I have a 2021 Bronco Sport Outer Banks with 50K miles. The vehicle was making a rumbling noise when turning the wheel to pull out of the garage or backing out of parking space. I took it to the repair shop to have it looked at and diagnostics. Repair shop has told me the Rear Differential needs to be replaced; about $3K. Seems like a significant repair for car that is going on 4 years and only 50K miles. Has anyone else had this situation and how did it go?

Hi, I have a 2021 Bronco Sport Outerbanks, it does the shuddering when turning and it is getting worst, no I can be sure it will do it every time I drive and every time I turn. There are several posts about the issue. I mentioned it when I took it in for an oil change and recall stuff. They told me I had to take it in when the tech was in and it would be 200.00. Of course they already know what's going on but you know they gotta milk it, then they will keep saying they can't find what's going on until the warranty is expired. Like everything else. I'm started to get really dissapointed, I really love the look and all the cool extras in it so , kinda want to trade and get into something else, I always really wanted the Big Bronco but after all this my husband isn't too keen on that idea and it's more money to deal with the dealership on more recalls and issues. I am reading what people are saying about the Big Broncos too. I don't know what to do. Probably try to get it fixed for the time being and then decide if I want to trade and what for? I know all vehicle have recalls.

That's not how dealers and warranties work. They get paid the same whether you pay for it or if Ford pays for it. The dealer doesn't work for Ford, it's a franchise. So when they do warranty work, they send the bill to Ford instead of handing it to you. And most dealers like doing warranty work because they will get paid. When they hand you a $3k bill, they have to hope you aren't going to suddenly say you don't have the money, or have four credit cards declined, then have to do a mechanic's lien to hopefully get paid. Or that you don't do a chargeback and dispute the charges with your credit card company. It makes zero sense for a dealer to try and run out the warranty.

As for the service manager being "nonchalant," did you want him to scream and panic or fix the problem? If you have an issue when you pick up the car, you stop right there and go right back. And this again is a dealer issue, not a Ford issue. That guy doesn't work for Ford, he works for whomever owns that franchised dealership. The most Ford can normally do is put some pressure on the dealer to do better, unless they have a huge pattern of doing this, so much that it risks giving Ford a bad name to thousands of people. If that happens then they might be able to sever the relationship and pull their name and product. No clue how that works though.

If you want something that is off road capable, then avoid the Jeep too, as it's even worse than the Broncos ever have been. Get a Toyota Forerunner.
Or if you just want a mall crawler, basically a poser off road vehicle... well get a Toyota anyway. The latest RAV4 is pretty nice. Still about the top for reliability, even though they are slipping like every company is. Or maybe a Mazda or Honda.
Mazdas seem to be pretty solid, without a lot of major issues.
Honda/Acura are also very solid vehicles. The Passport Trailsport looks really nice, and I was very tempted. The larger size, more storage, and greater towing capacity were tempting... but I also wanted something smaller to be more nimble on the narrower trails (not just actual off road, but like looging roads and dirt roads) in the area, plus the extra .4 in of height and the pseudo lockers tipped me in favor towards the BS with sasquatch... the price difference too. The Trailsport is about as much as the full siazed Bronco I was also thinking about.
Do not get a Land Rover. Those are over priced garbage. I know people who have had them in the shop almost as much as they've been able to drive them. My co-worker has had hers in the shop something like four times in the last 4 years, and it's been there for like a total of 11 months in those four trips.
Nissans are good values, but the CVT they use is weak and they don't admit to the problems. There is a rumor that there will be a body on frame Xterra making a comeback. That would be awesome.
The Genisis... well it's a nicer Hyundai and they have a lot of nice features included.

Recently started having some of the same issues described here. Clunking sounds when in parking lots and also starting to get a whining noise at night speeds. 50k miles. Anyone have any luck figuring this out? Please post some updates.

I had similar noises in my Badlands. Changed the RDU fluid, the noises went away.

