This will be my nothing fancy 2023 Badlands 2dr build where I can keep track of all the modifications and adjustments I make to the vehicle. If you are looking for a lifted monster with 37's or above then this build will not be for you. At some point I might swap the 33" (285/70r17) for 34"'s (285/75r17) or 35"s (35x12.5R17).

A little back story. I am a long time Jeep owner going all the way back to the early 80's with the CJ 5 and 7 series, then I had a YJ, TJ and a few JK's along the way. This is my daily driver and my off-roading is mainly limited to easy and moderate trails. Nothing crazy and no extreme rock crawling.

I've always been a fan of the older Broncos but never owned one. When I was in the market for a new vehicle this time, I did briefly consider a 2dr Jeep JL but really wanted the Bronco!

Purchased on 3/8/2024. It's a stock'ish Badlands 2dr model with the only factory adds being:
  • 10-speed Automatic Transmission
  • Modular Front Bumper
  • Hot Pepper Red Paint
  • Keyless Entry
  • Towing Package

Here are my immediate plans for the Bronco:

Future plans:

  • 285/75r17 or 35x12.5R17 tires which would bump me up to about a 34" or 35" from the stock 33" and still fit the stock sized wheels I ordered w/o any other modifications
  • ARB on-board Air Compressor or Power Tank
  • 12" Infotainment upgrade package. I wanted the 12" screen from the start

I am sure there are other things I am missing and forgetting but I'll add them as I go. I'll post up photos of the mods and adds once they are completed.

For now, a photo of the day it was purchased.

Now that I'm out of the game I recommend Metal Tech, I like their design.

I believe @Roughstock11 put in the Metal Tech horns so he might be able to give you some tips.

Thanks!

I am not looking forward to removing the winch and bumper to install the horns but I probably need to get it done..

I ordered and received my Midland MXT275

  • Midland MXT275
  • Midland Ghost Antenna MXTA25
  • Mic extension cable MXTA31
  • M2M under dash install bracket (goes under dash and above glovebox)
  • TrailRax Trail Sight Mount for antenna

I thought the radio kit came with an antenna mount for the Ghost Antenna but it did not so I circled back and ordered the Midland Low Profile Antenna Cable MXTA24.

The 6 P's come to mind here: Prior Planing Prevents Piss Poor Performance

It's still the Ice Age here but next weeks weather forecast says it'll back in the 50's so I might get it all slapped in some time next week.

Not a huge rush as most of my off-road trips are solo and it won't be used much anyways.

I also want/need to order a 2nd LifePo4 battery for my TigerMoth and as stated previously, I need to do frame horns..

My Bronco is pretty much as I want it so my next focus will be on getting the TigerMoth some creature comforts like a better mattress and a few interior upgrades.

Getting ready for my bi-weekly off road trips to fire back up. Most of my camping is spent at areas without electric hookups so I ordered a 2nd battery for the TigerMoth. This will give me 200Ah of power when off grid and I have a solar panel to recharge if needed.

I'll now have 2 of these and run them in parallel..

https://www.litime.com/products/12v-100ah-group-24-lithium-battery

Should be plenty of power since my car fridge will stay in the Bronco and be running off my Dometic PLB 40 Power Bank. I'll keep the car fridge in the Bronco so I can have cold drinks and lunch when out on the trails. I generally break camp in the morning and spend the entire day on the trails.

Next up for the TigerMoth is a brighter exterior light (need to do some research) to better illuminate the pull out kitchen area and a better sleeping pad for the interior.

A few minor upgrades to add to my 'build'

  • Installed passenger side center console molle panel
  • Installed molle door pockets
  • Installed StickerFab Aux switch stickers
  • Installed 2nd battery in TigerMoth

IMG_0012.jpeg
IMG_0016.jpeg
The StickerFabs are a crap install and the radio one is crooked but it'll do. I didn't see a sticker for ditch lights so I used floods.

Added a few items to my TigerMoth:

  • Exped Mega Mat
  • Exped Mega Pump
  • New locks cfor all the doors. All keyed the same
  • RotoPax 5 gallon water jug (camp jug) with spigot
  • Starlink Mini

The Starlink Mini will be used when at camp and for emergency use (WiFi calling / data messaging etc) when out on the trails.

I ordered the new water jug because the one that came with the TigerMoth leaked from day 1 and the replacement they sent also leaks. I am over the leaking issue and decided to just buy my own..

That's it, nothing new for the Bronco.. I did lube my aftermarket UCA's and tie rods last week and I lubed up the TigerMoth as well.. The TigerMoth really needed it as the wheel bearings were almost dry..

