Car fridge that fits length wise in the 2dr rear cargo area with rear seats up

In the past, I have generally only use a Yeti cooler for my camping trips. Having a 2dr means limited cargo space so a small'ish Yeti cooler easily fit and carried enough to get by.

A company recently sent me a free car fridge for review (why me? No clue - but they did).. It worked great but it was a bit to large for my little 2dr, especially when tossing all my camping gear in my topless 2dr Bronco.

Here is a shot of the one I received and how much of the rear cargo space it occupied. Once I also put my battery power bank back there, the entire rear cargo area was pretty much taken up.

Using the car fridge -v- the cooler was awesome so I began my hunt for something that would fit length wise, thus freeing up additional space in the cargo area.

I came across the Dometic CFX3 25 Liter fridge. The only bummer is the one above is a dual zone and the Dometic is a single zone. Fine by me, I don't need Ice Cream anyways, I guess...

Checking measurements for the 2dr cargo area and the Dometic fridge still said it was a no go. However they also list the size without the handles so I figured I'd give it a shot as it was close. The fridge is pretty lightweight and I don't really plan on taking it out of the Bronco when out camping so the only real need I have for handles would be to carry it to the Bronco at the start of my trip and out of the Bronco after the trip.

Since it's fairly small and lightweight, it's easy to carry short distances without the handles. If you wanted you could always bring the handles and take them off / put them on as needed as it's 4ea 5mm screws holding the handles onto the fridge.

It takes no force to close the tailgate and the fridge has about a millimeter or so of space between the front of it and the tailgate when closed. I assume if you have a tailgate table then this is not going to work.

Here are a few shots of it in the cargo area with the handles off.

The only other drawback is that the lid does not open fully due to the angle of the rear pass seat. It opens enough to get items out easily but it won't open fully. However, if I need to open it fully, all I need to do is release tension of the tie down strap and slide the fridge forward about 1".

I got it on sale for 20% off of the price, so while it was still kind of pricy, it was not as bad as it could have been.

The fridge in the 1st photo took up about 26.5"ร—17.3"ร—18" (8155 cubic inches) of space. The Dometic CFX3 25L takes up about 22.4"x13.2"x16.5" (4878 cubic inches). Taking the handles off the Dometic makes the size 19.8"x13.2"x16.5" (4312 cubic inches). While that might not sound like a lot, every inch (and cubic inch) counts in the 2dr. Even more so since I roll topless.

Anyways, thought I'd share for anyone who has been looking for a similar option. Going this route, has freed up some valuable space in cargo area in the 2dr.

Here are a few shots with the handles on and in a different orientation. In this configuration I have room for my Maxtrax Mini Traction Boards behind the fridge, the battery power bank (behind the backpack) and a backpack carrying first aid, small axe/saw combo, a shovel and an emergency tire repair kit. I didn't have room or space for the traction boards with the previous fridge so I left them sitting on the rear seats.

I still have some room between the front of the fridge and my Power Tank where I can fit my folding camp table, or my recovery and power tank gear, or my larger backpack that holds all my clothes. The lid will now fully open.

Not sure what configuration I'll use but it's nice to have options.

I'm going to see how all the reviews and comments on this post go and give one a try.
My pickup has power in the bed.

I ordered the IceCo GO20 and I should have it before my trip to Overland Expo PNW at the end of the month. That will be a good test for it.

The 28 quart would be way to large for the 2dr. The Wolfbox I was given for review is about that same size and it takes up almost the entire rear cargo area once you put a battery pack back there.

The 16 quart is larger than the IceCo Go20 and holds less..

Unelated comment: These companies crack me up with their marketing photos though. Not just this ad as they all do it..

Here is a product image for the 16 quart. Those cans must be the 'super-duper-extra-tall-boy' cans. But how am I gonna close the lid if they stick up that far? ๐Ÿ˜œ

Really! Unless that lid telescopes upwards when shut, there's no way to fit all those cans. I'm sorry you've been disappointed by the limited selection and the unreliability. I'll be watching this thread as an on-board fridge has strong appeal.

For now, I'm using the 30-quart Ninja cooler. It stays cool for days with a couple of ice packs. I also like its dry storage drawer under the primary basin; it keeps sandwiches dry and cool.

I remember talking to you about it in Moab and that was an option especially for the dry storage but since the electric one only gets a little condensation, no more worries about soggy ๐Ÿฅช .

I am an odd use case so it makes sense there are not a lot of options that fit what I am looking for. I roll in a 2dr, with the top off for several months of the year, and I also have to load all my camping gear into that topless 2dr.

The Dometic ticked all the boxes with the only real bummer being it was not a dual zone. Add the fact that mine was a lemon in there as well. They are also very expensive.

The IcoCo GO20 might tick all the boxes but there are no tie down anchor points on it. That's not a massive problem as I'll just strap it down along it's body. The other bummer is that it more than likely will not fit in a front to back configuration.

