I love looking at the "story behind the song" . In this case Israel Kamakawiwoʻole (IZ) recorded his iconic "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in a spontaneous, one-take session at a Honolulu studio at 3 AM in 1988, prompted by a late-night creative urge. The recording was a spur-of-the-moment demo for himself and the engineer, Milan Bertosa, and was only added to his 1993 album Facing Future five years later, eventually becoming the world's most requested version of the song.

Then, with our dearly departed in mind, I recommend this article on "Over the Rainbow" and its origins, which are quite profound.

https://www.steynonline.com/6545/over-the-rainbow

The problem with getting the lyrics right for that first one-octave leap on the opening two notes, "Some...where..." Judy Garland could definitely handle the notes, but she's portraying a little girl--little-girl songs don't have big vocal jumps like that.

An interesting tidbit: They where having trouble with the notes for:

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me...

The solution was the lyricist's dog whistle, which he created to summon is dog inside, two notes repeated up and down. Hum those familiar lines in your mind, and imagine whistling them, see what I mean?

And yes, Mark Steyn does mention Israel Kamakawiwoʻole Ironic--because the song's writers were Jewish!

Good morning! Happy Saturday! Missing the morning toons and our little buddy who'd throw them on here for us.
And I will be missing my Bronco buddy when I start loading up later today.
I got to get out the door in about an hour to fill up the gas tank and then stop for coffee with a friend and then packing begins. Yee-Haw!
Have a good day. Prayers and hugs to all!

Oh my God! Laura and I started traveling early Wednesday and I haven’t been on here. We are in Colorado Springs getting ready to the jaunt to ouray and I’m just finding out now about Steve. Although I never met him, I felt like he was a friend. I’m so very sad right now. May he rest in peace and may God comfort his family and all who were honored to have known him. 💔

This is the coffee that I have been drinking for the past few months. I love it! I went to BJ's Club to get more and when I checked out, it listed as $13 dollars. It is usually over $40 for 75 K Cups. I asked the employee in the checkout area, and she said that if that's what it says, then that's the price. She asked me if I wanted to get more! I don't do that stuff. I got home and told my wife. She checked on the BJ's website and saw that it was on clearance and she ran out to the BJ's in our city and bought 10 boxes!😂

Good Saturday Evening, Kids!
Quiet here as some of the regulars are traveling for a convo in the Nation‘s Navel (Colorado). Was a little eerie this morning not having Saturday morning toons from @Sven but I’m comforted knowing he doesn’t hurt anymore…

We are enjoying some beautiful weather here in Northern Utah, but I must admit I’m wanting to get home. We’ve had an amazing time, but being in my bed and among my stuff is my happy place… Tuesday we’ll pull a 12 hour day to get home and all will be well…

I can’t remember where I posted it but remembrances for Steve can be made to The Veteran’s Meat Locker or the American Cancer Society…

Have a great weekend, all!

Good SundayMorning! It was to be a "we ride at dawn" morning. But I can't check into the hotel until 4pm (I have 3 cats with me, so walking around and seeing Ouray while they sit in the Bronco may not work) and it is only a 5 hour drive. Also, had an invasion of ants this morning and no bug spray.

I'm on cup #2. Thank God for the one cup k cup coffee maker.bi can have my same brew on the road.
I have to comment on something @Wolf wrote about running towards danger while the majority are running away from danger. First by saying thanks to all who do. And there's several professionals trained to do just that.
That made me think of what I run towards as a business owner that others run from.
I run towards Taxes, regulation, leverage debit, employee problems, insurance and things I didn't even know.
And when someone talks about what a bad day they had because they had a flat tire and had to by 4, I think, my average day would kill you.

Keeping perspective on this Labor Day weekend.

Have a great looooong weekend

THREE cats?! You are incredible. I thought it was a challenge having ONE in my Bronco on my way to Moab! 🐈

Have fun in Colorado!

Have fun in Colorado!

One got out of his harness in the 1st 1/2 mile. He kept on trying to get up under the dash. He finally found a place to hide. I didn't know where that was until I stopped to pee just before Silverton. In line at pit toilets at Molasis trail and they said no TP. So I got kleenex from the backseat. Opened the door and he almost fell out. He was between the back seat and the door. He's hiding behind the bed now. The other 2 are in the pet carrier still. They feel safe there.
