Adding aftermarket performance parts without upgrading the surrounding vehicle underpinnings means risking failures at the weakest unchanged point. It’s basic reliability engineering. In the case of the Ford Bronco, some owners have upgraded to heavier wheels or larger tires without toughening up the stock steering system. That leaves the stock tie rods as the exposed element.

Result: We’ve seen some examples of tie rod failure when rock-stomping some difficult off-road trails or challenges.

Read the full article, and tell us what you think. Have you increased your tire size or wheel weight? Will you try to get the Ford Performance severe-duty steering rack and tie rods?

I'll say, that snapping of the tie rod in the video WILL make you wince.

Ordered and inner tie rod and boot for a spare. I am hoping with the half billet tie rod and extra support sleeve plus good driving I will be fine. The inner rod can still snap at the boot and work as a fuse, as has been discussed. I will probably carry the OEM 1st half of the tie rod and the new inner tie rod and boot for complete back up. I will at least carry the inner tie rod and boot. What do you think? Should I just carry just the inner tie rod and boot since I've upgraded to a half billet tie rod? I looks like I should get some more tools. I am not sure if @Tricky Dick tools will work for the Raptor. I thought I read something about that. Will have to check out more. ThanksIMG 55555.jpg

I think they will but I haven't had a chance to try them and I'm not going to rubber stamp it unless I'm certain.

I do list the entire contents of the kit and anyone is free to copy (and tweak) it on their own of course. I'm mostly offering convenience (and an instruction sheet in case you don't know how and don't have cell service to look it up).

Thanks, with the half billet from FMI (picture above) and the inner tie rod on the Rapter being 16mm rather than 15mm what reasons could you see the kit would not working with me supplying the correct inner tie rod? Any thoughts would help. I would like to order the kit and I know you can't rubber stamp it without trying it; however, any additional information would be helpful.

Thanks again.

I don't know if the puller will fit the outer tie rod stud or if the crescent wrenches will fit the inner tie rod hex.

It took me a while to find a puller deep enough for even the standard outer tie rods. I'm probably undercharging for he one I ended up with, I see them listed around $50 alone.

Great, that is good to know. I gives me some idea of what to figure out. Thanks again.

I have not installed them yet. Per everything I have seen and heard they are fine to install with no other changes. I personally feel that the combination of the new tie rods and changing the end cap and bushing is for me the way to go. For now the tie rods are in the wings waiting, just in case, but I plan on installing them sometime in the new year. Another good add if not changing out the end cap is the BroncBuster bushing. I guess the biggest factor is how much off roading we are doing and how hard we are doing it.

Tim from what I have seen if you upgrade the ite rods the rack is likely to fail I personally wouldn't do the tie rods without the bushing.

That is the main reason I am waiting to install. I am waiting to purchase either the BB bushing or the end cap with the bushing. Decisions, decisions. I love to throw money after money!

Pretty much my thoughts on the tie rod issues......failures happen but one can accelerate those failures if not thinking about some of this.
Thanks for sharing this. Informative video for sure.

I am glad you posted this. I thought I should do it after seeing it yesterday. I find Matt knowledgable and he has common sense.. I haven't seen a video from him I haven't liked.

Yeah, good video - Very helpful info! We know something bad's about to happen when bouncing starts, his front locker comments & low offset wheels are spot-on too.

Trying to add spare tie rods to our wheeling kit. My experience on FordParts.com's very limited and not sure I'm looking at the correct part. Bronco's a '23 Wildtrak Hoss 3.0 suspension.

I've saved our Bronco with VIN on FordParts.com, and my parts search led to Part No. Part #: NB3Z3280D - Steering Tie Rod End. Tie Rod Kit (Adrenalin Package). Usage: 05/17/2022, Bronco 2021-, Adrenalin Package, With Rough Road Suspension.

Obviously, while the description sounds like great fun - it isn't very helpful. There is a color parts diagram that I'm not smart enough to understand.

Is this what I'm lookingt for?

Cheers

I could be wrong but I am coming up with NON HOSS 3 using that number. (non ford parts sites) and I am having a hard time finding the correct one.

Edit: well the ford site keeps saying it is the correct number...

Here are the numbers that I've come up from B6G.
NB3Z-3280-D and it comes with the boot and both clamps per side.
The inner without the boot or clamp is NB3Z-3280-C

NB3Z-3A130-B is the right outer.
NB3Z-3A130-C is the left outer.

This also seems to confirm your part number.

With key help from Mr Deano Bronc & Unicorn, began cobbling together our wheeling tool bag & spares for WildTrak Hoss 3.0.

Here are the spare parts - left & right outer tie rods and an inner tie rod kit. Gotta follow on order for the inner's stop nut.

Tool Roll Bag Tie Rod Spares Jan-24.jpeg

The hand tool kit's only a start. Just for these parts, we need 24mm wrench for inner's stop nut and probably 1/2 drive 43/4mm crows foot for inner's rack connection. The tie rod parts are in the roll on the rightside here. There's not room for the inner's boot in the roll though.
Tool Roll Bag Tools Jan-24.jpeg

I'd really like to keep this kit as compact as possible. So far, this Ryker, size XL from Amazon rolls up pretty good.
Tool Roll Bag Ryker XL Jan-24.jpeg
Hope we'll never need these spares, and having them on-board may only force old man Murphy to find something else to break - He has LOTs 'o options too!

If this is truly an issue and I think it probably is, I wonder when Ford will realize this is a problem that quite a few Bronco owners would like to address with an upgrade to the Hoss 3.0 steering rack and tie rods. The thing that bothers me is that the rack and tie rods are available and will bolt right in but Ford won't allow dealers to flash it so there aren't all kinds of compatibility issues. Oh well maybe someday it will happen.

Why don't they just put the heavy duty parts on it?
Don't want to hear about cost or weight, with the 10k price increase they should put the parts on and eat the cost.
