2.3 manual noise when engine is cold

Had my Bronco a couple months. 2000 miles. I have the 2.3 manual in my Badlands. When I start it up in the morning I hear what sounds like a grinding, somethings loose kind of noise. When I push the clutch in it seems to go away. It also seems to go away after it has been driven a while. Anyone else experiencing this? Is it normal? I have an appointment to bring the truck in tomorrow 1/12/22. I will let everyone know how I make out.

That's the worst advice I've ever heard. You aren't experiencing what everyone else is so maybe you shouldn't give advise.
Haha sorry you feel that way. I did hear the noise in 2021. Then it went away. Cheers

I guess you've been designated as the who gets to be on what thread police.
They simply said they had a noise and it went away. Maybe others have experienced that as well, just like some like me still have the noise.
Not that big of a deal. It's called sharing experiences. That is what forums are for.

That’s definitely something my wife would say. The epitome of I told you so.. Thanks for the detailed information. It makes more sense to me now. 🤪
Called the dealer's service department today, to report the dreaded transmission noise. Gave them the TSB number, they said they would get the parts ordered and get it taken care of. 🤞🤞
I certainly hope this works. I picked my Bronco up with 54 miles on it and it was making yhe grinding noise at 43degrees. Eventually went away until the next time it was parked and I restarted. Everyday it is quite embarrassing as someone else mentioned to start my 60k+ Badlands and watch people stare. Thanks to all the Nation members that have been pushing Ford to find a resolution. Fingers crossed!!

An actual resolution would be nice. I started hearing is at 6500 miles when the temps in Maine went below freezing. It may have been making the noise when it was warmer and I just didn’t notice. Been into the dealer and the tech heard it. They’re following the TSB so it’s the parts. Just waiting. The sound does subside with a good warm up and driving. It hasn’t gotten worse sounding. I’m imagining that at some point the final fix will come. Question is when…

Mine was officially diagnosed this afternoon and now we are in the waiting for parts phase. I’m picking it up in the morning and will drop it back off when the parts come in, may be next week, may be sometime in July. Either way I have the tech telling me it’s drivable so not worried about warranty claim being denied if something goes catastrophically wrong in the meantime, think I will cut back on my off roading fun until it’s fixed though. Don’t want to deal with trying to get a tow from the middle of nowhere if the transmission gives out.

Having the TSB is helpful and hopeful. However, unless the parts have been retooled, I’m thinking the problem doesn’t get truly resolved. It just gets a slow extension.

For those curious what it sounds like...

Note that I have a VERY minor case. It is barely noticable sometimes. Some of the folks over on Bronco6G have transmissions that sounds like it's eating itself alive.

Headphones recommended.

Don’t worry it gets louder with time 😂

I've got 200 miles of below freezing temps on my MY23 manual so far and it's as quiet as a church mouse on Sunday morning!! Will update if that changes.
My church mouse must've swallowed some marbles because at around 2,500 miles the rattling noises have began on cold start ups. Goes away after a few minutes......son of a gun 😕

The visit to the dealer ended up in ordering a new transmission vice fixing. Three days later an automatic transmission showed up at dealer (wish I was joking) they tell me three weeks now. So I had my front windows tinted so people cant see the idiot driving the 60k noise maker. WTF Ford!!!

Sounds about right, it is ford we're talking about here.

All my pars have been in for weeks but they "don't have availability" to get me in until the end of March. Noise just keeps getting worse. Mind you, they ordered the parts in December. The only reason I knew the came in is bacause I went in to see them.

Love my bronco but couldn't be less impressed with "quality is # 1" Ford Company.

Get screwed on the front end with them shipping out rigs with crappy parts and get screwed on the back end, with them taking months to get you in to fix it.

Ouch, wonder if your dealer is short on technicians. Seems to be a common theme these days at many dealers and repair shops.

At the moment my dealer is only scheduling a few days out for maintenance and 2-3 weeks out for major repairs. So I guess I should feel relatively lucky. Although the big holdup for them in parts availability. So even if they have room on the schedule 2-3 weeks in advance it could take them months to get parts depending on what the issue is.

Take apart the transmission, replace the 5th/6th gear synchronizer rings, reassemble transmission.

Worthwhile to note that there are lots of reports of people who had the issue, took it to the dealer to complete the TSB, and the technicians have come back and said they didn't see any visible damage to the transmission. We've also had a few people who had the TSB completed and the issue returned within a thousand miles.

The components needed to complete the repair are on national backorder, so I don't see any reason to have your dealer fix an issue that may not be causing damage and may not actually fix the noise. I'd give it some time for Ford/Magna to figure out exactly what is going on... especially since you are 150 miles away from a dealer. You have a three year factory warranty, and the issue will likely go away as the weather warms in the next 2-4 months... so I would just wait until next fall if I was in your shoes. Hopefully by then the engineers will have a clearer sense of the issue and how to actually fix it.

Thanks everyone. I have some of the grinding noise on my Black Diamond manual transmission. I’m monitoring the threads to see if/when I should ask the dealer to address it. Keep any thoughts and updates coming!

If you are close to your dealer and can sacrifice a few hours away from your Black Diamond, you may want to take it to them just to document the issue and get a case submitted. It helps Ford understand the scope of the problem. If you are 150 miles away (like @Rayocaballo is), then I wouldn't bother, pretty clear we don't have a definitive fix yet, so not worth the trip.

As for updates from me... my dealer is working with Ford to figure out what the next steps are. I'll update everyone on this thread as it progresses.

Good advice and thanks, RagnarKon.

I'll be visiting the dealer for an oil change and a couple other minor items in a few weeks, so will make sure to document the manual trans issue then.

Go now!! Will save you time later.

I'd be curious what % of the manuals are having this issue.

Sounds like it still hasn't been addressed at the production level. Sounds like 2023s are still experiencing this issue.
