How big of a tire can I put on my outer banks without a lift on the stock wheels?

Welcome!!

275/70r18 is the largest you’ll be able to comfortably go.

275/70r18 can be a rare size... so if you can't find one, 265/70r18 and and 275/65r18 also work. All three are within 1" of each other.

I scored some OB wheels and I am going with 275/70/18 tires , toyo's , Bridgestones KO's , Kenda Klever . not sure yet of which ones exactly will decide that when I get my Big Bend next month ( fingers and toes crossed )

apologize for my ignorance on tires... I am waiting on my OBX. The off roading I do If any will be very light. I want something that will fit the stock 18" rims but a bit beefier look than stock ones without sacrificing too much highway driving comfort and noise.. will the 275 ones be better or the 265 once? thank you again

Okay... so tire sizes 101:

XXX/YYrZZ
  • XXX = Tire width in millimeters
  • YY = Tire sidewall ratio relative to the width of the tire. Said another way... percentage of the tire width that makes up the sidewall. For example, if your tire width is 275mm and your sidewall ratio is 70... then your sidewalls are 275mm * 70% = 192.5mm
  • ZZ = Diameter of the wheel in inches.
The stock Outer Banks tires are (255/70r18). Using that you can figure out the diameter of the tire: (2 * 255mm * 70%) + 18" = 32.06 inches

You can fit up to a 290mm wide, ~33 inch tire on stock Outer Banks suspension without any major modifications. The problem in your case is the stock Outer Banks wheels are 18 inches in diameter and 7.5 inches wide. You aren't going to find a 290mm wide tire that will fit on those wheels. The best you can do is probably going to be ~275mm wide. A 275/70r18 tire will give you look that is somewhere in-between a stock Black Diamond and a stock Badlands. So if you want a beefier look that what the stock Badlands has, your only real option is to go with different wheels and/or a lift.

Here is a reference of all of the stock wheel/tire sizes in case you need it.

Or..... you can allow them to go here: https://tiresize.com/converter/ and not have to do all that crazy math. ;)

I get that many people like the 18" wheels (I personally do not... I come from a time when we wrapped a 35" around a 15" wheel (Outlaw II's baby!!)). But hell, I'd stick with the 17" wheels just because tires are that much cheaper between the 2 and I prefer the smaller wheel... more meat showing.

And in response to @AJ Judi , BFG All-Terrains would work for you and give the capability you seem to be looking for. Or Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T's. Whatever you do.... (read my signature).... stay away from Nitto!!

Nitto tires SUCK! You've been warned.
