Car fridge that fits length wise in the 2dr rear cargo area with rear seats up

In the past, I have generally only use a Yeti cooler for my camping trips. Having a 2dr means limited cargo space so a small'ish Yeti cooler easily fit and carried enough to get by.

A company recently sent me a free car fridge for review (why me? No clue - but they did).. It worked great but it was a bit to large for my little 2dr, especially when tossing all my camping gear in my topless 2dr Bronco.

Here is a shot of the one I received and how much of the rear cargo space it occupied. Once I also put my battery power bank back there, the entire rear cargo area was pretty much taken up.

Using the car fridge -v- the cooler was awesome so I began my hunt for something that would fit length wise, thus freeing up additional space in the cargo area.

I came across the Dometic CFX3 25 Liter fridge. The only bummer is the one above is a dual zone and the Dometic is a single zone. Fine by me, I don't need Ice Cream anyways, I guess...

Checking measurements for the 2dr cargo area and the Dometic fridge still said it was a no go. However they also list the size without the handles so I figured I'd give it a shot as it was close. The fridge is pretty lightweight and I don't really plan on taking it out of the Bronco when out camping so the only real need I have for handles would be to carry it to the Bronco at the start of my trip and out of the Bronco after the trip.

Since it's fairly small and lightweight, it's easy to carry short distances without the handles. If you wanted you could always bring the handles and take them off / put them on as needed as it's 4ea 5mm screws holding the handles onto the fridge.

It takes no force to close the tailgate and the fridge has about a millimeter or so of space between the front of it and the tailgate when closed. I assume if you have a tailgate table then this is not going to work.

Here are a few shots of it in the cargo area with the handles off.

The only other drawback is that the lid does not open fully due to the angle of the rear pass seat. It opens enough to get items out easily but it won't open fully. However, if I need to open it fully, all I need to do is release tension of the tie down strap and slide the fridge forward about 1".

I got it on sale for 20% off of the price, so while it was still kind of pricy, it was not as bad as it could have been.

The fridge in the 1st photo took up about 26.5"×17.3"×18" (8155 cubic inches) of space. The Dometic CFX3 25L takes up about 22.4"x13.2"x16.5" (4878 cubic inches). Taking the handles off the Dometic makes the size 19.8"x13.2"x16.5" (4312 cubic inches). While that might not sound like a lot, every inch (and cubic inch) counts in the 2dr. Even more so since I roll topless.

Anyways, thought I'd share for anyone who has been looking for a similar option. Going this route, has freed up some valuable space in cargo area in the 2dr.

Here are a few shots with the handles on and in a different orientation. In this configuration I have room for my Maxtrax Mini Traction Boards behind the fridge, the battery power bank (behind the backpack) and a backpack carrying first aid, small axe/saw combo, a shovel and an emergency tire repair kit. I didn't have room or space for the traction boards with the previous fridge so I left them sitting on the rear seats.

I still have some room between the front of the fridge and my Power Tank where I can fit my folding camp table, or my recovery and power tank gear, or my larger backpack that holds all my clothes. The lid will now fully open.

Not sure what configuration I'll use but it's nice to have options.

I don't need to be "snarfing down Ice Cream"

Blasphemy!!!!!!!!!! 😲 😲 😁 😂 (yeah I took it out of context but... 😜)

Not the best day to test the dometic as it was pretty cool all day. It maintained temp easily and when the rain/snow mix forced me back in the Bronco I actually heard it running. Sitting on the factory storage compartment lid made it barely audible. I put a towel under the cooler and never heard it again.

I am currently running it off my NOCO GB70 jump pack to see how long that it will run off that.

Overall I am super happy with my choice

Nice! Thanks for the follow up. I have not powered my IceCo on yet as I am letting it sit overnight before doing so.

I figured mine was a one-off / rare lemon. Glad you like your unit and that it's working great!

Did you use the Dometic app?

Yes I did. Pretty simple and easy. Hoping to screenshot some data from the jump pack as time rolls on. Temp and amp draw.

I never tried the app for the Dometic. The IceCo fridge has an app as well.

3 hour run time on the jump pack before the fridge said voltage was too low..Just an experiment. Now I need to maybe look into a power supply.

How long do you need it to run?

I did a lot of research into battery packs for car fridges. When I used the Wolfbox car fridge, it used up about 180 Wh over a 12 hour period. The Wolfbox was a much larger car fridge, it was dual zone and it used more power than these smaller ones.

