The Science of Sound Pt.1: Iconic Design –– Bronco’s B&O Sound System

Yesterday, we introduced our two-part video series on the 2021 Bronco’s B&O sound system. We want you to be well-equipped in understanding the system and what’s good about it, as well as hear from some of the engineers about what went into building it.

In this first video, professional car reviewer, audio expert, and Bronco owner Micah Muzio and HARMAN International senior mechanical integration engineer Kyle Gutowski cover the design of the B&O sound system, from speakers designed to take on the elements to the placement of them.

Kyle worked on the B&O sound system for the Bronco with the Ford team. He’s been involved in the Bronco sound system upgrade from the early talks in 2017 up through the vehicle’s development. The Bronco was a special project for HARMAN, with a B&O system made fresh for it, starting with vehicle CAD files. This is one of the most beneficial points to owners: a system custom tailored and tuned to the Bronco.

Kyle explains that HARMAN asked Ford the questions necessary to outfit the Bronco with robustly tested speakers that can handle water and debris, yet placed in spots best protected from them. He walks Micah through placement and covers their importance.

Next, the men head to the rear of the vehicle to show off the system’s amplifier, attached to the subwoofer behind a panel in the cargo area. The subwoofer was one of the biggest challenges for Kyle –– there’s a lot in that location fighting for space, something the sub needs much of to perform best. The modularity of the Bronco and customer customization also posed problems for the sound system, but with back-and-forth between the teams, they were able to get the setup just right for such a unique vehicle.

Watch the full video to hear and see Micah and Kyle cover differences between the six-speaker base sound system and the B&O sound system (more speakers and power), the advantages in sound quality with this system, and other details. Tune in next week to see part 2!

Are you getting the B&O Sound System? What questions do you have? And if you have it, what do you think? Talk about it in the forums.
