Car fridge that fits length wise in the 2dr rear cargo area with rear seats up

In the past, I have generally only use a Yeti cooler for my camping trips. Having a 2dr means limited cargo space so a small'ish Yeti cooler easily fit and carried enough to get by.

A company recently sent me a free car fridge for review (why me? No clue - but they did).. It worked great but it was a bit to large for my little 2dr, especially when tossing all my camping gear in my topless 2dr Bronco.

Here is a shot of the one I received and how much of the rear cargo space it occupied. Once I also put my battery power bank back there, the entire rear cargo area was pretty much taken up.

Using the car fridge -v- the cooler was awesome so I began my hunt for something that would fit length wise, thus freeing up additional space in the cargo area.

I came across the Dometic CFX3 25 Liter fridge. The only bummer is the one above is a dual zone and the Dometic is a single zone. Fine by me, I don't need Ice Cream anyways, I guess...

Checking measurements for the 2dr cargo area and the Dometic fridge still said it was a no go. However they also list the size without the handles so I figured I'd give it a shot as it was close. The fridge is pretty lightweight and I don't really plan on taking it out of the Bronco when out camping so the only real need I have for handles would be to carry it to the Bronco at the start of my trip and out of the Bronco after the trip.

Since it's fairly small and lightweight, it's easy to carry short distances without the handles. If you wanted you could always bring the handles and take them off / put them on as needed as it's 4ea 5mm screws holding the handles onto the fridge.

It takes no force to close the tailgate and the fridge has about a millimeter or so of space between the front of it and the tailgate when closed. I assume if you have a tailgate table then this is not going to work.

Here are a few shots of it in the cargo area with the handles off.

The only other drawback is that the lid does not open fully due to the angle of the rear pass seat. It opens enough to get items out easily but it won't open fully. However, if I need to open it fully, all I need to do is release tension of the tie down strap and slide the fridge forward about 1".

I got it on sale for 20% off of the price, so while it was still kind of pricy, it was not as bad as it could have been.

The fridge in the 1st photo took up about 26.5"×17.3"×18" (8155 cubic inches) of space. The Dometic CFX3 25L takes up about 22.4"x13.2"x16.5" (4878 cubic inches). Taking the handles off the Dometic makes the size 19.8"x13.2"x16.5" (4312 cubic inches). While that might not sound like a lot, every inch (and cubic inch) counts in the 2dr. Even more so since I roll topless.

Anyways, thought I'd share for anyone who has been looking for a similar option. Going this route, has freed up some valuable space in cargo area in the 2dr.

Here are a few shots with the handles on and in a different orientation. In this configuration I have room for my Maxtrax Mini Traction Boards behind the fridge, the battery power bank (behind the backpack) and a backpack carrying first aid, small axe/saw combo, a shovel and an emergency tire repair kit. I didn't have room or space for the traction boards with the previous fridge so I left them sitting on the rear seats.

I still have some room between the front of the fridge and my Power Tank where I can fit my folding camp table, or my recovery and power tank gear, or my larger backpack that holds all my clothes. The lid will now fully open.

Not sure what configuration I'll use but it's nice to have options.

My car fridge setup has been working fine but I am always looking to improve it and make my life easier.. I am also wanting to stay out on longer camping and off-road trips.

I dispersed camp most times so no
electricity like a traditional campsite would offer..

While I do have a camper, I keep my car fridge and battery pack inside the Bronco. This gives me cold drinks, fresh sandwiches, etc when out on the trails and allows for easy access when at the campsite. My camper is small so I don't really have the room to keep a car fridge inside it plus since it's not inside the camper, I don't need to worry about the compressor making noise while trying to sleep..

My current setup is a 25L car fridge (single zone) and a 40Ah battery pack. The battery pack charges from the Bronco at about 100Wh when the Bronco is running.. It works but I am constantly stressing on battery power if I want to take a non trail day and just chill at camp. I do have solar and a generator to top it off but the stress and worry is still always there. Solar is slow but the generator would recharge it fairly fast.. I'd rather not use the generator as the fuel I carry is emergency fuel for the Bronco or to recharge the campers 200Ah of battery if needed..

I think I can make it better so here is the next route I am going to attempt.