I have the Dometic PLB 40 which is on sale right now for a killer price. It's 40 Ah which is about 512 Wh

https://www.dometic.com/en-us/outdo...r-banks-and-jumpstarters/dometic-plb40-197468

Dometic claims it can run the CFX 40 for 40 hours but I've seen tests where it ran the CFX3 25 for almost 3 days. Of course temps, altitude etc play a role in run time.

My plan is to connect directly from the PLB 40 to the Bronco 12V port then plug the car fridge into the PLB 40. This way when the Bronco is powered on and running, the car fridge will run off the Bronco 12v and the PLB 40 will charge from the Bronco 12V at the same time.

When the Bronco is off, the car fridge will run off the PLB 40. When connected this way, as long as you are driving the Bronco, the fridge will be powered and the battery pack will be charging. When the Bronco is off it'll just run off the battery pack.

The only bummer for some, not me, is that the PLB 40 does not have an inverter so you won't be able to plug household items like a blender or a microwave into it.

Looking at the PLB 40 and that would take care of my needs. Just thought I would try that jump pack since I already one. I also like the feature to screw the plug for the fridge into it so no loose connections.

My Badlands has a 400 Watt inverter built in so blended drinks can happen.

If you have not noticed yet, unscrew the end of the Dometic 12V plug that came with the CFX 25 and you'll see a 2 prong plug. The Dometic PLB 40 has a slot that's specifically for that 2 prong. That 2 prong plug allows it to be tightened down into the PLB 40 so that bumps and rough roads wont cause the 12V plug to pop out.

Blended drinks?
Let me see if I understand correctly.
Let's say we were in Moab at your campsite. We could have a margarita?

This is a great post. Keep it going with how you power, wire and use these.
Do they automatically change between 12 and 120 like a RV fridge or do you have to plug/un plug?

When I look at something like this, I look for multiple vehicle use. For some of mine it's size, some it's power.

When I got looking at phone mounts for the bronco, I solved the problem in multiple vehicles. Even my small fleet got a fix.

@raqball your other post about the little cooler your giving away, may have solved my cooler problem when my dog crate is in the bronco. So thanks for posting that.

So, thanks guys and Bronco Nation for all the information.

Even if you don't have a built in inverter in the Bronco, or if it's not a high enough wattage, you can use a Power Bank that has built in inverters. This Bluetti AC70 for instance has a built in inverter rated at 1000 watts. I assume that's enough to power most small household electronics and even a low wattage microwave.

Here is a screenshot of the IceCo app. I fired it up this morning and set the freezer side to 0 and the fridge side to 34. It's pretty quite and got down to the set temps in about 30 minutes.

The Dometic appears to be a more rugged build. The IceCo has a shiny surface that, for my use, is going to get scratched up and show those scratches like crazy. I off-road topless and always have a ton of dust, dirt and mud collected and flung in the open areas of the Bronco, especially the rear cargo area.

I don't really care if it looks like crud on the exterior a few months in as long as it works but the Dometic would probably not surfer from this.

Thanks for the link.

The 2 pin that secures down into the PLB40 is nice as you won't need to worry about the 12V plug getting jarred out when bouncing around on the trail. You could go for hours and not know the fridge came unplugged.

The IceCo did not come with a 2 prong plug so I ordered one to use on it..

I am also considering this ARB 2 prong wiring kit to replace the 12V in the rear cargo area of the Bronco. This will give me a sold, 2 prong screw in connection, at all ends..

Start at about 2:40 of the video.

Super cool! 👍 I didn't see anything like that in the IceCo app..

I went ahead and ordered the ARB wiring kit from Amazon. I'll post where I install it and some images after it's in. Not sure when it'll get slapped in but probably sooner rather than later as I do tend to bounce around on the trails quite a bit.. 😁

I probably wont wire it directly to the Bronco battery since doing that would continue charging the PLB 40 when the Bronco is off and that would probably drain the Bronco battery.

I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to wiring but I don't see why it could not be wired to an 'ignition on' only in the fuse box. Might have to swing by a car stereo place and pick their brain.

As with the Dometic, I can fit a lot more gear in the cargo area than I could with the Wolfbox. I did rearrange a few things as I was not happy with how my power bank secured / bungeed down.

I also have a tailgate table installed now that I didn't have with the Dometic.

I still have about 1 1/2" between my traction boards and the tailgate table where I can store something else in-between them.

A few photos:

I just noticed this...I hope the traction boards don't block the airflow for the fridge compressor to have issues.
