes up about 22.4"x13.2"x16.5" (4878 cubic inches). Taking the handles off the Dometic makes the size 19.8"x13.2"x16.5" (4312 cubic inches). While that might not sound like a lot, every inch (and cubic inch) counts in the 2dr. Even more so since I roll topless.

Anyways, thought I'd share for anyone who has been looking for a similar option. Going this route, has freed up some valuable space in cargo area in the 2dr.

Here are a few shots with the handles on and in a different orientation. In this configuration I have room for my Maxtrax Mini Traction Boards behind the fridge, the battery power bank (behind the backpack) and a backpack carrying first aid, small axe/saw combo, a shovel and an emergency tire repair kit. I didn't have room or space for the traction boards with the previous fridge so I left them sitting on the rear seats.

I still have some room between the front of the fridge and my Power Tank where I can fit my folding camp table, or my recovery and power tank gear, or my larger backpack that holds all my clothes. The lid will now fully open.

Not sure what configuration I'll use but it's nice to have options.

I just noticed this...I hope the traction boards don't block the airflow for the fridge compressor to have issues.

The Bronco would only be packed full until I get camp set up then almost everything is unloaded into the tent. The fridge will stay in the Bronco when off-roading though.

After that, the traction boards would be moved to the rear seat area. I thought about the blocking of the fridges vents, but more specifically, the blocking of the vent that is up against the rear seat.

The slope / angles of the rear seat does leave a little bit of room for it to breath. Will that be enough? I donโ€™t know but I could always stuff something between the bottom of the rear seat and the fridge to push it outwards a little and make a little more breathability space.

Also, since I am topless, I assume it's going to get a lot of air flow. Not sure if that matters for the vents or not but maybe?

I went ahead and ordered the ARB wiring kit from Amazon.

I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to wiring but I don't see why it could not be wired to an 'ignition on' only in the fuse box. Might have to swing by a car stereo place and pick their brain.

The ARB wiring kit came this morning from Amazon.

I went by a car stereo place today and the dude was speaking gibberish to me that I didn't understand. He was speaking English, and explaining what needs to be done, but everything he said is beyond me.

He said if I ran the wire and left the ends in the general areas of where they need to be that he would finish everything up for $100. I guess that's a deal so I said sure thing. Told him I'd be back tomorrow at 1. I am going to run the wire in the morning from the battery area back to the rear 12V plug then drive over and have him finish the install.

He says, when all is said and done, that the ARB 12V outlet will only be active when the acc or engine is on. I think his plan is to put the ARB 2 prong plug in the same spot as the factory 12V.

Ran the wire, got to audio place early and had them finish it up. The factory 12V in the cargo area was removed and replaced with the ARB 2 prong plug. I now have secure, 2 prong screw in connections, for the fridge and power bank. I won't have to worry about 12V plugs getting jarred out or coming loose during off-road activities now.

The ARB 12V outlet is only live when acc is on and/or vehicle running. The light in the rear cargo area still functions as expected.

I was going to attempt this on my own, but I am an electrical nightmare. I am pretty sure that if I had attempted this myself, I would have a dozen CEL's and the fridge would have probably caught fire. ๐Ÿ’ฆ ๐Ÿ‘€

My setup will be:

  • Fridge plugged into power bank via 2 prong connection
  • Power bank plugged into the ARB 12V plug with 2 prong connection

This will allow the fridge to run and the power bank to charge at the same time off of the Bronco's battery when the acc is active or when the Bronco is running. When the Bronco is off, the power bank will not charge from the Bronco battery and the car fridge will run off the power bank.

I'll set it all up tonight in that configuration and let it run overnight. If my Bronco battery is not dead in the morning, then it worked! I have a lot of errands to run tomorrow so I'll be able to check and make sure the fridge is running and the battery charging while driving.

Works as intended. No Bronco battery discharge overnight and the power bank charged while driving the Bronco!

I was on call this weekend and could only get a mile or two out of town but tested the CFX3-25 and PLB40 in the Bronco sitting in the driveway.
Alrighty then.......Got the PLB40 Friday and charged it up. Man that AC charger gets hot.
Filled the cooler with a twelve pack of sodas(pre cooled) and plugged it into the PLB40. Set the temp at 36 and let it happen. 05:00 6/22
Throughout the weekend I would go out and get a soda trying to simulate camping usage.
The outside temps varied from 40 at night to 80 during the days. Probably hotter sitting in the Bronco.
07:00 6/24 battery was drained but cooler was still 36.
Very pleased with the whole set up knowing a full 48-50 hours run time with no charging. But in the future it will be charging while the Bronco is running so very happy, Here is a shot of the Dometic app. showing temp and power consumption.
Hope this helps inform folks a tad of what to expect.

Nice, thanks for sharing!

