Good Sunday Morning!
I had one of the best days ever yesterday! I should have pictures that I can steal and share soon.
The other single widow in the club rode with me as they couldn't get her Jeep in until Tuesday to look at the rear diff.
Only 4 vehicles, 3 of them were white 2 door TJs that are well modified, one on 35s and 2 on 37s. And all drivers were very experienced rock crawlers, unlike me. But, they all think osmosis was at play in the 3 decades I was a passenger.
After the 3rd obstacle, the trail leader (who also spotted me a lot on the trail on 1/1/26) came up to me and said he is gaining a whole different level of respect for the Bronco.
After a few more obstacles, all 3 TJ drivers came up and asked if my Bronco was modified. Nope, all stock suspension, same tire size.
They asked about my skid plates, all stock, except for rear shocks. This is how it rolled off the factory line. They were impressed.
The girl riding with me drives a '21 Rubi that she bought used a few months ago. She has about the same amount invested as what my sticker price was on my Bronco. I didn't mention to her that she would have way more in it if she hadn't purchased a used one.
They were also impressed with my skills. I question that, but I did feel I was less "point and shoot" than usual. Maybe I am getting better.
But, I did incur damage, but nothing mechanical. So I was able to drive the 70 miles home.
I had one mud flap leave the party. So I need to look at the inner wheel well and make sure it is all attached. And then see if I can get the other mud flap off.
I hit really hard on the front bumper on a double whammy situation (obstacle was not favorable for long wheel base). But it doesn't look tweaked. Will look again when I pull it out of the garage next time.
Then I dropped off a rock and did get the rear bumper. And then about an hour later, the guy behind me is on the radio telling me to stop because my license plate frame is hanging from the wires. We couldn't get the wires disconnected. But we were able to take one of my tie down straps and a zip tie to get it reattached to the bumper.
I can now hang up my rock crawling desires, at least for a while. And as soon as I get a job, I will look into front and rear bumpers. I successfully navigated my Bronco on the trails that were the toughest for me when I had a Rubi. And the trails were way more difficult than when I did them about 10 years ago, thanks to mother nature. So, I have nothing more to prove to myself!
Trail ratings are 6 and 7 on the trails we did, but everyone is questioning the ratings we assigned 20 years ago. We all thought these were 7 and 8's.
And 1st time I had to be winched. 3' Waterfall was a bit much for the wheel base. Sat at a 26° incline for 20 minutes while the Jeep in front of me turned around. They were going to do a strap, so I had to slide my seat back to reach mine. That was hard to get the seat back close enough for me to reach the peddles and then my seat belt was locked.
I was also a winch point. Never did that before either. And I did have to get tugged off a sandy hill in a washout area.
The guy in front of me is 79 years old. The guy behind me has been going through immunotherapy for prostrate cancer. The leader and his wife are in their early 70's. The girl riding with me is also a widow and had a double mastectomy this past June. It is these people and you people that have helped me so much in moving forward with my life and to be kind!
If you're still reading, hope you have a wonderful Sunday!
