I haven't found a good list anywhere and as easy as it is to go buy a cheap tool set and hope for the best I found the time to document some of the specific tools I’ve used so far to work on my Bronco and finally build out my Bronco Specific tool roll. This also should cover tools needed for oil changes, removing a wheel and repairing/ replacing the tie rod (which I’ve not done). I’d call it a start of a minimum but not all inclusive list. This does not replace the Bronco provided toolkit. I’d recommend you keep that with you.

Comment below with any must have additions (and why). I'll update as needed.

Off the top of my head, I might add a length of general purpose wire (not stranded, and not for electrical repair). I can't recall how many times when I was growing up when my Dad had to wire something up to the chassis (like the exhaust). He always kept some wire in the kit. A dead-blow hammer can be very handy. Some electrical tape (general fix-everything gorilla tape is also a good idea). A roll of shop towels and general purpose cleaner. I'll add more if I think of something truly useful.

Nice!! I had a list like this going as well, but you are a lot farther along than I was.

The 5/32 allen on your list is actually a 4mm allen. But other than that, looks great!

---

As an aside... for anyone who is just starting their mechanics tool collection... below is a starter list. Obviously everything on the list below is going to be way overkill for a portable tool roll setup. But thought I'd mention it just in case someone needs it.

  • Most sockets 6mm 🡢 36mm
  • Most Torx bits from T10 🡢 T50
  • A handful Torx Plus bits as well. TP40 & TP50 are the only two I've come across, but there are probably others.
  • Allen/hex set 4mm 🡢 ??mm. I've only used up to 10mm, but @ne2000 has 13mm on his list, so maybe I just haven't seen the full spectrum yet

You DO NOT need any SAE tools for the Bronco. The only exception to that rule is if you tow, as most tow balls have a 1 1/2" nut to attach a tow ball to the hitch. Unfortunately a lot of the accessory vendors will use SAE components rather than metric, so over time you'll probably find yourself grabbing SAE stuff as well. But I'd personally save yourself money, buy only metric, and slowly expand into SAE as you need it.

Thanks I reviewed the instructions for all the accessories I've installed and they had 5/32 mentioned. Like you said trying to keep this limited for a portable tool roll situation.

Ah gotcha. Pretty sure Ford does use a 4mm for the Bronco, but it's behind the dash and not something you'd use in a tool roll. That said, if the 5/32 was for an accessory that makes sense. Never mind then.

Do you remember what the 13mm hex was used for? I may have to expand my hex collection.

I may have messed up my notes and may have just been a 13mm Socket or my fairlead bolts as I'm not finding it at the moment.

EXCELLENT thread idea! Especially for all of us DIY'ers. One thing that came to mind was a soft panel removal kit. There are a bunch on the market. They consist mainly of a collection of plastic pry tools that are used to remove the numerous plastic trim pieces for access to other serviceable components or subassemblies. I highly recommend getting one of these.

Otherwise, I applaud your list of basic (and some not-so-basic) tools. Great food for thought, especially now since I got a couple of Amazon gift cards I don't know what to do with!

I would include plastic pry tools (for panels), as well as a plastic rivet remover, as almost all interior panels, as well as many exterior pieces, use plastic push connectors (or some rendition of such)

If your gonna add the grab handles above the drivers door you will need and 8mm socket. I do also recommend going from 6mm-27mm on the sockets. Also anything above a 15mm I would go with 1/2 drives. Under Misc. add a knife, wire from 12-18 gauge with connectors and wire cutters. I already had to rewire my bumper lights after a small branch grabbed the wire under the bumper

I have a dead-blow hammer that my dad gave to me. He said, "when you need it, you'll know what it's for". I don't know what it's for. Who can give me an idea of it's application?

A dead-blow hammer can provide a huge amount of force, concentrated in a small space with relatively little effort and often while protecting the surface being impacted.

I find i use a dead blow more working with woods…. Give gives a heavy but steady blow, rather than a “sharp” strike of a regular hammer, if that makes sense… i use it a lot when adjusting and calibrating machines…

I’ve found the need for an 18mm socket several times on my Bronco and it’s often not included in the standard socket set. Most recently for the gas tank skid plate bolts

So this has most of the items in our list (minus vise grips and torque wrench). I wrap a small dead blow hammer in the middle of it. This was the smallest tool roll I had with full pockets. Got it off Amazon a couple years ago. Just to give you an idea of how compact you can carry these tools.

Great thread! My wife got me the Bronco Nation tool roll for Christmas and I've been pondering this. I always keep a full set of cheap tools in those fold Flat tool boxes in all my vehicles so I'm not sure what I'll put in this but I did want it. I haven't read through all the responses but both plastic and metal zip ties can McGyver many things.

Unless you buy a very large and expensive set you won't likely find everything in this list in one package. Hopefully you can use this to find an affordable quality set to start from and add to it. I get my single one off tools from Menards.