  1. Iceco APL35. This is a 35L fridge that is dual zone. I doubt I'd use a section of it as a freezer very often but it will be nice to have the option for longer trips where I might need to keep meat frozen.
  2. Anker Solix C1000 Gen 2 battery pack that has 85Ah (1024Wh) of battery capacity. The Dometic I have been using is 40Ah (512Wh) so the new Anker will be double what I currently have.
  3. Anker Solix Alternator Battery Charger. Will charge the battery at 600Wh while the Bronco is running. If the above mentioned Anker is completely dead, this will recharge it fully to 100% in about 1 1/2 hours.. It's called an alternator charger but it's really not.

The rear cargo area of the Bronco is small and this is going to be a cramped fit but I think it will work. Instead of charging at 100Wh from the Broncos 12V, I'll be able to charge at 600Wh, or 6 times faster..

If the fridge battery pack runs low at camp because I didn't go out off-roading that day, then no problem, I can use my tiny 100W solar panels (not ideal), I can use my small Honda generator (I'd rather not) or I can just idle the Bronco, or make a fuel / grocery run to recharge the battery pack..

I have everything ordered and on the way. I *think* it will all fit and work but my measurements might be a little sketchy / off.. LOL.

I'll dry fit everything where I think it needs to go before installing the 'alternator charger'.. If all goes well, maybe a install next week..

Oh no you don't. I set up like you did before and loving it. So I'm not upgrading..... LoL

Kidding aside. I definitely like my iceco units. Using them in the bronco, F350 and expedition.
I wish you had posted before I bought my yeti.

Yeah the old setup is absolutely awesome. Glad you are liking it!

I hope the new one is even better but it's going to take up all the rear cargo space to do it... My hope is to stretch out the time before recharges are needed for the days where I just want to chill in camp and not drive the Bronco.. Also, reduce the time it takes to charge.

After this swaparoo, I should be able to idle the Bronco for an hour or so to fully charge the new battery that's twice the capacity. This new battery is also larger which creates an issue in the small Bronco 2dr. The fridge I am swapping to is also larger which again, creates issues in the small Bronco 2dr..

I could have kept the same setup I have now, and that you have, and just added the 'alternator charger' and it would pretty much be the same. I am just adding a larger power bank and a larger fridge into what's basically the same setup if that makes sense...

Okay, I am a maroon and my measurements were a wee bit off = LOL.. The Anker C1000 Gen 2 is too long = Yawn! I'd also rather keep the alt charger and the battery pack from the same brand ---> Soooooo...

Next plan of action, maybe! 🤷

So plan #2 will be kicked in to action after I call them later and get the stuff on order.. My 1st plan of action would have easily worked in a 4dr Bronco but the 2dr is space challenged....

I've never heard of Dabbsson but from what I can tell, they get good reviews..

Might want to check out this little jewel. Not sure of the size you need but it seemed small to me. https://www.ankersolix.com/products/a1755111?ref=naviMenu_1_2_3_3_img&variant=49702278529354
I thought I saw one for $250 but that might have been another brand. not the DJI i mentioned in another post.

Edit: sorry they were in the 349 price.

I have about 14" to use in-between the d-ring hooks that will be used to secure / tie down the battery pack and the fridge.. The battery pack pretty much needs to fit within that 14" space, length wise, with a little room left over to strap it down to the d-rings..

I looked at the C800 as well but it's 14.6" long so probably a no go (???). I had hoped the C1000 Gen2 would fit as I read the handles were included in its measurements but it was still a tad bit too long.

Width and hight are not an issue, it's the length that is... The C800 might fit as I am sure its dimensions include the handles but at this point, I don't really want to roll the dice again..

The Dabbsson 600L I mentioned is 12.8" long including the handle so it should work... Well, maybe.. LOL

After dry fitting the fridge and the Anker C1000 Gen 2 today, I am not sure I'll have room for the 'alternator charger'... Unless I mount it to the rear seat back. I know there is a metal plate behind the fabric just not sure how sturdy a mount there would be..

I ordered the Dabbsson 600L and will see if it fits. If it does then I'll order the alternator charger. I do need to research into mounting something (the alt charger) to the rear seat - seat backs. I wonder if the metal plate behind the fabric is thick enough and strong enough..

If this does not work then it's back to the drawing board.. 😂

I am not trying to run you down rabbit holes, I have been looking into these power stations and those were ones that kept coming to the top. I have a tad more room in the moredoor so I don't have to look at the size. thinking I will just yank the Battery out of the teardrop and use one of these powerstations as a power source.

