Bronco Tool List: If you're building out a tool roll this list is for you.

I haven't found a good list anywhere and as easy as it is to go buy a cheap tool set and hope for the best I found the time to document some of the specific tools I’ve used so far to work on my Bronco and finally build out my Bronco Specific tool roll. This also should cover tools needed for oil changes, removing a wheel and repairing/ replacing the tie rod (which I’ve not done). I’d call it a start of a minimum but not all inclusive list. This does not replace the Bronco provided toolkit. I’d recommend you keep that with you.

Comment below with any must have additions (and why). I'll update as needed.

  • Wrenches
    • 10, 13, 16, 17, 19, 21 mm

Not really tools but flares, flint &steel, and a skinny flashlight are good ideas.

I replied in an earlier post on this thread that I would add items if I felt they were important and I managed to recall some must have items:
Metric crescent wrench
Pint of low viscosity blinker fluid
Henway
8/16" impact socket
Wireless cable tester
Left-handed screwdriver
Oscillation Overthruster
Reversing bolt stretcher
Box of assorted ohms
Spare diesel spark plug gaps
Bottle of unfreezable winter water
Spare key for the vapor lock
Bearing grease for the compass
Long weights

A P-38 with operating manual, preferably not in Chinglish. (How many of you know what the P-38 is, without googling?)
Also, a metric confabulator.

I think the denizens of this thread will appreciate the following column on being a "toolaholic:'

To those of you with serious ideas for a basic tool kit, thanks--many very good ideas.

Nice!! I had a list like this going as well, but you are a lot farther along than I was.

The 5/32 allen on your list is actually a 4mm allen. But other than that, looks great!

---

As an aside... for anyone who is just starting their mechanics tool collection... below is a starter list. Obviously everything on the list below is going to be way overkill for a portable tool roll setup. But thought I'd mention it just in case someone needs it.

  • Most sockets 6mm 🡢 36mm
  • Most Torx bits from T10 🡢 T50
  • A handful Torx Plus bits as well. TP40 & TP50 are the only two I've come across, but there are probably others.
  • Allen/hex set 4mm 🡢 ??mm. I've only used up to 10mm, but @ne2000 has 13mm on his list, so maybe I just haven't seen the full spectrum yet

You DO NOT need any SAE tools for the Bronco. The only exception to that rule is if you tow, as most tow balls have a 1 1/2" nut to attach a tow ball to the hitch. Unfortunately a lot of the accessory vendors will use SAE components rather than metric, so over time you'll probably find yourself grabbing SAE stuff as well. But I'd personally save yourself money, buy only metric, and slowly expand into SAE as you need it.
Hey RagnarKon,
I am curious, what did you use the 36mm socket on?

I know it's more fun to build out your own kit but has anyone found a good starter bundle package online ?
The gear shop has a neat little tool role for basics,, just go to the shop gear and enter tool role in search bar .

I bought a small set of torx+ bits as it seems most of those on the bronco are torx+ and I don’t want to chance stripping a head…

I know what a P-38 is, and it’s not a plane. It’s come in handy on a couple of trips that saved us some major headaches.

I carry two fold up shovels, one for digging and a snow shovel for scooping( works well for sand too). Rope or paracord. And the most expensive important thing off all, a tool of TP, most good trails don’t have rest stops.

Most bronco fasteners are actually torx plus or TP. Torx plus is an advanced version of torx that works better.

Love this thread - just what I was looking for as I put together a toolkit for Bronco basics and accessories. A few follow up questions -

Is there a tool bag/management solution folks have found that works well under the back near the jack storage?

What brands are your go to keeping in mind the competing words of wisdom of be prepared to drop and loose items on the trail and needing it to perform as needed for the same reason?

At the moment I'm using the tool roll on the Bronco Nation gear store. At some point I suspect I will outgrow that solution, and I'll have to come up with something different. But for now it's working great.

As far as the tools themselves go... a lot of it has just been spare tools I've collected over the years. The tools that I have bought have all largely been Tekton tools. "Good enough" quality that they are unlikely to break out in the field, but still decently priced and it doesn't feel like you are buying Snap-On or Gearwrench.

Another thing I really like about Tekton is you can buy individual wrenches/sockets/etc. should you lose one. There are a lot of brands that are in the "good enough" category—but usually to hit the price point they are sold at they force you to buy the entire kit. So the ability to replace individual tools is awesome.
