Actually Khris Khristofferson wrote the song. Johnny introduced it on his show. Great friends, launched Chris into stardom, not that he was not a great song writer ( Me and Bobbie Mcgee) among others. "Wishin Lord that I was stoned" lyric was nixed by the censors. Johnny sang it anyway, Not a whole lot they could do about it in the day of live TV when he sang those lyrics anyway, except not renew the #1 show on television because he wanted creative control over the show. According to legend, when he fist sang those lyrics, he looked up at Kris (seated next to June) as he did it...
