A Couple of Days in Sedona

I spent a couple of days in Cottonwood, AZ this week. I had a chance to do Schnebly Hill, Soldier Pass, and Broken Arrow. I thought I would post a couple of pictures and comments

It was August and it was warm. But my Bronco has great A/C. And by going mid-August, you don't have traffic jams in Sedona, you can find parking anywhere, the restaurants are not crowded, and you see either no one, or only Pink Jeeps on the trails. Personally, I thought it was a great trade off. I HATE Sedona crowds...

In any case, the Sedona red rocks are closer than the Moab red rocks. Sure Moab has more trails, and a couple of big rivers. But I think Sedona has a lot to give...

I went down Schnebly Hill. There are a few great views when you start down, but mostly, it is just really rocky. For me, I don't think I would do that one again. Not enough juice for the squeeze...

Soldier Pass can be tough to get a pass for, since they give out only 12 per day. But August is the slowest month, and getting a pass was easy.
The trail was not hard (a 3 maybe?) but the Devil's bathtub and the 7 Sacred Pools are worth going to see.

Finally, Broken Arrow. onX called it a 5, but only the Devil's Staircase is probably a 5. Trails Offroad said that mandatory only was a 3. (Adding the Optionals makes it a 6) But the only way to avoid the Staircase, is by turning back early. Either way, there are lots of obstacles on the 3 or 4 variety though. The views all along, and especially at Chicken Point make this trail worth the trouble. The only other rigs out there were the 4 Pink Jeeps I saw, and they were quite pleasant.

Curious if you did both parts of the Schnebly Hill trail. I ran it up from Sedona to I17. Curious how the top half is.

I started from I-17, near Munds Park and went south to Sedona. Is there another part?

The top part, of what I did, is smoother, and there are some offshoot trails that are more challenging, if you are interested. (One is called the Rock Garden Trail.) I went out to the "Overlook" from up there. You could see out, but it was not much of an overlook:

HA! I did not know that. And I didn't see that in onX or TrailsOffroad. I need to research better...

I've done Sedona and broken arrow lots of times in the past with my Jeep. It's an awesome trail. As you eluded to, it's a mini Moab. The area is fun. Lots more restrictions now.
I can imagine the summer keeps the tourist traffic down. They think it's hot.
Our 4x4 club made it an annual run and we camped off schnebly hill road.
Thanks for sharing. It's one of Arizonas best trails.

Ridden through Sedona a couple of times. The first time Tracy and I were coming back from Caliafornia on the hwy and was 32 F or colder. Freezing. I wanted to take the back road to Sedona. It was dark and there was snow on the sides of the road. Tracy wasn't keen on that. Probably a good idea. We took the hwy. We ended up at the Marriot frozen. The next morning it was so cold we stopped at a McDonalds to warm up and we were only on the road perhaps a half hour or so. Very cold. Great memories. The next time we saw more of Sedona....ha.. Not much more. We hammer it down when traveling back from somewhere. For me it has always been about the riding and the scenery is bonus. Slowing down a bit wouldn't hurt. It would be nice to see some off road trials there.
