Winter driving in a Badlands

I can't catch a break.

Jan 12, 2024

For the first time since owning my Bronco, we are finally getting a real snowstorm here in Omaha.

Everything is cancelled, the neighborhoods are a mess, and there is a 3 foot snow drift in my driveway.

Had to run an errand, and it was the time of my life. I have never enjoyed driving is snow as much as today. Put the bronco in 4 high and let it eat snow. I’m sad that it was a short errand close by. I want to go again and rip-up some snow banks!

Hey @Laura, I know, can't be a good thing if I'm posting right? Anyways, if you ever talk/see this Dan Schaffer guy who you say wrote a very good article about driving in snow, and did work on the Bronco as an engineer....... Can you ask him why the HELL did Ford NOT put heating elements in the headlights? The front end is vertical, the snow sticks to those things quite easily, causing you to have to stop every few minutes just to clear them. Granted NJ hasn't had snow in 2 years, but last time we did, I remember what a PIA it was dealing with that.

Of course it doesn't matter much now as I have the Morimoto headlights (also not heated), so I can't bitch at Ford anymore. But what a stupid design!

Ya I have to second this.. Saturday night I had to use the A-pillar lights cause A-holes in cars were riding my @ss and it was not safe to pull over and clear the head lights, then of course I was constantly getting high beamed by on coming cars

I haven’t had any issue with the headlights. It’s been -12 in Omaha and my Bronco has been super reliable and warm. I’m so stoked how well it has handled.

My daughter’s Ford Focus? Not so much. Had to replace her battery today in the brutal cold and wind. Still had the original 2018 Ford OEM battery, so I guess 5 years was the expected run.

I've found that when the temps are around the freezing and the snow is very wet, that is when you have issues with the headlights. The snow sticks right to them and it isn't long before you have to stop and clear them.
My drive home on Saturday night, after playing in the snow all day, took 3 hours and I didn't have to stop once. It was blowing and snowing with whiteout conditions but the temps were well below freezing.

Pics & video please so we can all live vicariously through your antics!

Unfortunately they didn't get the snow they were supposed to get until Sunday so I missed out by 1 day. I didn't get any video but did a few pictures. The scenery was beautiful and it's always a good day when you can get off the beaten path. The ground underneath wasn't frozen yet so things were a little more muddy than we had hoped.
We had a mixture of Broncos and Jeeps.

I'm also here TD in the Omaha metro area and I had to work Friday morning and it was a BEAST in the snow. At one point I was "stuck" but got out of the 3' drifts after a little work. I have had a pickup my whole life until the bronco and it is by far the best vehicle I have ever driven in the snow. The extra clearance really helps compared to the wife's explorer. My only issue with bronco so far is with this cold weather I have a small gap somewhere and with the wind it sounds like I have a birds nest in the driver side corner lol.

Is one of your windows stuck? My rear passenger window needs to be recalibrated since it’s not dropping or raising when the door is open. Once you get in your Bronco, roll the windows down and back up and see if that fixes one.

This happens to be every time it gets cold. The frameless windows are not my favorite.

That's a great question. He did work on the 4x4 systems, I believe. I know it's something a lot of us deal with and would be curious as to why Ford didn't.
I think that a lot of newer vehicles have the same issue. All plastics and LED. No heat emitted. I know mine are covered with PPF. I wonder if it helps at all with the snow issue? I will be washing Nag this afternoon and I am gonna apply RainX. Maybe I will hit the lenses also.

Yea, it's up but I think I need to have the roof realigned. My garage is heated and its right out the gate on a main road with higher winds was never an issue with outside temps above 0. I agree the frameless windows are not my favorite. I will still give it a try to roll windows down and backup to see what happens.

Errands are your secret weapon in a storm Owner since Dec ‘21. Work part time in Colorado mountains and 6G is magic. Just went through your storm in Nebraska. It stalked me 3 times. Lol
A full plains blizzard.
Bronco loves it.

Here are some Bronco life tips.
Have you checked to see if you have enough wiper fluid? What about the neighbors? Relatives Need milk? Butter?
Do you have kids? If not, do your neighbors? Somebody needs an errand run.
Limit travel to only one errand per trip.
This is what we do.
Run.Every.Errand!
Welcome to the 6Glife!
Enjoy!

I really like your wheel choice, what are they?

Thank you Dean! So glad you made the trek up to Michigan in the snow storm. Always great chatting with you and of course snow-wheeling! Thanks for taking pictures. I wish I would have taken more :(
