Theft Deterrence

My friend was visiting Littleton, CO from Mesa, AZ. Had his 2020 F150 Raptor stolen from the hotel parking lot--good area with low crime and the lot was well lit.
Reason for the post: according to the Littleton Police, it is not difficult for a bad guy though nefarious internet means to clone a key fob to their cell phone. Supposedly use the VIN or license plate to get to the VIN. Allegedly Ford Connect may provide the avenue into the cloning. Note: most all USA and offshore brands have similar openings through their "Connects."
According to the Police, once cloned they are able to quickly unlock, start, disable Ford Connect and OE tracking, then drive off.
Anyone heard of this? There is quite a bit on the internet and the personal side of this story is troubling.
Read of a "white hat" hacker who alerts the OE's when he finds a way into their systems. All--including Ford--are fairly quick to close the openings. However, my friend's Raptor was stolen yesterday, so the crooks are quick to adapt.
Through initial research I have been unable to find a good theft deterrence for our 22 Wildtrak and 19 Lincoln. Ideas or comments?

In my 73 Nova I purchased a time delay fuse box. It was wired to the ign. It would let the car run about 2 minutes and then go dead. The logic was the crook would be in the middle of traffic by then, the car would not start and they would run from the car for fear of getting caught by police. The delay worked well. I forgot about it once and got in the middle of traffic. The police pulled behind me while I had the hood up and was resetting it. Problem today there are not enough police.

I feel like I have the best Auto-Theft device. --
In an unpublished novel I've written, a Utah farm girl is dating a privileged Harvard guy with a drinking problem. They leave a Boston restaurant, and he's sloshed. T3hey go to his Land Rover Defender 210 (classic-3 sticks).
"Lars, give me the keys, you can't drive."
"I got to. It's got a schtick stiff."
"No, Lars. I'm driving. The keys, please."
"You can't drive this thing. See, it's got a stiff stick."
"Lars, I was driving tractors when I was five. Now give me the keys!"

Anybody know a literary agent?

I tell you, this book will sell. The protagonist (the girl's true love interest, not "Lars") grew up, literally, in a junk yard, and is an automotive genius. "At nine and ten, he figured out how to tear engines- and farm machines apart. At ten and eleven, he could put them back together. And at eleven and twelve, he made them run. He duct-taped blocks to the pedals and drove his Franken-cars all over the back roads of Box Elder Count, and even into Idaho and Nevada."
Find me an agent!

I’d say simply removing your starter relay and/or fuel pump fuse would give your vehicle a great deal of theft protection… would not hurt to know where those components are located anyways.

Also good idea. Just have to open and close the hood, etc. every time you get out. Folks now wait for you to get out of the car at gas stations. They jump in and are gone. Take the gas hose and all. Some cars taken with family members in the car. The two I read about they let them out down the road, but they still took the car.

Hmm this is an interesting thread. I been thinking about this conundrum and for the truly paranoid (all in my circle and orbit), a last resort anti-theft idea. Pop your hood, close and lock vehicle, open hood, disconnect battery, close hood. Unlock with key, pop hood reconnect battery. Start car, quick recalibration and you are off and running. I have had my battery disconnected overnight and haven’t even lost a radio channel.

unless you bought a canada bronco then you have to change back to mph, mpg and temp. no biggie but it gets old quick. still better to do that then deal with an agent

I have often thought about a relay or switch somewhere. That the owner could press or flip that disconnects the power supply within the vehicle, although the reset every time would get annoying.

hide a battery disconnect under the hood. i have one, but it's to kill power if my winch decides to take off

I started this thread...I'm typing this today as I have personally seen that the Ravelco stopped a theft of a GMC 2500. Guys were caught in the act with a computer hooked up but they couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start...busted and cuffed.

Who would steal a 73 Nova? outside of Yenkos

I had a 68 Skylark I never took the keys out of it and would park it across the street from where my gf (at the time) worked in a restaurant until midnight, no one ever stole it.

Actually there are plenty of police, just have to get em out of DD.

There have been a few discussions about vehicle security in the past. Take a look at this thread.
https://thebronconation.com/general-bronco-discussion-n.139/ravelco-anti-theft-t.10368/#post-150694

@NT AUTOMOTIVE used to frequent the forums until he sold his Bronco. Not sure if he is still selling his products or not.

Hi guys n gals. Thanks for the nod @Deano. We're still here just not as much and we do miss our 2021 BL Bronco MT.

Check out the pedal guard (pedal lock) feature built into the sprint booster throttle controller we sell here on Bronco Nation.

