For years, Day 1 reservationists and early order holders have looked forward to a missing piece from the Bronco launch: the Bronco Trail App, formerly referred to as the FordPass Performance app.

Bronco Trail App – Ready for Use
Bronco Trail app video record-body.jpeg

Today is the big day. Ford is launching the Bronco Trail App at Moab Bronco Safari, and it’s available now in the Apple App Store and Google Play for free download and use. Prior to launch, the app was marketed for Mid Package Broncos and up. As of today, the Bronco Trail App’s FAQs state the app will determine if you have an eligible vehicle.

The Bronco-specific off-road app features approximately 1,200 professionally curated trail maps across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It provides the ability to record drives with waypoints, photos, and video –– and lets you share your adventure on social media. Future updates will add more trails and features to the app.

READ THE ARTICLE

From the developer: If the app crashes on you when recording, power off your phone, restart it, open the app, and leave it running.
If you force close the app, it will crash again when recording, and you'll need to do the power-off on cycle.

Dang, would have liked to try it out the past two weekends. The real time air pressure is a good add, was curious why it wasn't built into the Bronco already.

Edit: I know it shows air pressures already, hoping this app adds alerting as you air up and down

My TPMS sensors are real time. I use dashboard sensors information to air up and air down all the time.

It’s a great question. I do know that Kansas Rocks was a location where Ford brought pre-production models to let reservation holders get a sneak peak. I’m thrilled the location got some love on the app. Kansas Rocks is run by a great group of people and is a gem to wheel.

Heh. Found my first bug. Surprised Apple let this go through. After I uploaded my profile pic from my photos, the app asked for permission to access my photos. Supposed to be the other way around.

Am I understanding this correctly, you can only use the record feature if your phone is connected to your Bronco? It’s using the Bronco’s gyroscope and not the phone’s?
Depends on how the app requested the photo. If it only wanted a single photo, you don't have to grant permission for all of the photos. iOS will allow the app to access only the single photo you select for it. But… if later on down the road the app wants to allow you to select multiple photos at once, or to add photos to your library, then it will need to pop up the dialog for photo permissions. Of course, I don't know how the Trails app is doing things, as I don't yet have a Bronco - so I'm just speculating here. (Though, if Ford wants to do some trade work and send me a Bronco in exchange for some iOS work, I'd be happy to oblige.)

Also, Apple's testing isn't all that deep - in my experience, they launch your app, see that it doesn't crash immediately or abuse your phone too much, and then send it on its way. Sometimes they'll reject you for odd or silly reasons, but their job isn't to do any actual testing or QA on the app.

I meant specifically the alerting, I think jeeps honk at certain air pressures, haven't tried it yet but I'm guessing this does the same in the app.

As someone who works in technology I was super curious about how they were going to get the front camera feed piped through the vehicle's network to your phone. BUT... it looks like they may have killed that feature.

I'll have to wait for a High/Lux package owner to confirm. But if so... it makes sense, getting an HD camera feed through the vehicle's network compressed and onto your phone would have been super impressive.

My galaxy watch can get a live stream from my phone camera over BT, it's definitely doable, even in low power situations. Since I have LUX I'll be playing around this afternoon and will report back.

From what it asked on my screen it uses your phone's camera not the vehicle...

Correct, using the Bronco's gyroscope since if you were holding ur phone or if it were in a cupholder or something it could get all funky. Uses the same data the pitch/roll indicators in the gauge cluster use!

Thanks for linking the video. Any chance Bronco Nation is going to do a video on how to use it while doing trails during Bronco Safari? It would be great to see how it is used during an actual trail ride.
Yes, we are working on one! The Beta version was quite buggy so didn't want to do a full video using that since it wasn't the "consumer" version.

Okay that's what I figured.

As far as I know the Bronco's APIM doesn't have a dedicated encoder, so it would have been super impressive to get uncompressed video to your phone.

Well... I'm feeling real good about my Mid package purchase now. That would have been the one feature that would have made me regret not getting the High package.

Honestly, as nice as it is to have the front camera for certain situations, I would not want that perspective as part of a video that I would want to watch for very long. The viewing area is really small and it looks like you're going 50mph even if you're barely moving. The camera will produce much better videos.
