To drone or not to drone?

Wherever you go, there you are!

I have been considering getting a drone for a while now but keep putting it off as I don't think I'd use it that much.. I am not a YouTuber or anything like that so getting footage for videos would not be my primary goal.

I would like to find one that has collision avoidance because I am a drone nOOB and don't feel like it getting stuck up in tree on my 1st flight. LOL. There are only a few that do that, and they are kinda pricey..

My main use of a drone would be to scout ahead on a trail to check conditions / terrain or, more importantly to me, to look for sweet dispersed camping sites that I might otherwise miss..

**Most people use a DJI, like a Mini 4 Pro, but they are hard to find as I guess the US has an issue with them being made in China and is blocking their imports. DJI has also taken all the drones down from their US website and no longer sells them here in the US.. You can import them from places like Korea, but you'd probably be hit with a few hundred dollar in tariff fees..

**please do not turn this thread into a political / tariff food fight..

Any of you peeps have, and use, a drone?

Thoughts, suggestion and opinions welcome..

So my Skyrover shipped but it's not shipping from inside the US. It shipped FedEx International Priority from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.. Guess I'll see if there are any customs or tariff issues. Skyrover told me there would not be so if there is, I'll take it up with Amazon..

Also, the 20% off codes I previously mentioned no longer work. The codes must have been for a limited time or for a limited number of units sold. No clue, but they no longer work. Glad I ordered when I did..

I'll update after / if it arrives. I have a trip planned for early next month where I'll test it out. It might not make it back in one piece, or even at all, but I'll update after that trip as well..

More info has came out and it's now all but guaranteed that it's either made by DJI under a different name and origin / shipping country to avoid the US issues, or the Mini 4 Pro was officially licensed out by DJI to Skyrover.. Oddly enough, the Skyrover can only be purchased in the US and from Amazon.. Weird..

Meh, I went ahead and ordered the SkyRover X1 from Amazon. It's basically a DJI Mini 4 Pro clone. I've read speculation where many are saying it is a DJI, just slightly modified, but who knows.

Best I can tell, there are NO import fees or tariffs on this drone as the drones themselves are already located in the US for shipping. It looks like they are made in Malaysia (maybe?).

It has all the same features that the Mini 4 Pro has like accident avoidance etc. Like I said above, I was going to get a cheap one to learn on but I only ended up paying $400 for this one.

There is a 20% off code that I found on a YouTube video review of it that you can use (and the codes work on Amazon) and I had a Amazon Gift card to use..

I do not know how long these codes are valid for. I assume for a limited amount of time or maybe limited to the # of units sold but it worked for me this morning..

The discount codes listed below NO LONGER WORK as of 7-29-25. They must have been for a limited time or for limited number of units sold. Glad I got my order in when I did.

Use code: CSKTNE9U for 20% off the Skyrover X1 Fly More kit ( Amazon X1 Fly More Kit )
Use code: WZ3CK9O9 for 20% off the Skyrover X1 Base kit ( Amazon X1 Base Kit )

Don't check the box for 10% off code shown on the product page, add the code above at checkout.. (they don't stack, I tired!)

I ordered the base model and figure if one battery is not enough I can buy another later. I can't imagine I'd need more than one battery though... I am not a YouTuber and my use will be to scout trails ahead and to look for dispersed camp sites. I might use it for a few cool aerial shots here and there but that's about it..

The only bummers that I can tell is that there is no option for a controller with a screen so you have to use your phone in the controller and there is no program like DJI after care for lost drone replacement.

I contacted them on Amazon, and they surprising answered back quickly. After several back and forth questions and answers on Amazon messages, I decided to order it.

They say they are working on many different options and might have a controller with a screen in the near future. If they do, and my drone is still alive, then I would be able to purchase it separately. They also said they will have extra batteries and accessories coming soon. They also said they are looking into an after care program like DJI.

I do not know if they are going to stick around long term, what long term support will look like, or if they will ever release the accessories and screen controller that I asked about but they were honest with me in my communications and they responded quickly..

New company, no accessories at the moment, no official website, and their customer support is only through Amazon messaging. For those reasons, I'd suggest using some caution when considering it but hey, I am a wild child and decided to go for it.. LOL

Since it does not have a drone replacement care option, I'll have to be careful when flying it but I feel a little better knowing that it has accident avoidance. For $400 after all the discounts and gift card, I figured it was worth it to roll the dice on it.

I have a trip planned for the beginning of next month so I guess I'll see how it, and I, do.. I assume the chances are medium to high that I'll report back and say I crashed it, or lost it... πŸ˜‚
It's Cyber Orange!!!!🀯 Too bad $900 puts it waaaaay down on the priority list. 20% off has expired too.

I had been eyeballing the Mini 4k for over a year now but I see that the amazon description does not show proximity (following a target such as the Bronco) nor obstacle avoidance. I will need to get clarification from DJI regarding whether the initial specs I saw including proximity was incorrect or if amazon just doesn't have a thorough description. The price point for the Pro, for me, makes it a silly toy that I won't get my

The Mini 4 Pro, and the Skyrover, will both follow a vehicle and both have obstacle avoidance. I am headed out the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th next month and will test them all out on the Skyrover..

