Spent the weekend on a gifted trip (birthday getaway) from my wife exploring the Nevade backroads behind Death Valley NP, Death Valley itself, and a bunch of ghost towns. The weather was schizophrenic at best. It was 96deg at Stovepipe Wells the first day, beautiful and in the 80's behind the park above 6k' in Nevada shifting to a gusty 50mph windy afternoon, followed by an extreme temperature drop below freezing the last night with some sleet/snow. The place really is so vast and open, it makes you feel small.
We slept pretty comfort though, as we used the Hard Luck Castle as a jump-off point for our stay. Definitely worth a google, it was built by basically one guy over ten years to outlast the apocalypse. haha There is a ton of off-roading in the area, but what we did was fairly novice. My daughter is not too keen on steep grades and angles yet.
We needed some extra room for gear so I bought a harbor freight hitch carrier. It worked pretty well but I definitely noticed it and it pushed on the rear suspension a bit.
