Possible Steering Rack issue?

So, last weekend, I completed a 600 mile rally across West Virginia, which included some pretty rough trail.
There was nothing insanely hard, or technical, but a few of the roads were just pot holes for 40 miles straight.

(pic is McKendree Road in the New River Gorge)

After completing the race around P20 with a time of 20:14, I noticed on my drive home that my steering wouldn't self center at all.
If you turned left & let go of the wheel, it just wanted to keep going left (or right - it does it both ways, though it feels worse to the left)

While changing my oil Monday, I inspected all the components - tie rods, ball joints, etc in the front suspension/steering.
No obvious culprit like a bent tie rod or anything.
So I scheduled an alignment.
Had that done today, & he told me it wasn't bad, I'd knocked the toe out on the right front a bit, but mostly was ok.
He suspects that the steering rack is having an issue because of the like 25 water crossings I did Saturday.

So long story short, before I spend $1000 on a new steering rack (and another 700 on the ProCal that is required to swap it), does anyone have any suggestions on how to possibly diagnose/repair whatever is happening with mine?
It's a 2022 Wildtrak, Hoss 2.0 that wasn't part of the steering rack recall before (Jan 22 build date).

My brother & I are fairly handy, though we don't have a lift (I could borrow a garage with one if needed), so if there's a way to possibly fix it without spending thousands, I'm open to it.

TIA for any advice or ideas.

Any noticeable fractures in the steering rack casting? Torn axel or tie rod boots? I’m guessing that it will require a full steering rack removal, tear down and inspection. Take a look at Vasher Designs upgraded steering rack that utilizes the guts of your existing 2.0 rack, but has a vastly improved strength and specs over OEM.

I took a quick look at the rack last night while I was changing my diff fluids & didn't see anything.
But I'm gonna drop the skid again today & take a closer look in the daylight.

I hadn't heard of this Vasher. It's a nice looking part, but at that price point, I'd probably be more comfortable just spending the extra 1k & going with 74 weld & never worrying about it again. 3800 is pretty spicy for keeping the stock internals.

Did you check the rack cap for cracks? That thing is ridiculously thin.. It's almost like Ford said hey, 'let's make this thing as thin as humanly possible'.

See the thread I'll link for a comparison between the stock rack cap and the 74Weld..

I have the 74Weld on my Bronco. You can see my thread on it here:

It’s hard to remember now but I think the 74 Weld also uses the internal parts from your core rack. And with 74 Weld they no longer support a1.0 or 2.0 rack swap. So if you do go with the 3.0 version you would need a 3.0 donor core plus the pro cal tune for it. There is no less expensive with any of this stuff🤣

I think the 74weld stage 3 comes with new Hoss 3.0 internals from them. I don't think it requires a donor.

And yeah, no cheap fixes here. My point was more that if you're spending 3800, might as well spend 5k & get the absolute best one available.

As it is, if I need a new rack, I'll most likely be getting the Ford Performance 3.0 version & figuring out how to install with FDRS, as it seems everyone has issues with the pro Cal tuner when doing this swap.
This is the most in line with my budget.

And if it turns out there isn’t any real carnage, you could get one of the steering rack end caps. That always seems to be the detonation spot.

I just took a look at their site. Nice that they now either retrofit with a stage 2 or cover it all with a stage 3. Excellent products with either brand.

So, to anyone who's paying attention.
The OEM tie rod boot failed. Ripped entirely away from the clamp.
PXL_20250316_200145091.jpg
This allowed water into the rack.
Today my rack was frozen & wouldn't turn at all (temp was down to 20 last night).

So I guess now the question is - do I tear the rack out & try to clean/salvage it or do I just bite the bullet & spend 1100 on the new one?

Any thoughts? And please, my budget currently doesn't allow for a 74weld upgrade.
It will be the Ford Performance M-3200-WT kit

This exact same thing happened to a YouTuber I follow a while back..

He tears his apart and tried to clean it up in this video ( the aftermath ) but I don't think that worked and he needed a new rack..

I mention checking tie rod boot clamps in my post here:

https://thebronconation.com/welcome...badlands-2dr-build-t.20329/page-4#post-324529

A shop did my 6100 install and failed to clamp the tie rod boot down. I mention water could have gotten there at the end of that post.

If you don't want to click my post link, here is what I said that post:

"Always double check work, especially if a shop does it.. Notice anything missing from the Icon tie rod area in that last photo?

The clamp for the tie rod boot is MIA. I noticed it and zip tied it down.. I am not sweating it as it's a 5 cent zip tie but if water had gotten in there, it could have been ugly."

Since the stock boot failed could it be a warranty issue? I am guessing they'd try and deny the claim but it might be worth a shot before spending the cash on a new rack..

Good luck, sorry to hear of your troubles..

Yeah, I am familiar with David's video & the trouble a missing clamp caused him.
I'm leaning towards getting the upgraded 3.0 rack, I'm just nervous about the install, specifically the programming flash.
I might try to find someone close by who has the ability to program the rack for me since I don't have the procal or the correct adapter for FDRS.

Could you try and claim it under warranty? I am sure they'd deny but might be worth a shot before forking out the cashola..

Hoo boy.. I suppose it could be worth a shot, but I'm about 99.9% certain it would be denied since I'm at 63,000 miles on a 2022 (Jan 22 Build Date) & am not even the 1st owner (purchased used last January with 45k miles
