At 3am the smoke detector starts chirping because the battery is low. Dig through the ā€œjunkā€ drawer for a 9V battery, find every battery but the 9V battery that is needed to silence the chirping in the smoke detector. Of course the chirping woke up the puppy who needs to go outside and itā€™s 23F out.

While out walking the dogs I remember that my pin pointer I use when metal detecting has a 9V battery in it. Get back from walking dogs, grab the battery out of the pin pointer and put it in the smoke detector.

Now here I am WIDE AWAKE at 4am.

Guess I will start the coffee and start on breakfast for everyone.
Soā€¦..I finally manage to get back to sleep around 5am 2 hours later the smoke detector outside the bedroom starts chirping. I have neglected to change the batteries in them in the last 3 years. :( I will be changing the batteries in all of them today.

When is the last time you changed the batteries in your smoke detectors?

Sorry to laugh. But, Jeff decided it was way too much work to change the batteries, so he took them out. He's confident that a fire will only breakout while we have electricity.

Happy Post-St Patricks' day - hope everyone's staying hydrated and has some ibuprofen!
So - since we're hanging out here at the bar early on a Saturday morning - let me share my woes ...
Last year I went to see a neurologist because I was having some neck pain in the same area I broke my neck 22 years ago in a mountain biking accident. As part of my exam, the neurologist noticed a slight shake in my right hand, which led him to ask me about my sleep. So he told me he wanted me to get a sleep study done.. while I was waiting to be scheduled for that, on 9/28/22, I had a TIA (mini-stroke).. scared the hell out of me - turned out my blood pressure was over 200/100 .. I had no idea I had high BP.. so we started me on meds for that, and the neurologist needed to do a follow up to try to determine the cause of the TIA, so I finally got in to see him again in Feb, and he did an EEG .. he called me this past Wednesday to tell me there was abnormal brainwave activity and electrical pulses happening in my brain that could be an indicator of future risk for seizures or a full-on stroke. FAN-F'ing TASTIC. He tells me I need to make sure I'm staying well-hydrated (I'm notorious for being bad about drinking water, so now I'm forcing myself to have at least a gallon a day), never skip a meal because hypoglycemia can trigger an event (I never skip a meal so that's not a problem), get plenty of sleep every night and be diligent about getting to bed by 10p every night (ok, I suppose), and ... NO ALCOHOL... NONE.. Period. This is a bummer.. I'm a bit of a Scotch Whisky lover. I belong to a few Scotch/whisky groups, and have a nice collection of Scotch, Irish and American whiskies. So, as I sit here at the 'bar' drinking an Iced Tea, this is my message to all of you stubborn old guys to stay on top of your health.. get your annual physicals and blood work, if something feels 'off', talk to your doctor about it, check your blood pressure regularly ... cheers.

I have worn an Apple Watch for a few years, and as with all things technological, the watch has improved and now provides more and more insights to health than ever beforeā€¦

About 2 months ago my watch started throwing codes (alerting me) that I was experiencing possibly A-fibrillation with high heart rateā€¦. I didnā€™t think much of it since my HR has always been irregular, but decided to go in and have it checked out anywayā€¦. Long story short, A-fib IS a big deal, and can lead to lots of bad things, including stroke and heart damage due to the constantly high HRā€¦. Also had to do a sleep study and it seems a CPAP machine is in my futureā€¦

I had NO symptoms in terms of chest pain or anything like that. LESSONā€¦. If your watch suggests you have something going on inside you, GET IT CHECKED OUTā€¦. I have six grandkids I would like to watch grow up so we can go off-roading together, and health has taken on renewed importance. Taking great care of your Bronco is of little value if you arenā€™t healthy enough to enjoy it!

Wow - right on, glad you got that notification.. yeah, AFIB is no joke - I was diagnosed with that back in 2014, I ended up getting a catheter ablation done, which got it under control. Sleep apnea is a huge contributor to AFIB... happy to hear you caught yours early!

Thank you for sharing this! Now to get Jeff to read it. I was an indoor cycling instructor and a regular group fitness junkie. Until the shut downs. I was just put on blood pressure meds for 30 days and have to go back and have it checked. I don't want TIA's and I know I don't want seizures (Jeff has a history of them). And hydrating can help so much of this. So, I will sit with you and have some ice water!