My setup will get stress tested this weekend at Overland Expo PNW. I am also using the PLB40 but am running dual zoned. Thursday-Sunday so we'll see how it goes..

If you get an opportunity could you grab a pic or two of the new TAXA TigerMoth Overland trailer/ small habitat. I'm seriously looking but don't find a dealer in my neighborhood.
Thanks and if no time doing your stuff I understand. Have a great trip.

Since the IceCo does not have anchor points to strap it down, I ordered a set of these. They look like they might work.

https://www.daylodge.com/products/flexmounts-adhesive-anchors

FYI, don't waste your $$ on the above Daylodge adhesive anchors as they don't stay stuck for squat! I figured I'd try them but they won't stay stuck if you put any amount of stress on them.

4 day and 3 overnight trip report on the fridge and the setup.

The ARB 2 prong plugs worked great! Highly recommend using that setup if you can as I went down a very rough and technical trail and had no worries about something coming unplugged as the Bronco got tossed around.

The Dometic PLB40 battery pack was fantastic and I never even came close to running low on battery. I did drive the Bronco on Friday and Saturday for about 5 hours each day when doing trials so the PLB40 was able to fully recharge during those trail runs.

Success!

Now onto the Iceco GO20. It was fantastic and I had no issues with it at all. It kept everything cold and / or frozen throughout the trip and it performed as expected.

I might however be on the search for a more rugged option as it took a beating, even being strapped down. It was covered in dust and dirt, which was expected, and it got some minor surface scratches on the exterior and a scratch along the side from when I was removing my power tank.

I don't really care if it gets beat up but I do wonder about it's longevity under the circumstances, conditions and environment that I am constantly going to be submitting it to.. The plastic'ish exterior is shiny and might not be the best option for someone rolling topless..

Iceco makes a APL20 that is all aluminum so I might try it.. Not sure how well it will hold up but I assume a little better.

https://icecofreezer.com/products/21qt-apl20-aluminum-freezer

Anyone have thoughts on how aluminum fridge, that would be subjected to dirt, dust and whatever else the trail decides to dump on it, would fair?

Either that or I might try the Dometic again as it was pretty rugged.

I was entirely happy with my old Yeti cooler but now that I've gone down the car fridge rabbit hole, there is no going back!

Also, if anyone is interested in the IceCo car fridges hit me up as I have a 20% discount code that I was given at Overland Expo PNW. I was told it's not a one time use and can be used by multiple peeps. No clue when it expires but I just checked it and it still works.

PM me for the code as I don't want to post it here, publicly..

A friend brought me the Dometic cover this weekend as he was at some outdoor show. It was a bugger to install but it should protect the unit as well as add a little insulation. Time will tell.

I thought about getting a cover but for my topless use, I am not sure how much it would help unless it's a skin tight fit. I assume dust would still be able to get in through the vent openings etc. That might actually make it worse for me due to the dust would then be trapped inside and constantly scrubbing up against the body.

I might be over thinking this and I am not sure if that would even happen but if it's coverless then the dust will either settle or get blown off naturally by the wind.

I ordered this little handheld air blower gizmo that's pretty powerful. It will not only help with blowing dust off the fridge, but also off the interior areas of the Bronco. A fellow Bronco owner at OE PNW had something similar to it and let me try it out on my dust covered interior and fridge and it worked pretty well..

The hunt continues for a rugged option that will survive being in an open top Bronco that's subjected to massive amounts of dust, dirt, mud and anything else the environment can throw at it.

I ordered this: https://icecofreezer.com/products/21qt-apl20-aluminum-freezer

It shipped this morning so I should have it next week. I used the OE PNW discount code and it worked and shaved $100 off the price! Thanks Overland Expo PNW!

It's an all aluminum build and it's a single zone so no ice cream for me ๐Ÿ˜ฅ . It is small enough to fit in about the same space as the previous IceCo. It's a little bigger, but not by much. Hopefully it'll be more rugged since it's aluminum.

Test fit the new all aluminum car fridge in the Bronco this morning. I removed and sold the power tank and am replacing that with an ARB under the hood once that arrives.

I have a little more space now, which is nice! Since this is all aluminum, it should fare better in my topless 2DR..

The fridge vents are all clear and free of any obstructions. I have about 1/4" between the fridge and the tailgate table. If I were to move the traction boards to the rear seat area then I'd obviously have more room there as I could slide the fridge further back against the rear seat backs.

My next trip won't be until the ARB Dual arrives and I get it slapped in.. Hopefully that's soon as I ordered it a week ago but it's shipping from Ford Accessories to a local'ish dealer so no clue when it will arrive there as they don't give a tracking number.

I'll install it same day or next day then plan next trip.. I am itching to get back out and hit some trails. ๐Ÿ˜
