Here is how Toyoto did Port Fuel Direct Injection on 4 cylinders:

Toyota Direct Injection? Port Injection? Why Not Both?
Port fuel injection and direct fuel injection systems each have their advantages and disadvantages.Toyota calls this system the D-4S or Dynamic Force Engine

The direct fuel injectors are just like any other direct fuel injection system. And, the port fuel injectors are not there to clean the intake valves; these injectors work to provide fuel to the engine. Both sets of injectors work together for the best possible fuel mixture in the cylinder.

Port fuel injection can offer better vaporization under certain conditions.

Toyota uses its blended approach of port and direct fuel injection to give the best possible performance, emissions and economy.

D-4S Engines The latest vehicle to get it is the four-cylinder used in the 2017 Camry. The best way to spot one of these engines is to look for port fuel injectors and a high-pressure fuel pump.

How It Works
According to Toyota, during low-to-medium engine loads, both direct-type and port-type fuel injection are used together, or one of them is used to create homogeneous mixed air and fuel, thus contributing to stable combustion processes.

During high engine load ranges, only the direct-type fuel injection is used to cool down the intake air with the chilling effect of vapors in the fuel, which is injected into the cylinder, improving charge efficiency and anti-knock properties. Under some conditions, the intake valves open to allow the homogeneous air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber, and fuel is injected during the first half of the intake stroke.

During a cold start, the system times the opening of the port and direct fuel injector to decrease emissions and achieve stratified combustion. Immediately after a cold engine start and during the exhaust stroke, fuel is injected into the intake port from the fuel injector assembly (for port injection). Fuel is also injected from the direct fuel injector near the end of the compression stroke. This results in an air-fuel mixture that is stratified, and the area near the spark plug is richer than the rest of the air/fuel mixture. This process allows a retarded ignition timing to be used, raising the exhaust gas temperature. The increased exhaust gas temperatures promote rapid warmup of the catalysts and improve exhaust emission performance.

It is impossible to detect where the changeover from port to direct injection occurs. The only way to see the different fuel injection operations is with a scan tool.

The ECM controls the fuel pump and calculates low-pressure fuel demand based on vehicle state and the signals sent from various sensors and outputs signals. Three-phase Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control is used for the fuel pump control ECU.

Both injector sets use the same fuel pump in the tank to provide fuel pressure to the fuel rail for the port fuel injectors and the high-pressure fuel pump on the engine. The pump should produce 51 to 73 psi while running and five minutes after the engine has turned off. If the pump is not working, both systems will not work.

The high-pressure fuel pump can generate 435 to 725 psi.
The system offers the best of both worlds while avoiding carbon buildup on the intake valves. Other manufacturers, including Audi and even Ford, are adopting the Toyota D-4S dual-injection system. As the costs of the components decrease, look for these types of systems on even more engine applications.

Since Ford is using this system on 2024 Mustang 2.3L ,when will Bronco have Port Fuel Direct Injection to help with carbon issurs?

Here is a post from the baby bronco site:
"Just my 2 cents, I have an oil separator on my F150 3.5 ecoboost. With that said it does not have the dual injection system. That was one of the reasons I picked the 1.5 because it does. Using a top tier fuel should solve any carbon build up problems on the intake valves. Save your money. 2.0 EB did not adopt the dual injection system"

Sound like hit and miss with Blue Oval!

The 8 years if you look and read your warrantee does not cover internal engine parts on emissions. Only if your Bronco fails inspection. Co2 what do you think the C means Carbon. Ford will refuse to warrantee for 8 years other than cat controls . Eight years is normal driving to hit 100,000 miles and Ford's engineer know it,remember how Ford did not treat sheet metal and they we forced to zinc coat now.

If other Eco Boost had dual injection systems, like the baby why did the use Mexico part contents. It all about being cheap. The Bronco Sport was a better engine just could not handle heavy body.

Hi guys. Having has four Mercedes Benz here is how they developed CDI to help avoid carbon in the intake values:
"Correct positioning of the spark plugs was a challenge requiring sophisticated flow calculations and tests. To ensure that the ignition spark is able to jump rapidly and reliably, the spark plug must reach the cloud of fuel/air mixture but must not be in direct contact with the liquid fuel, otherwise it will gradually carbonize.