So just want to provide an update. Rear differential needed to be rebuilt. The work was thankfully covered under the drivetrain warranty. Bronco spent 2 1/2 weeks at dealer shop but thankfully they provided a loaner and made the whole process easy. The cluncking and squeaking sounds at lower speeds was due to loose hardware in the front end.

Had the same issue, they have now replaced the RDU and the driver side front strut bearing... We shall see if this fixes it.

You can give them your VIN or not, that's your call. I'm just verifying they are officially from Ford. If you Direct Message them, they will be the only ones to see your VIN.

I hope you get your issue taken care of.

Thank you, I traded the Sport.

Great info on the dealers and how they work! Yeah I heard this dealer which is owned by Earnhardt here in AZ are terrible, anyhow, there was several things I didn't like about it, I just decided to trade it in. I did look at Toyotas, I used to have a Tacoma and loved it. I know about Land Rovers, that's why there's tons for sale cheap. I'm a woman, I don't do much off roading, if we do (we have properties up in the mountains) we use my husbands F-350. We do take both vehicles sometimes so I do need an AWD , I bought a Porche Macan, It is on a whole other level.

When I had a VW years ago, I found a great dealer that did good work at their shop, charged about the same as most independent shops and free loaners. When we bought out Subarus we went across the parking lot to the Subaru dealership owned by the same person. Great service for a year or so... then he retired I think and was bought by another large dealer. Everything tanked within a couple months, new service manager, new service writers, different techs, even most of the sales staff left. I was either lied to or the manager and service writer were incompetent idiots. Bad enough I actually wrote a letter to Subaru of America. Only one decent dealer or service center in the region, and it's pretty far. The other option is an independent shop that is fantastic, but also pretty damn far.

So far I've had good luck with the dealer I'm using. They weren't able to recreate the brake moaning when I took it in because it was too warm... but that IS a Ford issue. That is something that kills me. Bronco Sport since the beginning, Escapes even earlier, and they still can't figure out a fix.

Porches are nice. And great resale value. Like all European cars they are expensive to fix, both parts and labor. Mostly parts. I just can't get over the rear end. It looks like an Imprezza from five years ago to me.

Dealers do not get paid the same for warranty work as they would a paying customer. Manufactures have 2 different labor times one for regular repair time and one for warranty work. Warranty labor time is usually about 2/3 of regular time. For example a 3 hour water pump replacement at $150 an hour = $450 invoiced at regular time vs about $300 to a Manufacture plus the dealer does not get there parts markup either so they lose on both ends. The plus side to warranty work is a lot of repairs are for the same things on newer, low mile clean no rust vehicles so the techs can get pretty fast at some repairs.

Good to know. Thanks for the correction.

Makes sense why a dealer wouldn't want to do it then. Ford is only willing to pay a certain amount, while dealers will charge us the full $70-100+ hr shop rate and a higher markup on parts.

I bought the extended warranty on my 2022 for about $4000 and glad I did. I had the same trouble, dealership told me some sort of drain hose on the differential was faulty which let in water. I got the same grinding noise. They replace the differential which had to be done about a month after my regular warranty expired. Also I had problems with the parking brake which they had to fix. Those alone are the price of the extended warranty. I would recommend you purchase it.

I'm having the same issue with my 2021 Bronco Sport Badlands. In addition to the shudder, I get either get a clunk or a bunch of clunks when I am starting off. I'm at 83k. When I mentioned the clunk in a "the works" service, they said that its normal in the 4 wheel drive equiped vehicles. I should have been more persistant, I guess. Now it's getting worse. It's a shame, because I really like this little truck. I see that there are a lot of TSBs related to the RDU. Seems like a part quality or a installation issue. I'm taking it in for service, hopefully it's just a fluid replacement issue.

Hopefully it will. I had the exact same thing on my 2022 Badlands, changed the RDU fluid, noises went away. That was about 20,000 miles ago, still good.
