Life is a Highway

Oct 22, 2024

Last Wednesday I caught a flight to Chicago and met up with @Deano Bronc for a camping trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. After a short night of sleep we were up and on the road from Indiana to Michigan where we met up with @SlashRacer and his son Wyatt. Let the good times roll!
Our first stop on the way north was at the Silver Lakes Dunes. It was clear and sunny and there were almost no other vehicles out that morning. It was a good thing for one gentleman that we stopped by, because he may have been stuck for a very long time. As soon as we got out on the dunes, there he was waving hello to us.

Technical question… when in soft dunes (assuming from the pic of the stuck truck) what should we air down to for the best traction? I’ve never done serious dunes yet, but boy does that look fun…

Yeah - We did lots of sand wheeling on east coast beaches - Tons 'o FUN!! Gotta air down as low as you can in deep sand though.

I wondered 'bout that Chevy too. Don't see any evidence of digging-out nor airing down. Says he was stuck there a while - Should see tons of sand removed from the wheels & center - but don't see any sand moved..

I think I did go down to about 16 because we weren't going to be there very long and we were kinda in a hurry. Normally I air down to around 10psi. I know it sounds low but you won't have any issues unless maybe you're driving like an asshat.

I also use Baja mode instead of Sand mode. Baja puts on the front camera which makes it nice for seeing what's in front of you has you crest the hills.

IMG_9526.jpegIMG_9529.jpegThe crystal clear water pic is Kitch-Iti-Kipi. The water is 45’ deep but looks like it right below the raft we went out on.

We stayed at the Two Hearted River campground.

We had SlashRacer’s world famous French toast and bacon for breakfast on Friday morning. Ribeyes steaks cooked in bacon grease, smothered in onions and mushrooms on Friday evening. Saturday morning we had eggs and sausage links. Saturday evening we had Philly cheesesteak sandwiches and we invited the neighbors to join us for dinner.

I was at Kitch-iti-kipi earlier this summer, in July. We have a cabin in the UP. How about the size of those fish?

Late to the party, but man, having grown up in Michigan and spent most of my youth going to all those spots this dials up the nostalgia🥹. Thanks for sharing all the great U.P. beauty!