In order to meet both requirements, the piezo-injector of the CGI engine extends into the centre of the combustion chamber. It has therefore been moved roughly to the position where the spark plug is located in a conventional port-injection engine; the spark plug has been repositioned closer to the exhaust valves, where it can reach the ignitable mixture at the turbulent edges of the cone-shaped spray. A cross-flow cooling system in the cylinder head ensures that the spark plugs and injectors always operate in the most favorable temperature range." Here is another article for you review on the good, bad and ugly carbonization on my eco boost 2.3L and combustion chart:
DI was simply engineered for more power in a small engine, then the engineers had ti meet EPA standards and test, but some of our member dont like rules and regulations, remember "Tread Lightly" when you are off road, other creatures have their home there!

Isn't the internet great. Someone said Al Gore invented it?
Meet Al real smart guy he sign my book and what he wrote about Global warming is coming true. Dont want to live in gulf states when summer water temperature goes to 90°. Well back to saving the planet and destroying our carbon maker Eco Boost 2.3L.
More info from India:
"Direct injection methods:
There are two ways of direct injection 1) direct injection of liquid fuel and 2) direct injection of premixture injection.( the baby got the better one-port) Direct injection of liquid fuel: it is a high pressure fuel injection system in which liquid fuel is directly
injected into the engine cylinder. The fuel injection pressure should be sufficiently higher than cylinder pressure in the range of 4Mpa- 15Mpa which is sufficient to produce well atomize spray.

Direct injection of air fuel premixture:
It is a low pressure injection system in which mixture is formed outside the cylinder by injecting fuel (Pressure range 0 .6 Mpa) in the part of air (Pressure 0.55 MPa). The premixture is transformed into combustion chamber by mechanical valve with mechanical control or by solenoid with electronic control. Short duration needed for the
complete mixture formation diluting premixture in the engine cylinder results complete combustion and less emissions. [5, 6, 7]."

This article hits the nail on the head, those Indians ( not cowboy kind that we killed) got it right or did they:

2. Novel approaches towards GDI from PFI
Mixture formation strategies make difference between PFI and GDI engine.

In PFI (port) engine fuel injected on the back of inlet valve when the valve is in closed position. Liquid film formation on the back of the inlet valve and fuel wall wetting in the intake port are the major problems in the PFI engine which Results in the disadvantages like metering error, fuel delivery delay. The time lag between fuel injection and induction into the cylinder may cause misfire and significant increase in UBHC. Most of the problems ( added:except carbon build up on backside of intake values) associated with PFI are overcome in GDI by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder; it avoids the wall wetting in the port, reduction in the fuel transport time, more accurate control over fuel quantity entering into the cylinder and offer potential for leaner combustion and low
emissions. The better atomization of fuel entering into the cylinder due to high fuel injection pressure increases vaporization rate and hence overcome cold start problems this can be explained by comparing the quantity of the fuel to start GDI and PFI engine [8, 20]. Other advantages of the GDI are the fuel cut-off in deceleration and the
cooling of the inducted charge. The evaporation of the fuel droplets cools the air and this allows higher compression ratios and lowers the octane requirement of fuels, and, in addition, if the injection occurs during the induction event"

So what about both low pressure PFI combined with DFI ? well lets see.

Disadvantages of Direct Fuel Injection

Injectors will wear out quickly because they’re continuously being utilized.
Using a high-pressure pump to supply high-pressure gas to the Injectors will cause it to malfunction over time.
Too much air in the fuel mixture might prevent the engine from starting.
Valve and piston difficulties can be caused by carbon buildup over the intake valve due to the lack of gasoline passage through it, leading to a host of issues.
More complex system.
Poor vaporization at high RPMs.

dual injection system is a successful development of the injection system that tries to combine the advantages of both systems but at the same time eliminate all the drawbacks.

For this reason, more and more automakers are implementing dual fuel injection systems in their newly produced engines.

What do you think of this system? Do you think that dual fuel injection will be the future of fuel injectors and will replace both direct and port systems?

For full article and pictures see,
https://engineerine.com/port-vs-dir...l injection system uses a combination of both.

I guess we beat this horse to death. Call CSC and ask them why your engine light went on at 100,000 miles. That dam carbon crap up your intake values. Dont trust what Indians wrote on GDI!

Here is my proof on why a Ford Dealer can charge a AMG battery right. Went in 14.v came out 12.43 in one hour. Undercharging will damage battery. Now my start stop is disabled. Ant American Great, a dealer doesnt know that at 75% stage of charge the start stop is turn off by BECM. Low software priority set at factory to 70%. 😣😣😣😣😣😣
