I have found (my experience) that credit cards are safe, and IF something goes wrong, whether caused by me or someone else, they are super easy to deactivate and replace…. And being able to dispute charges and letting them (cc company) go after the bad guys gives me tremendous piece of mind…. I’m very reluctant to write a check anymore, and I keep my blank checks around mostly so I can find my routing and account number with relying on my CRS-riddled grey matter. Of course credit cards are an option ONLY if I commit to paying the balance in full each month.

My banker has always encouraged me to use my debit card ONLY for ATM cash withdrawals, and to not use it for sales transactions due to the “hold” most businesses will put on them, which can be very slow to be released… You might have the money in your account, but the “hold” can really wreak havoc with your daily life…. I get it, and understand why they do it, but I don‘t use the debit card except in a cash machine…

Yes you should only use your debit card for ATM cash withdrawals and ONLY at bank ATM’s. And to protect yourself further in the case your debit card is skimmed, do not link any of your other accounts to checking for overdraft protection. That way if your checking account is emptied, it stops there. And lastly, I wouldn’t leave a lot of extra money in your checking account.

With all the traveling I've been doing, I've learned that Loves puts a $175 hold when you fill up. I think this just started in November.
Discover is on it whenever I've tried to order something on a fraudulent site. It's happened twice in recent years. Phone call, text and email right then and there.

Good morning all! I'm not up too early, I just went to bed too late.
I had applied for a job with an insurance agency in December for the same type of position I've held for 24 years. I had been hired by them about 4 years ago, then backed out because my employer gave me a raise and a bonus to stay. So I wanted to read their temperature and get my foot in the door. Their recruiter called me the next day. They have a job opening in April that I would prefer. The HR lady called yesterday. They would like for me to start in March, part-time to go through training -allow-allowing me time off to go to Moab in April. Easing back into the job thing sounds good. But another agency has an opening and their office is much closer to home. So, I need to do some applying today and see if I can get any interest. Would love to have options.
I'm 6+ months of not working. It's been fun.
I sent a pic of my rear bumper to Jeff's old employer, Mild to Wild to give him a heads up that I might stop by to get guidance on getting the license plate better secured back on the bumper until I get a new one. He's going to check with his suppliers to see if he can find me a scratch & dent one. That would work! I will scratch & dent it anyway.
Have a good all! Be kind. Hug the ones you love!

You'll get lots of advice. Here's mine:
Don't waste a moment filing for unemployment. It will start from when you file, not from when you stopped working. So: no down time, there!
Organize and document what your income will be, see if you file for EBT. In Boston, qualification for EBT is the magic gateway to all sorts of things: discount transit fares, reduced YMCA membership, museum passes, university tuition, etc. Take note of what income is to be reported. For example, Social Security or VA payments may not be included, so be careful with all that. If layabouts and illegal immigrants can get it, so should a long-time American taxpayer!
Do circulate your resume. Something interesting you hadn't know about or would otherwise have considered may show up. AI is big in the resume field, not only as a work skill, but lots of resumes are prepared and assessed by AI. The rules have changed.
Stay physically active. DO something. The best fitness regimen is the one you will keep doing.
Beware the dangers of passivity and inactivity. People (men especially) who go from high-involvement careers to zero activity die young. Speaking of which,
Are all your finances, accounts, log-ons, insurance policies gathered in a single paper and digital file?
Most people should not file for Social Security until they're 70.
But you MUST file for Medicare at age 65, even if you don't collect SS.

Godspeed, and enjoy your new life!
"Man's adversity is God's opportunity."

I appreciate the advice.
I've decided to not apply for unemployment since it looks like I'll be trying the substitute teaching gig. Everything that I make through that would take away from my unemployment amount. It's just not worth it.

As far as a full time job, it's just not going to happen. My wife and I have several trips already planned and paid for and no way I'd get that much vacation from a new employer.

I'm 62 and was planning on retiring when I was 65. Didn't quite make it. I already applied for SS so I figure it will be at least a month before I see anything from that.

Although we had plans to pay off several loans prior to retiring but we've had to rethink our strategy but we'll get there.
All in all, my wife and I are in good shape for the future. We've just had a pivot a bit, but will still be fine.

