The full quote from Helmuth von Moltke the Elder is "No plan of operations extends with certainty beyond the first encounter with the enemy's main strength." This is far more subtle and illuminating than the common version, which implies that plans are no good once you start using them. He also said, "strategy is a system of expedients." Thanks! I'll share that with my son. Incidentally, he's a logistics officer, and apparently a very good one. "It always takes us two hours to get these buses boarded and on their way, and you did it in fifteen minutes?" (Or so they say)
