At 65mph, gave it gas and NO power!

Hi. I have a 2022 Bronco Sport Big Bend with 1000 miles. I was driving at about 65mph and wanted to pass someone so gave it gas and nothing happened. The gas pedal went to the floor and no acceleration.

I slowed somewhat to grasp at what had just happened but continued on, and in the next mile, it continued to happen so I pulled over. I turned off the vehicle and waited 5 minutes and then continued to my destination which was another 5 miles. It felt very sluggish, and I drove very conservatively because I didn't want to stall at the top of the Sunshine Skyway!!

I took the vehicle to my Ford dealership and I got the call this morning that the tech drove the vehicle and couldn't duplicate the problem. They want me to test-drive it with them. So what if it doesn't happen then? They will hand it back to me and expect me to drive it until I have a real issue and I'm stranded somewhere or worse?

Has anyone had any issues like this?

Mass air flow sensor maybe? It could be acting up. Seems like a very strange situation

It didn’t hold a code for the dealer… strange .. something made it go into limp mode .. I had 2018 power wagon that that happened to turned out to be the beginnings of many transmission replacements lol .. good luck

That really sucks... I hope you can pinpoint the cause soon. Never a good feeling to be driving a new vehicle and not have confidence in it. I find it "amazing" that in this day and age, dealerships can't connect to the computer and retrieve performance data to have an idea of what happened. "Old school" repairs had to rely on recreating the problem, today we drive rolling computers with sensors and data collection constantly happening.

Hope you find out something soon, not knowing is very frustrating.

If it didn't hold a code would that mean it's a mechanical failure, and not an electronically induced issue ?

Not necessarily. My brother's jeep had several sensors all fail around the same time; it caused it to loose power and shift at the wrong time. It threw codes, but it threw different codes each time, and sometimes it wouldn't throw any codes at all.

It doesn't sound like it went into limp mode though, did it? Did it not accelerate, or did it slow to 30 mph and that was your top speed? 65 mph isn't limp mode.

I have a code reader that gives me "pending codes", where there are issues, but it doesn't happen long enough to "throw" the code. What you describe does sound like a drive-by-wire, MAF, IAC or pedal sensor issue, throttle body (none of those specifically, but any of those can contribute to the vehicle not responding to the accelerator). I have two codes on my Ford (Super Duty) and they are for closed and full open throttle, while the truck drives fine, then goes into limp mode. I've had mechanics advised me the codes mean everything from the first sensor in the "tree" of diag to replacing the throttle body. My truck has done this since day one and I've replaced everything but the throttle body and accelerator position sensor. I live with it because the "expert" mechanics don't really know more than keep replacing parts until it stops doing it. It's only an issue on the interstate, when it goes into limp mode from 70 mph to 30 mph, which I don't drive often.

I couldn't agree more! If I press on the gas and nothing happens, why does the mechanic need me to personally recreate it? Just take it from there and start to narrow it down!

It did not go into limp mode. I was able to drive it at around 55mph--maybe it would have gone faster, but that was the speed limit in that section. But it was very "groggy". I could feel that something wasn't right.

Makes (more) sense then that it didn't have a code associated with it.

Did the bronco have a vibration or shutter when you tried to accelerate? I had this happen a couple of times on my 1.5L Ecoboost in my old 2017 Escape- both times in high work-load, high heat situations when I was near an oil change. However, my Escape was fine after cooling off a bit both times, once I stopped and restarted the engine it behaved completely normally. In both times this happened, the vehicle did not throw a code, nor was there a history of anything when I put a scanner on it.

You will know if the vehicle goes into "limp" mode- it won't go above about 40 miles per hour on a level road, or above a certain RPM, depending on the code for the engine. Doesn't quite sound like that's what happened here.

My only advice would be to try very hard to replicate the problem. I've never been an auto mechanic, but I turned wrenches on helicopters for a few years (and stayed at a Holiday Inn Express recently ;) Unfortunately for the mechanic, if they can't see anything wrong with the engine, there's not much to fix unless you want them to just throw random parts at it and probably waste your money.

Hope you get resolution on this soon!

Hi have you found the problem? I’m having a very similar issue with mine the dealer had it for two weeks and can’t get it to replicate the problem not throwing any codes and no history showing anything wrong. It’s so frustrating it’s happened to me four times now. I would appreciate any info. I also have what I call a transmission rattle. It feels like it’s stuck between gears.
Thank you

Hi there! I can look into your Bronco's concern on my end. To get started, could you please send a private message over with the name/location of your local Ford dealer and your Bronco's VIN?

Unfortunately, I have not found a solution for the problem. Fortunately, it has not done a complete repeat of the problem, but the jerkiness of the acceleration is driving me nuts! I feel like I'm driving a poorly maintained 10-year-old car with 150K miles on it. Did you find out anything from Ford after they requested your VIN (response below)?

Hi I didn’t send them the info on here but I did call Ford I’m not sure where it will go from there my dealer made a few suggestions can we private message here? I’m new to this forum so I’m not sure how it works.

I am having the same exact issue! The first time they said it was the turbo and replaced it under warranty (they kept it for over 2 months). The same day I got it back, same issue… happened randomly… hit gas to floor and nothing. Took it back. Kept it for 2 weeks and said nothing was wrong. Next day aftwr getting it back, did the same thing… as I was turning left into oncoming traffic. Was almost t-boned. Took it back and I get a call today saying that they have no idea what’s wrong. Where do we go from here?! This is so dangerous!!

This is a MAJOR safety issue and you should keep working with the dealer for a resolution - even if it includes a Lemon Law claim.

good luck!

Yes, I agree!!! It was super scary and it’s only a matter of time before an accident occurs.
