When In Moab

For those of you that have been, did any of you ride the "Behind The Reef" trail. It is in the San Rafael Swell. A couple of the videos say it's about 1.5 hours from Moab. If you have what is your trail rating and feed back on the area?

Thanks,
Dave

When you get there, check with Jeep and ATV rental outfits. They probably know. Then there's this, which I found very helpful and accurate.

I've only been there once and, no, haven't been on it
I looked it up in the Trails off road app. Which was fairly accurate on the trails we did.

It's listed as a moderate trail with a few difficult optional obstacles.
13 miles long one way and about 3 hours.
Recommended for a stock SUV with 4L.
Camping hiking and views.

I saw it on a TrailRecon video, but we did not make it to it. 😞

I have been on trails in the San Rafael Swell area - northwest of Moab - off I-70. One trail is called "Behind the Rocks" - not the same trail as near Moab. And another one called "Wild Horses". Both were easy to moderate, but this was about 15 - 16 years ago. Very beautiful in that area.

I may have current info on that area the 2nd week of May. The NM4W is doing their annual Moab trip this week or next and they do one day in this area, I think.

Actually, if you have been to Moab and done any trail riding, you’ve seen WHY they are closing trails…. Drivers on all kinds of ORV’s riding wherever the heck they want without regard to maintaining trail integrity… Those of us at Moab last week personally experienced this destruction, so trail closures are not a huge surprise….

Moab is a pretty fragile environment, and people not abiding by even the simplest regulations will be the cause of more trail closures…

Agree! Blake was explaining that a lot of the trails that were closed were because they ran parallel to other trails or came out to the same place. This I can understand. It seemed like it was just a basic "close all trails" in certain areas and maybe I need to study it more. The BLM put up a lot of fancy fencing in area on Seven Mile Rim trail that was run on Friday.
But so often Forest Rangers and BLM can make some bone headed decisions on trail closures. Our club has been in discussions with Jemez district near Albuquerque. They closed a lot of trails several years ago and some trails ended up being "out-and-back" when before they connected to other trails. They said that the conversation went well, and they couldn't even have scripted it any better than the way it went. That was at the December meeting, and I've only made it back to one meeting since then.

We all need to stay engaged in our areas as well as around the country!

Also, you can support the Blue Ribbon Collation. They work hard to keep trails open. https://www.sharetrails.org/