Most people, even fellow 2dr owners, won't encounter the issues I am having as they don't roll topless and try to cram a ton of camping gear into that topless 2dr.

I could stack upwards, even being topless, and use tie down straps or bungee cords but then I'd be rollin' around looking like the Beverly Hillbillies. ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚

The price we must pay to have the classic Bronco.

2 doors do make you more creative. My 93 had a ton of room in the back, and before a more door guy chimes in, with a few more inches of room, my daily drivers are an Expedition XL and crew cab long bed and that's what have us spoiled. The difference is measured in feet or yards. You only have to be creative in how far the reach is to get stuff.

I digress to generate some smiles. This is a cool topic so let cooler heads prevail.

I enjoy taking the top off too much, so on my list is to build a trail-capable trailer to tow along with when overlanding.

The Fatty sticks arrived this morning and I could not resist eating one. They are pretty tasty and will def add them to my trail snack list. I always carry beef sticks on my off-road trips so it'll be the Fatty's or the Tillamook's.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah, that ^^^ means you are not getting any of the remaining sticks! ๐Ÿ˜œ

IceCo scheduled for delivery on Saturday.

Since the IceCo does not have anchor points to strap it down, I ordered a set of these. They look like they might work.

Alrighty then...I took a chance and ordered the Dometic cfx3 25l after your initial fit test in the 2 dr. After it was shipped I read about it not working properly of who knows what.
I have been rather uncomfortable after hearing your issue. I got this one yesterday, let it sit level for half a day.
When I plugged it in and turned it on the only way I knew it was running was I felt a tiny shudder when it started. So far so good. Twenty four hours later I have yet to hear it run.

I am going to the hills tomorrow so will see how it does in the Bronco. Sorry to hear you got a bum unit.

Pricey but happy so far.

Happy trails pard.

I hope my lemon does not dissuade anyone from the Dometic. They have very good reviews and are generally thought of as one of the best car fridges on the market. And yeah, they are expensive!

Heck it might not have even been their fault as I ordered it from Backcountry.com and there is no telling how long it sat in their warehouse. It could have been stored in non optimal conditions and/or moved / bounced around quite a bit for all I know.

My IceCo will be here tomorrow so I'll see how it goes. Dometic has better ratings and reviews than they do but I *think* they use the same compressor.

Glad to hear your unit is working great! If you can, please report back after using it on your trip as I think others would be interested in hearing more about it.

Absolutely will. All in the name of Bronco Nation info sharing.
50% why I ordered this was seeing the fit in your Bronco and my old camper I sold a couple years ago had a 40 year old Dometic in it that worked like a champ.

What config are you using it in? Front to back with handles off or side to side?

I am having 2nd thoughts that perhaps I should have just went with a replacement. Nothing against IceCo but that Dometic was pretty sweet..

I run with my rear seats down with the bottoms removed. I will use it side to side.

I have a big "Tool" everything box (about twice the size of this cooler) that rides right behind the pass. seat. It straps down to the seat but I added d rings where the rear seat bottoms attached.

Initial thoughts on the IceCo GO20 (21 quart / 20 liter) vs the Dometic CFX3 25L (26.5 quart / 25 liter).

You would not think 5 liters would make that big of a difference but holy guacamole the Dometic had a lot more interior space. The IceCo is smaller in height & width but it's the same length as the Dometic with its handles on.

Speaking of the carry handles, the handles on the Dometic are night and day better than the built in ones on the IceCo!

The IceCo will probably be fine for me as I don't need to bring a lot of food and drinks as I am a solo and generally only go out on two-day - one-night trips and I only bring basic and easy to cook food like hot dogs, brats etc. Most of my space will be used for ice cold water when out on the trail.

If you are not a solo or if you go on multiple day trips then the IceCo GO20 might be to small. Even if you remove the freezer partition and use it strictly as a fridge, it still might not be enough room unless you use it strictly for food and don't pack it full of drinks.

If you want a small and compact car fridge for your 2dr, then the Dometic will probably be the better option between the 2 for most people.

If you need / want a freezer then it's going to have to be the smaller IceCo GO20. I want a freezer section because, well - you know, Ice Cream!

I'll snap some photos of it in the rear cargo area of my 2dr Bronco later and upload them.

As with the Dometic, I can fit a lot more gear in the cargo area than I could with the Wolfbox. I did rearrange a few things as I was not happy with how my power bank secured / bungeed down.

I also have a tailgate table installed now that I didn't have with the Dometic.

I still have about 1 1/2" between my traction boards and the tailgate table where I can store something else in-between them.

Not the best day to test the dometic as it was pretty cool all day. It maintained temp easily and when the rain/snow mix forced me back in the Bronco I actually heard it running. Sitting on the factory storage compartment lid made it barely audible. I put a towel under the cooler and never heard it again.

I am currently running it off my NOCO GB70 jump pack to see how long that it will run off that.

Overall I am super happy with my choice, especially since I don't need to be "snarfing down Ice Cream" till back home!
