I also heard a rumor that the driving force behind it has left Ford.
Interesting. I didn't hear that specifically... but honestly I wouldn't be surprised at all.
I do know that Ford (and many companies) are hurting for IT workers right now. Work-from-home really shook up the IT industry as a whole, and people that lived in... say... Michigan could now work for major Silicon Valley companies without actually living anywhere near California. If I'm a manager at Ford and looking for the best place to allocate my (now limited) developer talent, I'm putting them towards products like the Mach-E and Ford Lightning, not a map application that will be offered for free to Bronco owners.
My opinion... if Ford isn't able to actively develop the application, they should just sign a contract with a company like onXmaps. Sell them the intellectual properly, have them integrate it into their onX Offroad app, and provide a free 1 year trial subscription to onX for Bronco owners.