When it comes down to security, you want overlapping deterrents whether its for protecting your home, car, identity, border etc. The pedal lock is another security layer and a great one you can install yourself without voiding the factory warranty and for much less than the Ravelco system...which is also a good security system to add but its more expensive and requires professional installer + key hole drilled in your dash.

See the pedal guard video tutorial we made below showing how to SAFELY arm and disarm your gas pedal to protect the vehicle against theft.

You can also see the products we offer by searching us organically on Bronco Nation in the "Accessories" section of the forum under "Practical Modifications". Our threads also include old Bronco Nation forum link showing other BN member reviews of the product(s). BTW we sell sprint booster/pedal guard for less than anyone else.

If unsure buying from us because you don't know us just know we've been members here almost since inception a few years ago with a good reputation here, a previous Bronco Owner and we've been in the automotive security biz via retail, wholesale and dealership applications well over 30 years. Check out some of our videos embedded in our sprint booster purchase link below for a little more history on us.

We also sell low cost ($20) traceable security tags we mfg in-house made just for Bronco or Bronco Sport trims that include a lifetime registry membership for police to contact the rightful owner in the event your vehicle is stolen and recovered by law enforcement even with the vin tags removed.

Hope this helps!!

My only question with the SB- what if the thief rips out the product, how would you unlock the pedal then???

I've had two trucks stolen. One was dragged onto a flatbed car carrier and physically taken. I could see the skid marks on the pavement and the police agreed that was the theft method. The second truck was grabbed using a tow truck that had a vehicle underlift. I could see black wheel marks on the concrete pad where they had used hydraulic wheel lifts under the rear wheels to turn the truck around so the tow truck could grab the vehicle from the rear using the underlift.

An ignition disabler would have had no effect on this type of theft. In a lot of cases, the thieves don't care if the vehicle starts as it's going to a chop shop to be parted out.

For my last two trucks, I had a GuidePoint system installed. It is a GPS-based system with a cell phone auto-dialer. If the truck moves more than a set distance from the parked location, the vehicle automatically calls the GuidePoint 24-hour monitoring center. If the vehicle calls, GuidePoint handles contacting the local police, tracking the vehicle, and coordinating the location with the local police.

The only time it will not work is if the vehicle is out-of-range of cell phone connectivity. You can check the operation of the system as you have a GuidePoint account with a login and can check the vehicle's current location at any time.

My only question with the SB- what if the thief rips out the product, how would you unlock the pedal then???

@adcam If the theif cuts or rips out the LCD controller used to arm pedal lock (without damaging the OEM throttle harness) but the SBV3 harness is still connected to the gas pedal--the pedal lock will still remain LOCKED. For example, if storing your vehicle for long period or you just want extra protection just lock the pedal then simply remove the LCD controller from the SBV3 harness and take it with you, all the while your pedal will still be locked essentially forever until you either uninstall the SBV3 harness OR re-connect the LCD controller and enter your unique 3 digit PIN number used to lock your gas pedal.

If a thief disconnects the SBV3 harness from the pedal assembly, he or she has to at least wait for the vehicle ECU to power down (10-20 min) before they can disconnect the pedal lock. *If they don't wait for the ECU to power down properly then the dash will light up like a Christmas Tree and the vehicle will not work properly until the ECU sequence has been performed correctly. Note, the vehicle is NOT damaged in any way if Christmas Tree happens nor would this ever happen while the vehicle is in motion (only at install or uninstall). Nevertheless you do have to turn the vehicle off and follow the same install steps used to install the device in order to properly uninstall the device. Christmas Tree would also arise if the thief gets the car started and try's unplugging the harness while the vehicle is still ON.

Most car thefts happen in 5 minutes or less. No car thief is going to wait around for the ECU to do its thing, uninstall SBV3 etc. Plus if the vehicle smart key (fob) is nearby it can also affect the uninstall/install process, however, on the other hand most car thieves don't have the keys so this isn't a big point but rather just one extra note to add.

99% of car thieves wouldn't know what to do if they broke into the car + got it running then discovered the pedal was armed. And even if they did it would take too long for them to figure out what's going on followed by correctly disconnecting the pedal lock unit (sprint booster harness) from the pedal assemly without Christmas Tree.

IMHO pedal lock will deter 3 out of 4 car thieves = 75% reduction in car theft. Not bad

I hope this helps and Thanks for the great question!!

Sincerely,
-Tiff

So, making up your own statistics = "not bad." Hey, why not go for 100%? Pedal lock would stop a drive away, but would do nothing for a vehicle being hauled away. Maybe you could make up some statistics for drive-away thefts versus haul-away...

I personally would put two air tags or more on a vehicle because thieves may look for them, and if they find one, they are more likely to stop looking.