Rabbit holes are fine at this point as I am trying to get my new vision for the setup to work as I am struggling with the 2dr size constraints..

The new, larger, fridge fits fine with plenty of room to spare, it's the power bank that is causing the struggles. I could just keep using my Dometic PLB40 as it would easily fit in the space between the d-rings but I'd prefer to up the Wh / Ah of the power bank.

I think the Dabbsson 600L will work but I'll have to wait for it to be delivered to be sure. They also make an alternator charger so if it fits, I'll order it but that creates another issue.. Where to mount it...

Has anyone mounted anything to the seat backs? There is a metal plate behind the fabric and the alt charger only weights like a pound and a half so I am thinking that might work...

I have seen folks build these things you could always build a custom one to fit. But it might end up costing you more than an off the shelf unit.

I can't because I am incompetent err, I mean challenged, when it come to doing stuff like that.. I'd cause more harm than good.. 😂

I got more information from Dabbsson today on the alt charger. The XT60 cable that runs from the alt charger to the power bank is 6.5 feet long.

While I don't trust my measuring skillz (use that skillz word lightly), this should easily be enough to mount the alt charger control box under the pass side seat then run that cable along the pass side panels to where the battery power bank will be... I assume I could use a mega strong velcro pad (lock n loop?) to 'mount' the alt charger box under the seat.

That might be the plan. It says to make sure it has ventilation for air flow but I assume under the rear seat would be fine as people put amps and stuff under them that I assume need more ventilation than this alt box would..

That would be a super simple install that even my incompetent challenged self could handle. Run power cable from Bronco's battery to the alt box under the seat then run the XT60 cable from the alt box to rear cargo area where the battery power bank will be.. Bing, bang, boom = done! Well, maybe.... 😶 😂

Got everything installed. And it all fit nicely.. 👍

The Dabbsson 600L (768 Wh / 64 Ah) fit with a little bit of room to spare. While this is less Wh / Ah than I originally wanted, it's still more than I was getting from my Dometic PLB 40 (512 Wh / 40 Ah)..

The Dabbsson 'Alternator' Charger was installed under the passenger side seat and secured down using heavy duty loop n lock velcro. The charger has a breaker switch on the output side of the charger but did not have a fuse on the battery side of it. I added an inline fuse to the run at the Broncos battery to be safe..

Setup was easy for both and they both connected to the Dabbsson app. After updating them both I finished setting them up. The Dabbsson charger set your voltage based on which Dabbsson power bank you are using. After selecting the 600L in the app it set the charging voltage to 16V...

I believe the Bronco accessory ports put out 90-100 watts. With this setup, I was getting about 180 watts when driving (less when idling).. While not the super fast charging I was hoping for, it's still a little faster than using the Bronco 12V accessory port.. I'll need to do more testing to see but this will def NOT charge the 600L in under 2 hours like I thought if the 600L were completely empty. More like 4 hours..

It'll get a good test run next month when I head out on my 1st camping and off-road trip of the year.. I'll make sure to bring some canned food just in case this all fails and everything in the fridge spoils.. 👀

The plan is to keep everything strapped down in the Bronco permanently like I did with my previous setup.

Now, when not out on trips, all I need to do is throw the breaker switch for the alt charger to the off position and power off the battery bank.
When heading out on a trip, throw the breaker for the alt charger to the on position and power on the battery bank. Easy - peasy right? Fingers crossed this all works.. 😂

Curent setup:

  • Iceco APL35 Car Fridge - 35L - Can be used as a dual zone if wanted
  • Dabbsson 600L Power Station - 768 Watt Hours / 64 Amp Hours
  • Dabbsson Alternator Charger - Set at 16V

So far all is good with the new setup.. I got back to camp yesterday at about 4:30 pm and the fridge ran off the Dabbsson power bank until 9:30 am the next day when I hit the trails.

Fridge was set to 30 degrees and the daytime temps were high 70’s. It got down to about 40 overnight. The fridge was also set to eco mode.

17 hours running off of the battery bank and it used 29%. Not bad.

The only bummer is the alt charger only charges the Dabbsson at 16V so not much faster than just using the Broncos 12V.. Not a huge deal as it will recharge when out on the trails.
