I want to plan a trip to Moab next year. I would like to get feedback regarding the best time. I don't want to be there in the summer, I know...it's a dry heat. Been to AZ in the 113 dry heat...IT'S STILL HOT!! My other other concern in the winter months is the rain/snow and mud, especially if it's the old cleachy clay. I know the answer has a depends clause in it, and not the adult diaper version.

Can folks that have been there and on the trails say from January to March tell me their experiences/ pros and cons.

Thanks,
Dave

In that date range there is a higher chance of some areas being closed due to flooding or mud. For example this is currently posted on recreation.gov:

Early May was really nice last year, a bit chilly in the mornings but excellent topless weather after lunch.

End of April, right after Easter Jeep Safari ends. Go during the week, because the Toyota Landcruiser event is the following weekend. Typically light jacket weather in the morning and t shirt weather in the afternoon.

I know this isn't what you asked for, but I was down there twice last year early November and mid-December, and it was great. defiantly sweatshirt weather but no mud and the room rates had come down for the off season, so it was reasonable. Plus the trails weren't crowded.

This is good info. I should have asked the question in the cooler/cold weather. I'm assuming less folks? Thanks

I appreciate this thread.

We went in June. Hit 113°F on the hottest day. Yeah, it's a dry heat but so is my oven. That was really hot. Still not as bad as WI in August with 95°F and high humidity. Can't wait to go back some day in cooler weather.

I got one of them a few years back, then the trip got canceled. But thanks for the reminder to get it out of the bookcase. I also use the trail guide from Red Rock 4x4 club. I'm an associate member. Some of theirs have gps files you can down load to GAIA, Garmin, and GE.

Thanks

Wev enjoyed our trip last month. Afternoons in upper 40s/lower 50s, cool nights & cold frosty sunrises. Our neighbors have school age kids and like Thanksgiving breaks in Moab. We're told that mosquitos can be ferocious along the Colorado River in a wet early spring.

Cheers

Nope...never would have guessed mosquitos in the desert.
