Car fridge that fits length wise in the 2dr rear cargo area with rear seats up

In the past, I have generally only use a Yeti cooler for my camping trips. Having a 2dr means limited cargo space so a small'ish Yeti cooler easily fit and carried enough to get by.

A company recently sent me a free car fridge for review (why me? No clue - but they did).. It worked great but it was a bit to large for my little 2dr, especially when tossing all my camping gear in my topless 2dr Bronco.

Here is a shot of the one I received and how much of the rear cargo space it occupied. Once I also put my battery power bank back there, the entire rear cargo area was pretty much taken up.

Using the car fridge -v- the cooler was awesome so I began my hunt for something that would fit length wise, thus freeing up additional space in the cargo area.

I came across the Dometic CFX3 25 Liter fridge. The only bummer is the one above is a dual zone and the Dometic is a single zone. Fine by me, I don't need Ice Cream anyways, I guess...

Checking measurements for the 2dr cargo area and the Dometic fridge still said it was a no go. However they also list the size without the handles so I figured I'd give it a shot as it was close. The fridge is pretty lightweight and I don't really plan on taking it out of the Bronco when out camping so the only real need I have for handles would be to carry it to the Bronco at the start of my trip and out of the Bronco after the trip.

Since it's fairly small and lightweight, it's easy to carry short distances without the handles. If you wanted you could always bring the handles and take them off / put them on as needed as it's 4ea 5mm screws holding the handles onto the fridge.

It takes no force to close the tailgate and the fridge has about a millimeter or so of space between the front of it and the tailgate when closed. I assume if you have a tailgate table then this is not going to work.

Here are a few shots of it in the cargo area with the handles off.

The only other drawback is that the lid does not open fully due to the angle of the rear pass seat. It opens enough to get items out easily but it won't open fully. However, if I need to open it fully, all I need to do is release tension of the tie down strap and slide the fridge forward about 1".

I got it on sale for 20% off of the price, so while it was still kind of pricy, it was not as bad as it could have been.

The fridge in the 1st photo took up about 26.5"×17.3"×18" (8155 cubic inches) of space. The Dometic CFX3 25L takes up about 22.4"x13.2"x16.5" (4878 cubic inches). Taking the handles off the Dometic makes the size 19.8"x13.2"x16.5" (4312 cubic inches). While that might not sound like a lot, every inch (and cubic inch) counts in the 2dr. Even more so since I roll topless.

Anyways, thought I'd share for anyone who has been looking for a similar option. Going this route, has freed up some valuable space in cargo area in the 2dr.

Here are a few shots with the handles on and in a different orientation. In this configuration I have room for my Maxtrax Mini Traction Boards behind the fridge, the battery power bank (behind the backpack) and a backpack carrying first aid, small axe/saw combo, a shovel and an emergency tire repair kit. I didn't have room or space for the traction boards with the previous fridge so I left them sitting on the rear seats.

I still have some room between the front of the fridge and my Power Tank where I can fit my folding camp table, or my recovery and power tank gear, or my larger backpack that holds all my clothes. The lid will now fully open.

Not sure what configuration I'll use but it's nice to have options.

Yup, I took your advice and ordered one today.
I see it doing double duty in the expedition to Costco... Lol

Question on the coolers for those who’ve used it… do you need to keep it running when not in use (like how fridges need to be kept on even when empty so the freon doesn’t evaporate through dried out seals)?

Asking since I don’t see myself as being to use it often for the next year… I think a better option 2 for me is using a simple cooler and ice to keep things cool.

Great question!

I think these are designed to sit for months being unplugged. I've not heard of any complaints about the freon evaporating while sitting unplugged in a garage (or wherever)..

Maybe some of the cheaper ones with cheap compressors need to stay plugged in? I know Dometic and IceCo use the top dog Danfoss SECOPE compressor.

I'll call IceCo later and ask as I never even thought about that since they are designed to be car / camping fridges.

Running my Dometic 35 on the PB40 at 36 degrees it runs between 48-50 hours without being charged.

If my math is correct based on my use, then that is about what I would see as well..

I've used Yeti ice coolers for years and don't get me wrong, they are great but after having a car fridge, I could never go back to an ice cooler..

I am retired and constantly losing track of what day it is.. 😂

I called my son last week and he answered all tired. I asked if he was sleeping and he said yes. I said I thought you were off Sunday and Monday. He said I am but today is Thursday and I worked last night.. 😳

Well my cooler will get the triple digit test for sure
My yeti with ice pack would give me (and my dog) cold water all day. And that's with it in the covered bed of my pickup on 110+ degree days.
This iceco will probably be in the cab. Truck locked up in the summer 130+

@raqball My cooler carrier finally arrived. Again thanks for the photos from the expo. This is the last one of the current model year. Took it for a short little get to know it drive this evening. I'm probably going to have to remove the awning for some of my adventures as it was trying to grab some tree branches on the tight little trail I took it on.
It is the perfect size for my needs. can see around it with stock mirrors and hardly notice the 1500lbs on the hwy with the 2.3l. Time to get it loaded up for it's weekend maiden voyage.
Glad I got it in Titanium as the white would have been too much.

After the maiden voyage and all the mods I'll try to post up the pro's and con's. Tonight installed the batteries and a 1000 watt inverter plus moved the tongue tool box forward an inch to allow for the cooler and my small generator if I want to drag it along.
Also noticed that the tires are Duratracs like I have on my Bronco.....wasn't expecting that. To be continued................................

Just can't leave it alone. I think us bronco folks would add mods to an anvil.
As @raqball said, start a post of the progress, changes etc.

I have a related update. I bought the dometic PLB 40 charger.
I used it in PHX for a couple weeks with the smaller iceco unit.
I had it plugged into the 12v at the rear of the Bronco. 100+ degrees and it worked great. Kept it's charg and cooler cool.
So I bought a bigger iceco unit for a trip in my truck.
Plugged it in the same way. A few hours into the trip and warning chimes go off and the PLB 40 is not charging. It's 12v plug was hot.
Tried multiple outlets and nothing.
Long story short.
Unscrewed the socket from the cord and one of the two prongs looked melted from a poor connection. Bent the prongs a little and it works for now. Back to a full charge.
Hopefully this helps someone down the trail.
