Hi all,
Though some of you may know this, many owners will not, so consider this a "Public Service Announcement".

Ford is now selling your driving data to a company called LexisNexis. This company is a New York-based global data broker with a “Risk Solutions” division that caters to the auto insurance industry and has traditionally kept tabs on car accidents and tickets.
However, it turns out that LexisNexis is using your driving habits (acceleration, hard braking, speed and how fast you take corners) and forwarding this information on to insurance companies that then increase your insurance rates.
Now, you may say, "I am just your everyday driver and so don't need to worry about this, but if you read the following article you may decide otherwise.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/11/...l&utm_content=article&utm_campaign=email-2022

If you are concerned, you have the ability within the Ford Sync system to turn this data collection off.

Not sure where you worked, but here in CA the CHP will give their mother a ticket for being 1 MPH over the speed limit. Those guys have NO sense of humor. 😅 The only person who I ever heard about getting out of a ticket from the CHP was my late wife. She was an ER nurse, and would lead with "hey, haven't I seen you in my ER" when the cop walked up to the window. Worked every time. No cop wants to wake up in the ER and see someone they just gave a ticket to staring down at them asking "how much does it hurt? Oh, a 10? OK, I'll be RIGHT back with those pain meds" ... and then disappear for 30 minutes. LOL
In California they have bigger issues. Years ago on a road trip everybody was flying past me including the CHIPS. When I was at a gas station I asked an officer and was basically told unless I was driving wrecklessly or too far above the limit they didn't care. FWIW southern Cali freeway flow of traffic is about 15 above the posted limits.

Well, then I have an issue. I don't think abnormal acceleration data or abnormal braking data correlates to bad driving habits that suggest higher group rates for individuals.

Analyzing data out of context is bad practice. But when the results are higher premiums for a population, well who cares, because everyone gets screwed.

Base an individual's rates on his driving record, I'm fine with that approach. That's how it used to be done.

No longer being in the insurance industry, I cannot say for certain, but I would strongly suspect the math says differently and that there is strong correlation - perhaps, even information available to suggest causation. The folks doing the math will have passed all actuarial exams 0-4 and at least exam 5 (and their work is likely reviewed by someone who has passed levels 6 and 7) - and those exams are very difficult and require an extreme expertise in statistics and probability.

Your rate was never based on your own individualized record. It was based upon statistical tables of individuals with driving records like yours. Again, data built from the individual level up and aggregated into cohorts.

Back in the day it looked something like this:

It's called reaction times. WTH?!
Also would they prefer you hit deer, children that dart in traffic ect? Pretty sure that would cost them alot more.

I have a box on my window in the bronco for state farm. They use the data to lower my rate, and state they won't use the data to increase it.
I had it before the Bronco, and I drive pretty easygoing. But on the Bronco, I get all sorts of notifications for taking corners too wide or accelerating too fast. I think it has a sensor that gets tripped due to the body roll of the Sasquatch suspension when going around traffic circles or just moderate acceleration. I never had that show up with my old car, a 2014 Ford Focus sedan.

If you are in California you could contact Lexis-Nexis and tell them to delete all your information, then tell ford to stop capturing it.
Definitely turning it off makes a lot of sense.

I had that State Farm sensor on my 2019 Mustang. I was setting it off 20 times a day. The notifications drove me nuts. I ripped it off. I would rather pay a few dollars a month more for my lead foot. They absolutely use it to set your rates.

Funny you mention that I was kind of wondering if the Bronco's body roll and nose dive breaking would be problematic. Obviously most things off road would be troublesome.

I've never seen it log an offroad adventure. It seems only to log when on a road. Or that's the only log I have access to.

Hey MWNew,
You can turn it most of it off by going to your screen in your Bronco and clicking on the Settings button, then Connectivity/Connected Vehicle Feature. One of the lovely options there which will be enabled is Driving Data. You may want to disable some of the others settings too.

There is a standard SAE Data Sharing (connectivity) icon, it is impimprinted on the lower right cocorner of the driver's door window glass. See page 434 of the owners manual.

When you turn off all connectivity via the TV screen, a faded-out connectivity icon with a cross-line through it sits up in the right upper corner of the screen indicating the car connectivity is disabled.

a long time ago, i realized you have two choices....disappear into the mountains to live like a hermit, or just lean into it & embrace the fact that google & apple will know more about you than you do.
If someone knows more about you then you do then you're being gaslit or you have dementia.

There's no real owners manual in the traditional sense. It's digital, you use the touchscreen to bring it up. Super useless if the vehicle is out of commission or powerless and your trying to use it for troubleshooting. There are some folks who have created and are selling paper versions.

One other issue with the data collection, which was pointed out in the NYT story, is that your insurance is tied to a driver, not a vehicle (other than collision costs, but that's not what we're talking about here). The driver in the article was a very safe driver, who did not brake or accelerate hard....his wife did. But the car doesn't know (or differentiate) who's driving.
