For years, Day 1 reservationists and early order holders have looked forward to a missing piece from the Bronco launch: the Bronco Trail App, formerly referred to as the FordPass Performance app.

Bronco Trail App – Ready for Use

Today is the big day. Ford is launching the Bronco Trail App at Moab Bronco Safari, and it’s available now in the Apple App Store and Google Play for free download and use. Prior to launch, the app was marketed for Mid Package Broncos and up. As of today, the Bronco Trail App’s FAQs state the app will determine if you have an eligible vehicle.

The Bronco-specific off-road app features approximately 1,200 professionally curated trail maps across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It provides the ability to record drives with waypoints, photos, and video –– and lets you share your adventure on social media. Future updates will add more trails and features to the app.

From the developer: If the app crashes on you when recording, power off your phone, restart it, open the app, and leave it running.
If you force close the app, it will crash again when recording, and you'll need to do the power-off on cycle.

Absolutely cool! Can’t wait to get out and try it. Another learning curve to adjust to though. Like my dad use to say “If you don’t learn something new everyday, your losing ground.”
I have already found a missing link to a trail I’ve been scouting on and off for years while hunting. I knew there had to be a way.

I'm just over here Happy Ford finally released the trails map. With some nice built in features.

Then Im reading 30 post about camera recording... what am I missing? Is it that big of a deal? What benefits will it give the user and others?
The camera records driving data that is presented in the footer of the video. Such as your pitch and roll overlayed over the obstacle you are on.

I still haven’t been able to get it to work though. I record the video, I tap Yes to save, and I don’t know where it goes from there.

I think with all new apps, and technology, the real test is when it gets in the hands of the end users, and that's when large or small bugs will show up, and the app designers can go in and fix whatever issues that arise. Now hopefully that is sooner rather than later. But like most everything, it will get better with time. I'm just going to sit back and let the folks that are tech savvy figure it out. And then I can learn what I need to do to fix any issues im having..... lol

I’m a visual learner. A video of someone using this from beginning til end would be very useful. I mean from downloading the app, setting it up, where to put the phone, finding the trail head, all the features available on the trail, and what you’re left with at the end, would be awesome. I know, a lot of you techies out there are thinking “where you been, living under a rock?” Well, yes, kind of. I need to see it in action, preferably in person, that’s how I learn what the thing can do. Don’t get me wrong, I love it so far. I’ve found trails near me that I didn’t know existed. I just will always feel I’m not taking advantage of all it has to offer until I see someone else using it.

I just wanna be cool like the rest of you!

Just my little bit O’ input.

Good god this thing crashes a lot. That’s like the number one rule of releasing software - whatever you do, don’t crash. I hope other people are having a better experience.

It’s garbage. I’ve had a different experience with it each time I’ve used it in the Bronco, and not once has it connected and worked correctly without some kind of error.

Downloaded without any issues. Pinpointed several trails in the area. Definitely will be using to have some fun on the trail. I'll start with the EASY trails until I can get to a Bronco Off Rodeo. 😀

Suspect this got pushed out way too early because of Jeep’s partnership with Trails Off-road. The 24 MY Jeep is supposedly shipping with a new built in trails app. At least I now know why Sync hasnt had a single bug fix in 2 months.

Happy to have it . I remember just having to get out and ride to find and explore a new trail . Most of the time it was dumb luck if you found a good one. Then there were no cell phones , GoPros and most times not even a basic camera to prove you did some awesome $hit. Real time video recording ? We had to tell a story and make people believe it !

I like it so far

Just tried it out this morning before work. Woke up early to try it, wife was equal parts confused and disappointed that I woke up to play with my Bronco instead of making her coffee.

It works pretty well. No crashes or other issues. I had to log in twice—first when I launched the app and again after I accepted the terms/conditions. But it hasn’t asked me to log in since then and I’ve relaunched the app several times.

Only two big issues:
  • There seems to be a “speed limit”, around 15-20 mph?? Hard to tell, but I’m sure it says in the docs somewhere.
  • After it records a video it doesn’t really give you a good visual indicator that it is done recording and saved the video. Just kinda silently continues about its business.

I’ll upload a video I recorded on the app later today. For now, there is coffee to be made and kids that need to be sent to school.

I’ve had it as long as everyone else - 24 hours. I tried using it with the Bronco over lunch - couldn’t get it to connect correctly. Then ran errands with it last night and tried to use from stop to stop. It’s behavior changed each time. It seems to need the app to load in Sync before it can be fully used in CarPlay. But it wasn’t loading the app in Sync.

So I can load CarPlay, open the app in CarPlay, and the app displays a message telling me to go back to Sync and verify it appears in Apps. I go to Apps, and it doesn’t appear. Only way to fix it is to power cycle the bronco until it appears.

When it does work, I can record and save the recording, but it doesn’t appear anywhere.

It’s a hot mess.

Me too. Downloaded and logged in without issue. Created my profile and loaded filters - no problem. Went to discover trails in Texas. (Especially the Palo Duro Canyon area since I'm participating in the Bronco Off-Road Connect there this weekend.) There are a total of 4 trails loaded in all of Texas! And, none are in that area. 😕 I guess I'll continue with my "onX Offroad" app for now.

Honestly, as a developer (that's not connected w/ this app in any way) one of the best ways for us to track down causes of crashes is by getting reports and info from the app when it crashed. If you're willing to share these reports with the devs, on iOS, go to your Settings app > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements. From there, turn on the "Share With App Developers". That way, whenever a crash happens, a report is sent to Apple, and it's made available to the app developers for debugging.

The reports that come in are anonymous, but they'll show things like the version of the OS, device type, and most importantly, the line of code that led to the crash. Reports from forums like this are useful, my team regularly interacts with customers of our apps on various forums for our apps, but getting these crash reports and info about what you were doing when the app crashed are most often some of the best tools we have.

(I just like to help out fellow devs - launching an app is always stressful. Seems like no matter how much testing you do, something always surprises you once it gets into the wild.)

The story talks about high frequency/high amplitude vibrations, like from a motorcycle engine. I have the 2.7 in the Bronco, so I don't have to worry about that. Maybe with the 2.3? 😉