Nothing new for the Bronco but it did get a spa day where it got hand washed, the interior detailed, and clay bar'd... It's already filthy again as I took it out on a few trails the day after it's spa day.. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Added a few items to the TigerMoth as I am trying to get it pimped out so I can take longer trips off grid while out in the middle of nowhere..

  • Trying an RV style mattress out. I got a Narrow Twin which is 30"W x 75"L x 5"H.. It fits perfectly in the TigerMoth's single bed mode. It might replace my Exped.
  • Someone gifted me a VSSL G25 coffee grinder so now I can grind coffee beans when out on my trips.
  • Swapped out my Goal Zero Solar for a Zamp Solar system.
  • Thinking about ordering a new awning for the rear pull out kitchen area.
  • Ordered a 1000 watt inverter for inside the Moth. I doubt it will get used much but it will be nice to have a 110V system that can run off the Moth's 12V batteries if needed. I do have a generator and solar but solar won't run anything 110V and while the generator will, I doubt I'd want to run it at night when trying to sleep if I wanted to run a small heater inside the Moth.. Thanks for the info on this @Sven
  • Speaking of generator, I serviced and cleaned up my old Honda EU1000i generator and put it back in service to use when out on extended trips. This will allow me, at a minimum, to charge the Moth's batteries if needed..

That is how camping works. Always changing and improving.
Ya know, if you keep swapping out stuff and looking for better, you could go from a trailer to a fifth wheel to a class C bus and then a house!
You got to know when to stop ๐Ÿ˜‰

I love my little TigerMoth and have no need, or desire, for anything larger. Solo dispersed camping is my thing and I want the ability to take it places where other, or larger, campers can't go.

I am just trying to improve it and allow me to take longer trips. I have 200 Ah of battery power inside the camper and my car fridge stays in the Bronco with a battery pack. I can charge the car fridge's battery pack while driving out on the trails from the Bronco. If needed, I can also charge it with solar or the generator. I can also charge my TigerMoth's batteries with solar or the the generator..

I think I am pretty much done with the TigerMoth except for a few minor things here and there..

I do not have AC so I bought a pretty high powered fan with a 10,000 mAh battery. It works grrrrrrrreat and will last 2 full nights of running it without having to recharge it..

Claymore Fan - Amazon Link

Water, food and fuel aside, I think I could now go off grid for as long as I want, which was the goal...

A few more changes to the TigerMoth..

I ordered an iKamper Disco about a month ago and used it on my last trip. It worked great and I'll try it again on my next trip here in a few weeks. It might end up replacing my JetBoil HalfGen stove..

I had ordered one a few months ago but either iKamper never sent it, or UPS lost it, take your pick on who you believe. iKamper gave me a tracking number but it showed that UPS never picked it up. iKamper blamed UPS and UPS said they never had it. Meh, they refunded me but the bug of wanting one stuck in my head so I broke down ordered another..

I also snagged a Devos LightRanger 2000 that came yesterday. I've heard nothing but stellar things about them so we will see how it does on my next trip for lighting up the campsite at night.. My current camping lantern is absolute garbage and needed to be replaced a few years ago.

The LightRanger should light up my entire campsite.. Fingers crossed!

I am still kicking around the idea of an awning for the rear of the TigerMoth to cover the rear pull out kitchen. Not sure I really need one since I am a wimp and plan my trips around weather.

I received the 1000 watt inverter for inside the Moth, just need to get it slapped in..

Thanks!

I've changed a few things around but for the most part, it's how I want it to be. I should have added frame horns before installing the winch. I am procrastinating on getting them because I really do not want to take the winch and the bumper back off to install them.

I can't remember the last time I had to use a winch, but I won't go out without one since 90% of my off-roading is done solo. I also avoid sketchy obstacles because I am solo. If I come across something sketchy I'll either take a bypass, or if none is available, I'll turn around and abandon the trail.

Me being solo is also what led me to beef up the Bronco steering rack and tie rods. None of those were in my original plan as I honestly didn't know the Bronco's tie rods were so weak..

Other than the 12" screen upgrade, I've not really done much to the Bronco's interior or to add cosmetics to it. Most of my adds are due to me being out in the middle of nowhere and solo..

The DV8 frame mounted rock sliders are recent add for the CO trip. I had body mounted RC rock sliders before but I didn't feel comfortable using them for rock bashing.

I also decided to add the A-Arm skids for the trip. I am not generally a rock climber and basher as it's not my jam but figured I had better add some frame mounted sliders, and the a-arm skids, before the trip. Better to be safe than sorry..

I might finally be done, or close to it, with my Bronco build and outfitting the TigerMoth.. A few things here and there, sure but I think I am close to completion..