The Mini 4K does not do either of those..
s worth from vs a cool toy I won't regret.

I am going to order some DJI Mini 4 Pro propellers for the one I bought and I think I am going to sign up for the Asurion Protect Plan. The Asurion Toy Plan says it does not cover 'drops and spills" and a search said it did not cover crashed drones. Their Complete Protect Plan does cover crashed drones.

I filtered the reviews down to search for Drone on their complete plan and everyone says crashes were covered and they received a full refund for the price of their drone. The bummer is it's $17 a month (1st month is half off) and it does not cover lost or stolen.

At least that way if I crash it, it'll get replaced or refunded so I can buy another. If I lose it up in a tree then I guess I'll chuck rocks and / or tree branches at it until it falls out and crashes to the ground.. LOL

I guess their complete plan also covers any past and future purchases as well..

Amazon Asurion Complete Plan

I figure I'll keep the plan for a little bit until I actually know how to fly the thing properly then maybe cancel the plan..
If you get it to crash to the ground using rocks and branches they'll replace it. Now you have an excuse to get out there and use the heck out if it. If you get really good in a few months you won't have to keep paying a monthly insurance charge.

I'm probably not the best drone pilot but my buddy and I tried to get it to follow our sxs and if we went too fast, it lost it. So I haven't had luck getting it to follow a vehicle. Unless manually flying it.
It follows me just fine on auto.

Did you have the Mini 4 Pro? I watched a lot of videos and it looks like it does pretty good following a car. While that is not my intended use of the drone, I will test it out next week on my trip..

The best that I can tell, and I am still trying to figure it all out, is that there are 2 different tracking modes for cars. One where it will follow behind the car at a slight altitude and another where it follows higher-up in the sky..

The mode where it follows higher up, could be problematic in heavily wooded areas or where the downward view of the drone that's used to lock onto the car is obstructed.. The mode where it follows behind, should work fine even on semi-tight trails and any obstacles should be able to be avoided via the obstacle avoidance.

Both of those modes are automated and require little to no user input as far as controlling the drone goes.. Well, that's what I've read and watched so far on the feature at least..

I assume since the Skyrover X1 is just a rebranded DJI Mini 4 Pro that it should function, and behave, exactly the same. I'll test it next week and report back.

yeah, i have the mini 4 pro. It will follow until the vehicle speed picks up. then it looses it. And out in the desert, we don't have trees and such blocking. Again, I'm not a experienced drone pilot, i just have one.
Most of the time when i fly i manually control it. Here is a nugget, they do not recommend flying them when its hot. Might be around 90 (I know that ain't hot)

Ah, cool.. Yeah, I don't anticipate having it follow me at faster speeds. I am a slow poke on trails as I like to enjoy the scenery and whatnot..

If it works --> cool, if not then it will not be a big deal to me as that's not a feature I'd use regularly anyways.. I'll test the Skyrover X1 out next week on my trip and see how it does..

You will be surprised how easy these drones are to fly the biggest thing is spacial awareness you got to think about it in 3D. That said they are easy to crash the wife was practicing with ours and was getting pretty good at flying trough obstacles like over a fence but below a tree branch. Until she was flying over the house and got near a tree and forgot you pull back on the stick to go up and she hit the tree. We have the Mini 4 not the pro. But I knocked it out of the tree and fired it back up works like a champ. They are pretty durable.

Just remember if you get in trouble let go of both sticks. It’s default is to hover.

Skyrover sent me the user manual for the X1.

I uploaded it to my Google Drive if anyone wants to check it out.

I signed up for the Amazon Asurion Complete Protect plan. It's $17 a month but it also covers past and future purchases. When I look though my past purchase history, it says a lot of the stuff I bought is now covered.

Not sure if I will keep that plan long term (probably not) but it'll be nice to have while I learn how to fly the thing.. It does not cover lost so like I said before, if it gets stuck in a tree I guess I'll be tossing rocks, branches and sticks at it in the hopes of knocking it free so it can crash land on the ground, thus trigger the plan.. πŸ˜‚

I see it has automated waypoints so I'll use that a lot, I assume.. I can pre-program it to fly to certain areas / waypoints and then return home. No manual control even needed.

I can program it to follow a trail out then turn around and come right back to me. This will be great for scouting ahead and I won't really need to do anything except to watch the live video feed that will show the trail conditions.

Same can be done for scouting potential dispersed camp sites. See something on the map but not sure? Automate it to fly there, circle the area, then return home..

Well, that's my hope at least.. As a drone n00b, I guess I'll find out if any of this even works.. LOL

This is a killer video tutorial for n00bs like me.. It's for the DJI Mini 4 Pro and I assume it will be the same for the Skyrover X1 that I ordered. I downloaded it to my phone for reference later when out in the middle of nowhere with no service.

It's about an hour and a half in length.. But he covers absolutely everything..
