2.3 manual noise when engine is cold

Had my Bronco a couple months. 2000 miles. I have the 2.3 manual in my Badlands. When I start it up in the morning I hear what sounds like a grinding, somethings loose kind of noise. When I push the clutch in it seems to go away. It also seems to go away after it has been driven a while. Anyone else experiencing this? Is it normal? I have an appointment to bring the truck in tomorrow 1/12/22. I will let everyone know how I make out.

The Throwout bearing or really any of the things on the input shaft of the transmission that may have been making the noise doesn't get replaced with a transmission replacement. So it will be interesting to see if the noise continues.
My initial thought based on what you described was that the throwout bearing was possibly getting held against something and not fully released due to a clearance issue that only shows up when it's cold. Almost like a lubricant was incorrect.
That was something though they could have verified with a drive. They have microphones they can attach to areas on a vehicle and then take it for a drive to localize where the sound is coming from. So assuming they localized it to inside the transmission, then that doesn't bode too well. Hopefully, it was a bad bearing or error in assembly resulting in the problem and not a larger issue in that transmission. That it would go away when warmed up means it was a very subtle issue.

Great information! Good to know. Thank you!!

If you remember in my update post from 2/17, they mentioned it that it could be "throw out bearing or 6th gear" which was weird to me. I would assume, and I'm not a transmission expert that if it was an issue we with the 6th gear they would replace the transmission and just not try to repair it.

A quick note on transmissions. Depending on the gear means different shafts may be spinning at different speeds, including bearings and gears. So it could be the frequency of the noise that had them think 6th gear as the frequency of the noise can be used to identify the speed, and that speed would only occur with specific gear. When you are dealing with something so mechanical with a manual transmission is, the possible causes are greatly reduced and lots of telltale items to track down the problem.

What’s the latest? Any recent updates for you?? My Bronco is still “out of service”...been at Ford (service dept) since 2/27.

No updates, just reached out to the service dept to see if I can get one. As of Friday they had not heard from Ford on an ETA for a new transmission. Anything from your service dept?

Same boat. I contacted the dealership to ask about an update. They said the transmission was ordered (once approved to do so) 2 days ago, on March 7th. They could not give me an ETA. The service director that has been my main contact is out of town this week (he’s actually been communicating with me and keeping me in the loop, as much as possible. He even told me he was out of town and who the point of contact will be during this week). I also called FMC this afternoon. They opened a case on their end and I should hear back from that advocate tomorrow, once she gets all the details/information regarding this problem from the dealership. Long story long; still standing by....

I’ll keep you updated as much as I can. Good luck to you, and anyone else experiencing the same thing, moving forward. For me personally, this wait is by far more excruciating than the initial wait (waiting on the Bronco to be built, shipped, etc.)

I would think the wait would be very excruciating as you either already paid for it or are paying for it while it sits there doing nothing. When you are waiting for the order it's just a dream. Now it's yours and you can't use it.

Exactly. You get it (:
I’m still paying for it and paying for insurance, all while it loses it it’s value sitting at the dealership (not being serviced might I add).

UPDATE: Heard back from my Ford representative today( not my local dealer of course). So she said the transmission was delivered which is great news. Bad news there are (2) other parts that are needed that are part of the transmission that were not delivered. I couldn't take the call at work so I'll have to find out what they are. Those parts are on backorder(naturally). One will be in on March 18th and the other wont be in till April 1st! UGH! So I will continue to wait.

I feel for you! I spoke to my advocate today from FMC as well and she told me that she has an ETA for my transmission to be at the dealership; that’s April 1st BUT I shouldn’t hold my breath because it’s on back order (imagine that). Please let me know what those other 2 parts are once you find out. I’ll want to ensure it’s all ordered and “on its way” (when it arrives will all remain a mystery).

Again, my Bronco can be classified as a lemon on March 29th. It’s obvious I won’t have it back before then. I’m curious to know what your experience was like when you had a lemon (nissan vehicle) previously? Is it a headache? Worth it?

I don’t event want to type this message, but I’m beginning to have some similar noises. I have around 2200 miles. Cooler temps, start it up with clutch pedal in and it’s fine. Let it out (in neutral) and the somewhat subtle grinding begins. After about a minute it goes away.

My build week of 11/17/21.

did it get worse than what I described?

I will let you know once I have a chance to call her. As far as the Lemon Law it was pretty easy in NJ. Make sure you keep all the records.

My build week was second week of October ‘21. Took delivery on Nov 6.

From my experience it did get progressively louder.

OH NO! I wouldn’t want this to happen to anyone! But it’s most definitely happening and obviously an issue. From my experience, the noise gets worse. At first I tried to consider everything (what I was used to driving to the Bronco was a significant change) and not overreact. It got to the point where I couldn’t ignore it. It made me cringe to hear/listen to...especially at the bus stop in the mornings. My build week was 12/6/21. Took delivery January 28, 2022. Scheduled for service (due to the sound) February 28, 2022. Been there ever since. My Bronco had less than 800 miles on it when I dropped it off.

Have been listening to mine but so far so good. I've got just under 200 miles on, but will be driving down to Kansas with it next week so will be putting some miles on. Really hoping I won't have any issues

Definitely the place to be! I, too, find these forums very beneficial!

I just want to add that the noise comes and goes. I’ll hear it, then it’ll taper off and I think it’s okay...until I hear it again. Not sure if that has anything to do with the auto start/stop feature or not. Keep your ears peeled.
