That's a terrible idea, when do we start?

Jan 28, 2026

Folks,

I wanted to document the saga of my Bronco Badlands suffering a catastrophic engine failure while out 4-wheeling.

My Bronco is a 2022 Badlands Sasquatch, built in January 2022, with just over 20,000 miles. Ironically, I had just picked it up from the dealer after completing the 20K service 4 days earlier.

In some ways, I was lucky with the timing. I had already driven about 2.5 hours on the highway to reach the trailhead without any issues. The trail itself was nothing extreme — essentially a dirt fire road, no obstacles, nothing technical. About 15 minutes into the run, I heard a loud BANG. The dash immediately lit up like a Christmas tree and the engine shut off.

I got out, walked around the front, and quickly saw oil pouring from the underside of the Bronco. After a quick assessment, it was clear there was nothing that could be repaired in the field. We ended up dragging it back to the trailhead, and I had AAA tow it to my dealership’s service department.

It took a few days to get the Bronco looked at, but it’s now confirmed that this was a catastrophic internal engine failure. Further inspection showed that a connecting rod exited through the oil pan, so there was significant internal damage.

Discussions with my dealer and @Ford Motor Company are now underway regarding a warranty engine replacement.

After nearly two weeks, I’ve finally been provided a loaner, so at least I’m mobile again. The loaner is currently approved for 10 days, which I don’t expect will be sufficient. Realistically, I’m anticipating at least a month, possibly longer if engines are backordered — but we’ll see. Hopefully I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I’ll continue to update this thread as things progress, in case it helps anyone else down the road.

Well folks, it's nearly three weeks since the failure, and so far no progress. The dealer has looked at it, and as I said before, it's pretty clearly an internal failure since the rod left the chat via the oil pan. But that's all they are telling me, other than @Ford Motor Company keeps asking for more pictures. @Ford Motor Company has still not approved the warranty repair so it still sits at Galpin Ford. That and they want their loaner back which will leave me without transportation. In the meantime, I continue to pay for the truck...

Hi there. I’d like to assist with your concern. Could you please send us a DM with your VIN and mileage so I can look into this further?

Just a quick progress update, or really lack of progress update. Ford wanted the dealer to tear down the engine and send them some more pictures. That's been completed. Next they wanted a "parts list", which I don't understand, I would think that after a catastrophic failure they would replace the entire engine. But they tell me that's their process ... last time I talked to the dealer (Friday) they said expect to get it back by the end of March ... excuse me if I think that's a bit overly optimistic based on the pace so far.

The parts list provided to me for for replacing the cam phasers on my Bronco was five pages long. There are soooo many one-time use nuts and bolts throughout the rebuild process. And that was the parts list Ford provided to the dealership in the repair kit. I can't imagine a tech having to put something like that together from scratch for a warranty repair.

Well, the saga continues ... I called for a status and the dealer told me that they sent @Ford Motor Company the list of parts they were asking for. Then @Ford Motor Company asked them for a list of all aftermarket parts that were on my Bronco. This is getting ridiculous, just ship the new motor @Ford Motor Company already! My new "guesstimate" from the dealer is now sometime in April before I get my Bronco back!

There's no excuse for that. The thing about machines is that the cause and effect is generally straight forward.
I'm so frustrated with companies dragging out a problem that could have resolution in a matter of days.
I have an insurance battle getting close to 2 years. So I feel your frustration.