Dean,
It’s always a bit jarring to suddenly “quit working”… When we came home from the island I decided I was not going back into education full-time, and spent a year at Lowes (a great time working for peanuts), a year as a middle school teacher’s aide, and a year as full-time caregiver for my (then) youngest granddaughter (definitely the best job ever)…. At 62 I decided to start drawing my SS (Sonya was still working), and I have done just odd jobs here and there since then… having “eased” into not working made it a much easier break, and now that Sonya and I have been fully retired for there years, we couldn’t be more pleased with the flexibility of coming and going that life now provides…

Good Luck to you and Susie (sp) as you navigate this new normal…

Thanks Al. Yeah, trying to find a few part time jobs to keep me busy. Although I've been doing the pickleball thing every morning, I have a feeling my body is not going to like that schedule eventually.😆

Getting back to financial fraud and mishaps...
The bank refunded my $10,000 very promptly. But they do want me to file a police report ASAP.

An idea to help in case of further mishap:
Take everything out of your wallet, lay it out on copier glass, and take a few images. Then turn everything upside down and do the backs. This is not only for your credit cards, but everything else you have: driver's and other licenses (e.g. firearms), store affinity & reward cards, library cards, organization memberships...everything.
That way, if you lose your wallet, you have all the numbers and contact info in one place. It will simplify putting your organizational life back together if your wallet gets lost, stolen, or badly damaged.

Waiting to 70 is usually best for most people. Do the arithmetic. It also calls for the hard-boiled assessment of your own mortality, what you think your health is good for.
Incidentally, I've found I'm much more comfortable talking about my death and estate matters than my children are. But I force the conversation.

after retiring, I worked part-time driving taxi for a year until the house was paid off. Which prompts an interesting observation/story. We know our financial decisions are important--but so are the decisions we don't make. I retired in 2012, new the taxi industry, and saw how taxi vehicle licenses ("medallions") were rising in price, mid $600,000 range, and going up $20K-$30K a year. New York medallions were already over one million! I figured I could cash out home equity, buy two cabs + medallions, and lease them, covering vacant shifts myself for extra $$. But I never got around to that.

Well, guess what happened in 2012-2014: Uber and the ride-share industry. It busted the taxi industry! Cabbies with high mortgages and notes were literally killing themselves. You just don't see a line of cabs are restaurants and hotels anymore. Step out in the street and look for a cab to hail--none! Medallions now cost about $30,000/private sale.

So not buying a cab and medallion was one of the best decisions I never made!

At 62 my wife was still working full-time and I knew I had a reasonable pension coming at 65 so I started my SS at 62… I did the math and figured the crossover point for me would be at 84 years old (62 vs 70 SS start)… jumped and didn’t look back… we had the advantage of a paid off mortgage and no loans, and my wife had medical for us until Medicare kicked in, so fir us it was a no brainer!

Everyone has to look at their own situation and make their own choice… for us the question came down to “how much is enough?” and then the choices were easy…

All the signs say "VEHICLE DAMAGE POSSIBLE". Last line under the trail description.
Now, I do consider a trail ride a party. But this is one of those parties with no trail ride.

Good morning! It is Thirsty Thursday! I may drink to that today. I'm going to bite the bullet and buy bumper(s) today. All the sudden my OCD is kicking in, the back must match the front. They haven't, so what is my problem now? And, I may need a winch too.
I may need to learn how to take the flares off and put them back on. As well as the ends of the front bumper.
Yes, I want to do these trails again! There is another lady in the club that is in her mid 70's, getting skid plates on her jeep to do these trails. I want to do them with her.
When this bug bites, it bites hard!
Hope you all have a great day! Hug the ones you love!

Removing and reinstalling the flares is a breeze. Be forewarned though that it’s a bit alarming when you first pull them off; they make a dreadful popping noise that makes you think you damaged something. You didn’t, but it sounds like something broke when you first do it. Popping them back on goes much easier, and after a while, you don’t even notice the scary sounds they make when being removed or reinstalled. Trust me. 😉
