Rear Brake Pads

Went in for an oil change and tire rotation today and found out my rear brake pads are at 0. The dealership said the brakes wore out from mud being caked on the rear calipers. Yes….there was mud on them but I don’t think it was anymore than what was on the front calipers.

Told me I needed new calipers, pads and rotors and this is the quote. I asked if the calipers could be compressed and was told that once the pads are at 0 the calipers will not compress so they have to replace them.

Here is the quote for the work.

Of course I will be doing my own work for this. If you do your own brake work, watch this video!

New pads came in yesterday. Took all of 45 minutes to get them swapped out. There was still some pad left, so it was not metal on metal. I did not turn the rotors. Next time I replace the pads, I will replace the rotors also.

I purchased oem pads and they came with new bolts for mounting the calipers and new clips/guides(not sure of the correct name) that touch the ends of the pads.

Now that I’ve done them once, I’m sure I can do a pad swap in under 30 minutes. That includes lubricating the pins. :)

Great info. Appreciate you taking the time to let us know how it went! 🐎

Good news, but I'm still wondering why the rear pads were spent in that short mileage. Have you looked at the front pads?

Front pads were at 6. This is a number the dealership uses for their gauges. Scale goes from 0-10 with 10 being new and 0 being used up. 6 means there is over half the pads left.

They said the reason why was from mud on the calipers and not being cleaned off.

I have a Hummer H3T. Pretty much the same thing happened with the rear brakes, but due to rust. I've taken the H3T to New England too many times in the winter.

The H3T rusted so bad the rust just attacks everything. It froze the calipers on the guide pins. It got down to metal with mine because the tuning ribbons rusted off the pads first so i never heard the warning. 😆

But I just can't see mud causing this issue. I'd think one good drive in rain would wash the mud away.

Interesting case.

BTW - a little more info that he forgot to mention - He used a C-clamp on the piston and did not have to use a special tool to turn them in which is great news!

I wouldn’t recommend a C clamp which is why I didn’t mention it. The back of the caliper is plastic/electric and I did not have a good place to put the C clamp. It worked, but I wasn’t pushing the piston straight in.

Thanks for the update. In addition to lubricating the pins, did you also lube the tabs on the pads that fit into the clips/guides?

I did not as I was worried about them holding dirt/sand in the grease and really getting stuck.

I do not believe the factory ones were lubricated.

I have never had an issue but I understand your concern. If they start squeak/squealing you know why & what to do…
