This is not intended to be a full how-to guide... there is plenty of those on the internet. More just a quick reference for those who already know how to do oil changes and just want the information without having to watch a full 10+ minute YouTube video on the subject.

If you have a favorite video (perhaps one you created yourself), or have some helpful tips, post it!!

It should be noted that Ford has also stated that 7.0 quarts will not harm the engine.

PSA for those who have a 2.3L. Did another oil change today… and I’ve found that using a cap-style oil filter wrench (looks like a giant socket) is a lot easier to use to get the oil filter out than pliers or one of the spring-loaded adapters.

Size of the Motorcraft filter is 74/76mm, 14 spline.

Using pliers the universal wrenches will still definitely work, that’s what I did for my first oil change. But cramming your hand in there will require some patience and using this cap wrench was substantially easier.

On 2.3 L with metal pan and metal drain plug, verified by Ford parts, does the oil filter come with a washer? All european cars have a compression washer that is one time. Cost $.10. Some come in box with filter some have to by separate! Does a washer come with or above says inter-grated in bolt?

Here is a post on 2.7 L ego boosts. do you agree?

"The drain plug for EcoBoost engines with a plastic oil pan is a one-time use plug. Ford has not offered any official guidance on these drain plugs, so why would we say that? First, look at other OEMs that have applications with plastic oil pans and drain plugs– BMW and Mercedes Benz for example, both have applications with plastic drain plugs and theirs are specified as single use. The second issue, and this one could lead to leaks, is that the plug features a silicone O-ring, which like any other silicone O-ring, has a finite amount of time that it will last while subjected to extreme heat. Some users have tried to re-use the plug for multiple oil changes and found that they start to leak rather quickly. So even if the plug itself doesn’t break, the O-ring will not last.

Why take that risk? We decided to go a step further and had a conversation with a local Ford parts counter. They confirmed the lack of official guidance or any sort of TSB, but did say that retail customers were replacing them every 2 oil changes. When we asked about what the service department was doing, we were told that they’re using a new plug with each oil change service."

Unfortunately, today while getting at a Ford dealer my first $70 oil change i asked the service advisor if it was plastic plug. He does not know the difference between 2.3L and 2.7L oil pans and drain plugs. He says reusable. Well the metal 2.3L has some built in metal gasket under head of bolt. As stated European cars state the compression washer is one time. Maybe Ford want you keep going to dealer and seeing new latest and greatest. Well a Bronco is a Bronco, a horse by a different color. Had 5G V8 Eddie Bauer loved it but hauling a 25 trailer ran out of gas @1/4 tank, unhitched traiker ran to gas station. Same dealer still dont horses. Was just short wheelbase and tongue weight on rear! Now going to 8200 # DEFENDER and grandson gets Bronco!

On the 2.3L engine, the oil plug gasket is integrated into the plug itself. It does not have a separate crush washer like many other vehicles. The oil plug only needs to be replaced if there is damage to the gasket. The oil filter on the 2.3L engine is a spin-on oil filters that includes an integrated rubber O-ring that will get replaced when you change the oil filter.

On the 2.7L, the oil plug is plastic with O-rings. It only needs to be replaced if there is damage to the O-rings. There is also O-rings on the oil filter housing itself, and those should be replaced every oil change. Unlike the oil plug, the oil filter is under pressure from the oil pump, which is why Ford recommends replacing the O-rings on the filter housing with every oil change.

Obviously use your own judgement. If you want to be on the safe side and replace the oil plug with every oil change, you can. It's probably a huge waste of money, but up to you.

Here is what I purchased. I will attach a clear hose to it so it will drain straight down into the oil catch container.
Changed my oil this weekend. This is the first opportunity to install my Ronin Oil Pan Plug. I guess I won't know if it performs as advertised until the next oil change but I took some pictures so at least you can see how it all looks.
Here is what the assembly looks prior to installing it and the 2nd picture is what it looks like under the gold cap.

Ronin Oil Plug End.jpg

There is an attachment that screws in end which is supposed to control the flow. The more you screw it in, the higher the flow. So even if you don't put a hose on the end, it will still keep the oil from flying everywhere. Here are a few pictures of the attachment and the hose assembly.

Few more pictures.

Here's a picture of the plastic 2.7 oil pan with the stock replaceable plug removed.

Remove the gold cap and screw in the adapter.

Here is what it will look like when I drain the oil. I am hoping the hose is flexible enough to allow me to screw in the adapter and still keep the hose pointed towards the pan.

I am buying that! Right now!
I think I’ll make the hose shorter and put a 1/4 turn ball valve on it. It will help keep the inside of the hose clean.
