Way back in 2005 I built a teardrop trailer and drug that thing all over western states in 4 years, until it just wasn’t feasible to fit the Four of us in it. So I parked it. One day in 2009 during a severe drought one of our oak trees fell on the trailer. The tree did only minor damage invisible cracks in the Varnish allowing water to penetrate and damage the plywood. Now that my boys are teens and I learned of these RTT they can sleep in. I have started to rebuild the teardrop as an off-road Boreas look-alike. I will be building the RTT and the roof rack that will go on the teardrop. 40FB4B64-C1D4-4C68-A318-2262E8F1294C.jpegF59965B9-4DE6-4185-9534-01C3031A6ABE.jpeg
this was what it looked like when I first finished it. Extra points if you can name the location of the first picture.

and this is what it looked like after years of neglect.CE7886CA-AE50-47E8-84ED-82710CC9F7E1.jpeg
And this is what it looks like now.
I will update this thread as I make progress. I am planning to have this completed before my Everglades gets here. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Ok got a few coats of paint on the solar water heater, mounted it up and tested. With just 12 psi I can spray water about 12 yards. Holds pressure with no leaks. Overall I am pretty happy. I’m in the process of building a detachable countertop with a sink. Here are a few pictures. The mounting are some large stainless steel pipe clamps that I found. I do not plan to travel with water in the tank I will fill it when we get to camp.
Nice set up. I calculate about 17 gallons?

Thanks, I read somewhere that it is about .65 gallons per foot for 4” pvc so I figure it’s about 7 gallons. But haven’t filled it all the way yet. My tests were done with about 4.5 gallons.

I used 6" PVC (hard to tell the diameter from the pics) and about 12 feet of pipe.

Oh wow 6” pipe. I could not get 6” schedule 40. I could only find it in ABS I could not find all the fitting at the local HWS. So 4” it is. I reconfigured the mounting so it slopes down to the spigot more and I was able to empty another 1/2 gallon out of the system. Also I found that with the heat it did create a few psi of pressure on its own.

Finished the removable countertop and sink. Yes I am using an old tripod for a support. It works well and is fully adjustable. And folds up nicely.

Ok I decided to build the 270 batwing awning. I am building it out of 1/2 EMT conduit, a few 5"x7" purlin clips, some 5/8" washers, some 1/2" steel square tubing and a 20'x10' waterproof pergola cover. when opened it will be 13' x10' folded it will be 4" x 5" x8' long. it will be a self supporting awning that will take about 20-30 seconds to deploy, I hope.

Yeah I don't do it enough and I am not used to the wire feed (I like stick welding) so my welds are a little janky. I have an adjustable hood and I found that if I set it to Nine I can actually see what I am welding, my welds improved greatly. I am in a bit of a rush so we can use it the end of the month made some bonehead mistakes. like welding the two ends 180 degrees off, so I cut the end off added a section of 5/8 rod in the tube flipped it and welded it back. so I will probably end up re building the arms completely later.

Yeah that is bad stuff. when I weld that I do it right by the door and run my shop fan.

Did some test fitting and some updates as the wife wants it mounted to the passenger side. Mostly just flipping the frame and the third arm over so I have to drill a few holes for my extension stubs and poles if needed. Got to do a little surgery on my solar water heater to move the spigot to the other side.
FYI these are not Christmas lights they are Fiesta lights. we took down the Christmas lights months ago.

Did another test fit today and noticed there is a tad bit more wiggle than I would like. I thought it was the angles just needing some gussets but the problem really lies with the cross arms. That unistrut has a lot of deflection, not so much when folded up, but when deployed even without the canvas it wiggles.I will add some gussets for good measure on the angles. So I am thinking I could just get some 1-1/4” square tube and use that as cross bars and see if that helps. I have some 2” but that is way too big. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

I rebuilt the cross bars using 1-1/2” sq tube. I added gussets to the angle brackets and a support to the front. This thing is solid now. Did some fabric work as well hopefully tomorrow is not too windy to do some test fitting and hopefully finish this thing.

Got the water heater rearranged and mounted. But I don’t like having the extra couplers way too many potential leak points. so I am just going to rebuild the thing. Got the awning structure all painted up and tested the canvas a few more times. Sorry no pictures of that yet.

The awning is functional. The flap at the end is extra material that should be cut off but we added a grommet and just going to add a tarp pole and guy it, so we can keep that extra 2 sqft. Now I just need to get an awning cover. The first picture is the material just draped over. And if we ever need wind all I have to do is test fit the fabric and here comes the wind.
