Car fridge that fits length wise in the 2dr rear cargo area with rear seats up

In the past, I have generally only use a Yeti cooler for my camping trips. Having a 2dr means limited cargo space so a small'ish Yeti cooler easily fit and carried enough to get by.

A company recently sent me a free car fridge for review (why me? No clue - but they did).. It worked great but it was a bit to large for my little 2dr, especially when tossing all my camping gear in my topless 2dr Bronco.

Here is a shot of the one I received and how much of the rear cargo space it occupied. Once I also put my battery power bank back there, the entire rear cargo area was pretty much taken up.

Using the car fridge -v- the cooler was awesome so I began my hunt for something that would fit length wise, thus freeing up additional space in the cargo area.

I came across the Dometic CFX3 25 Liter fridge. The only bummer is the one above is a dual zone and the Dometic is a single zone. Fine by me, I don't need Ice Cream anyways, I guess...

Checking measurements for the 2dr cargo area and the Dometic fridge still said it was a no go. However they also list the size without the handles so I figured I'd give it a shot as it was close. The fridge is pretty lightweight and I don't really plan on taking it out of the Bronco when out camping so the only real need I have for handles would be to carry it to the Bronco at the start of my trip and out of the Bronco after the trip.

Since it's fairly small and lightweight, it's easy to carry short distances without the handles. If you wanted you could always bring the handles and take them off / put them on as needed as it's 4ea 5mm screws holding the handles onto the fridge.

It takes no force to close the tailgate and the fridge has about a millimeter or so of space between the front of it and the tailgate when closed. I assume if you have a tailgate table then this is not going to work.

Here are a few shots of it in the cargo area with the handles off.

The only other drawback is that the lid does not open fully due to the angle of the rear pass seat. It opens enough to get items out easily but it won't open fully. However, if I need to open it fully, all I need to do is release tension of the tie down strap and slide the fridge forward about 1".

I got it on sale for 20% off of the price, so while it was still kind of pricy, it was not as bad as it could have been.

The fridge in the 1st photo took up about 26.5"×17.3"×18" (8155 cubic inches) of space. The Dometic CFX3 25L takes up about 22.4"x13.2"x16.5" (4878 cubic inches). Taking the handles off the Dometic makes the size 19.8"x13.2"x16.5" (4312 cubic inches). While that might not sound like a lot, every inch (and cubic inch) counts in the 2dr. Even more so since I roll topless.

Anyways, thought I'd share for anyone who has been looking for a similar option. Going this route, has freed up some valuable space in cargo area in the 2dr.

Here are a few shots with the handles on and in a different orientation. In this configuration I have room for my Maxtrax Mini Traction Boards behind the fridge, the battery power bank (behind the backpack) and a backpack carrying first aid, small axe/saw combo, a shovel and an emergency tire repair kit. I didn't have room or space for the traction boards with the previous fridge so I left them sitting on the rear seats.

I still have some room between the front of the fridge and my Power Tank where I can fit my folding camp table, or my recovery and power tank gear, or my larger backpack that holds all my clothes. The lid will now fully open.

Not sure what configuration I'll use but it's nice to have options.

Okay, you guys have had these fridges for a while now.
How are they holding up?

I have had zero issues with mine and it's quite nice not having to deal with ice. My new travel trailer/hard sided tent..lol should be here this week and I will be moving the fridge from the Bronco to the trailer. Will update after first excursion!

Great I will be looking for it.
I'm actually looking for one for a trip with our camper. The camper has a fridge and freezer and I was thinking one of these as an added fridge.

Apparently Covid is beating up the Houston area where the trailer is coming from and it's delivery has been delayed due to staffing issues. I'm going to get it in time for the forests to be all closed around here due to fire danger. Will update when I can.

I've had my all Aluminum one out 4 wheeling 3 times since it's arrived. Top is off the Bronco and the fridge has been dust and dirt covered from head to toe. It's even had some mud caked on it. It's performed like a champ with no issues at all. Keeps everything nice and cold.

I cleaned it up yesterday (had a ton of dust and dirt caked on it) and it still looks new. For me, rolling with the top off while 4 wheelin', I think it was the best choice. The only bummer with mine is it's not a dual zone..

Thanks for the update and link. I prefer the single zone so I'll get one ordered.

Me too. Starting to run out of good days here.
Good things come to those who wait,,,,waited 18 months for the Bronco so a few mores days/weeks shouldn't be too bad!

I got the iceco. Size looks right for the bronco and in the back of the super duty... Plenty of room.
My truck has both 12v and 110v plugs but they only power up when running.
So the battery pack is next. Because it can't hold it's cool temp for long in a closed cab over 100 degrees. FYI it can only show a max temp of 99.

So I'm in the garage thinking about charging the cooler and I spot my emergency jump starter. It's got a 12v plug. My truck has a few 120 outlets (Ford pro power).
I'm going to see if it works.

It's a no go. Only kept it going a couple hours.
Unlike your test.

If I was running around in my truck stop and go. It would work.

The Plus is it fits in one side of the dog crate. So if I only take one we'll have cool drinks.

Test fit the new all aluminum car fridge in the Bronco this morning. I removed and sold the power tank and am replacing that with an ARB under the hood once that arrives.

I have a little more space now, which is nice! Since this is all aluminum, it should fare better in my topless 2DR..

The fridge vents are all clear and free of any obstructions. I have about 1/4" between the fridge and the tailgate table. If I were to move the traction boards to the rear seat area then I'd obviously have more room there as I could slide the fridge further back against the rear seat backs.

They are called 'The Perfect Bungee' and they are! Best bungee's I've ever owned. I have 36" and 48" sized ones. The orange ones in the photos are the 36" size.

They are thick and strong. Plus I love their additional adjustability with the hook holes that are in them.

Yeah I think you are going to need a proper battery pack. My Domteic PB40 kept mine nice and cold during my 4-day, 3-night Overland Expo PNW trip and I never dropped below 60% left in the battery pack. Driving the trails during the day would keep fridge cold and charge battery pack then when parked the fridge would run off the battery pack.

Thanks for the review. The hook holes are what got my attention because I thought it was really adjustable. Am still building up my wheeling accessories and making my list based on use experiences posted here…

Yup, I took your advice and ordered one today.
I see it doing double duty in the expedition to Costco... Lol

I had a dual zone fridge on the Overland Expo PNW trip. That dual zone will drain more juice from the battery pack as it needs to keep the freezer at temps.

Since getting the Aluminum IceCo I took a 2 day, 1 night trip with it and it drew much less battery. I've also had it out on about 3ea one-day wheeling trips but that's not a good battery pack gauge as the Bronco was almost always running.

On my camping trip with the Aluminum IceCo, I got back from wheelin' about 5pm and the fridge ran off the battery pack until about 9am the next day when I hit the trails again. So about 16 hours on the battery pack and I was sitting at about 70% left.

I'm headed back out in 2 weeks for another camping trip so I'll try to remember to document the battery packs behavior at little better and report back.
