Should I Worry 'bout Engine Oil Overfill?

I used to change my truck's engine oil/filter/tranny & dif lube and now in my 'senior' years, treated myself to Ford's service contract with our new Bronco. After the dealer's 1st oil change, I'm not sure I like this approach. Maybe I'm just anal, but this doesn't seem right!!

Our Bronco's dip stick says it's a quart high??##@@!!

Sure, I assume these fancy new engines drain oil more slowly than simpler times. Yeah, I know Ford service technicians get-off on beating their jobs' time standards. Also, I'm not SAE certified, but knew overfilling my diesel was very bad thing and am only assuming it's not great for these gasoline turbos.

Is this typical of Bronco/EcoBoost oil changes? Should I pull a quart out? What do ya think?

Cheers

Update - Found a good article on NAPA's site here. Overfill is definitely NOT a good thing - Creates frothy oil.

However, mine was a cold engine dipstick check and they suggest a warm engine, 15min after shutdown. So, this may not be overfill after all. I'll re-check tomorrow and call dealer service guy if it's still reads too high warm...

I wonder if this is this a result of the incorrect dipstick issue the 2.7 had. That is way over filled and bad for the engine. Take it back to the dealership for correction.

It depends how much oil is in there and what dipstick you have. Ford has stated many times that seven quarts will due no harm. Remember, seven is what they first published in the Bronco manual.

Yeah, good points! I hadn't heard 'bout that potential dipstick problem. The dealer's RO says 6 quarts used in change. We're trading call backs this morning.

Follow up - I re-checked oil level after 6 mile drive this morning. Our 'H' labeled dipstick, was ~1/8th high immediately after shout down, and about 1/2" high after settling 20min. Both high so, I'm off to the dealership.

My dealership service guys were very helpful. They're busy as is always the case, but took our Bronco into a service bay right away. They listened to my concerns, reviewed my dipstick photos, pulled their RO from my August 8 oil change service.

They re-checked the oil level, dipstick showed 1/8th high, they pulled an oil sample whiched looked to be in excellent condition, no indication of contamination nor froth. I mentioned the dipstick issue describer in Broncofly's BN june-'22 thread.

They search my VIN number for recalls: None (well, only that seatbelt nonsense). Searched for dipstick related TSB: None.

Finally, the service mgr said this dipstick length thing was the only explanation he had, as he was confident our Bronco's current oil level correct and the oil was almost like new.

For giggles, I visited Parts asked for a new dipstick. They looked up our VIN (Our Bronco's Blend date is March 21, 2023) and pulled MB3Z6750-C. This dipstick had the same 'H' label as the dipstick in oiur Bronco. They didn't have a MB3Z6750-F Broncofly mentioned as the shorter version.

I'm now comfortable that our Bronco's oil level is fine. This dipstick confusion is annoying though. Think I'll break-out a small metal file and make some notchs for my own reference. The service guys agreed that simple solution worked for them too..

This is the one my Ford dealer ordered for free. It was listed as the correct 2.7 Bronco dipstick for many months. Shows perfectly full with seven quarts. That’s what I run…

Good catch! As an interesting, somewhat related side note, my Scout (not a bronco...) actually says in the manual to add an extra quart if driving consistently at highway speeds. The idea is at higher rpms, the pump could potentially cavitate while all the oil is running through the engine and not sitting in the oil pan, ready to be sucked into the pump... the added oil won't damage seals if highway rpms are maintained. It'll just leak out when parked I guess...
