On Sunday I had my Apple car play on….displaying Google maps as I drive… awesome graphics….. really cool!!!

Anyway, I left my phone on the charging pad on the console as I drove expecting it to charge… after driving back from the beach 50 plus miles … Car play shut down….
Next my wife grabbed the phone… the Apple I-phone 11 was exceedingly HOT and shut off….the phone actually said “ will not be operational until cooled down”!!! We were without the use of my phone for 1/2 hour.

Insult to injury after the phone cooled it was at a 46% charge….

On Monday I checked in with another Bronco owner…. Sure enough coming back from Santa Barbara ( the same day) his phone charger overheated his phone and it shut off…

After speaking to my friend, I dropped by our dealership to check if their were any resolutions by Ford to address this issue…. No … nothing …
So I asked if they could formally move this issue forward…. They refused and said it was up to me…
🤬😡 (however this to be expected by my dealership)

On a side issue… their dealership service person said it was OK to run your coolant and Trans temp to 250F…. That was Ok…
This should tell you something about this dealership.

Called Ford Yesterday and formally lodged a complaint( about the charger issue and the poorly programmed Active Grill Shutter's).

Hopefully… the Bronco Nation can spread the word about the lux charging pad (overheating your phone)

iPhone 12 Pro, and I gave up trying to use the wireless charger after the first couple of days (only had my WT for a couple weeks). I'm using CarPlay all time and it seems that the wireless connection uses a lot of power and likely heats the phone up all on its own and then adding the wireless charging to it, it just stopped charging.

I'm just using the usb charger once CarPlay connects b/c I don't feel like the USB connection for CarPlay is that great either.

I think it is mostly the processing power that Apple is making the phone do to run the wireless CarPlay, b/c even using the plug I'll get the notification on my phone from time to time that charging is paused due to the phone being too hot.

I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and I have the same over heating issue on the wireless charger. I run Car Play all the time, so I'm not sure if it would be any different otherwise. What I have noticed is if I run Car Play without wireless charging either without the phone plugged in or with the phone plugged into the USB charging port, everything is fine in terms of heat. Note that I use a wireless charging pad to charge my phone overnight, and while the problem isn't as significant as in my Bronco, I have noticed that the phone is "warm" in the morning when I take it off the charging pad.

UPDATE - I got a new phone (Google Pixel 7) and it does not overheat or have any issues while charging on the wireless pad or plugged in. I thought maybe it was related to the vehicle or something but it looks like it may be phone specific...and not even model type, just some phones being asses and overheating for whatever reason.

I have a Samsung S-9. I've had issues with my charger overheating the phone also. Seems to be an inherent problem with this "dime store" charger. It appears that Ford cut corners on the charger along with some of the other quality control issues that have been plaguing Ford for some time now. How about it Ford? Let's step up and take care of this charging issue in the Bronco.

Just want to chime in here - I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, and the same thing happens in our Tesla's wireless charger (though it doesn't shut the phone down - it just gets hot as balls and the phone will stop charging to cool it down). This is a common problem with Qi chargers in cars, from what I've seen. Hope that makes everyone feel a little better.

Have you guys and gals tested charging without the case? I don't know the exacts, but the heat is (apparently) the result of charging inefficiency present in through-the-air charging. It can happen even when you are using poorly produced wall chargers.

I don't use a case and while there's some warmth after my iPhone 11 (or 12) has been on the slab, it's not excessively hot, and it does take a charge.

hmmm ... there's an idea, I'll have to try that. If that works, I wonder if adding one of those magsafe rings to the case, or getting a magsafe case would help? Gonna have to play with it and see...

I got a new ‘22 F250 last December and it had wireless charging too. I rarely used it because the phone would slide around too much and not make a clean connection to the charger. Wireless CarPlay will eat up the battery. I used it for short trips but I kept a cable in the truck for charging the phone. Never had an issue with overheating on the F250.

I have pixel 6 pro, lux package and manual transmission, so it has the wireless charging pad in the slot vs the flat pad of the automatic. I had the same issue with the charger as several here...minimal if any charging performance and hot hot hot phone. I always put the phone in the slot with the top of the phone facing the driver's seat.

One day a couple weeks ago, I accidentally put my phone in the slot with the top of the phone facing the passenger seat. After about an hour drive I pulled my phone out of the slot, and lo and behold, no particular heat and a sizeable charge up!!!! Since then, I've been putting my phone in that direction, and I get the same good performance from the charging pad! I have no idea why it makes a difference, but for the people having the issue, maybe try flipping the direction you put your phone on the pad or where on the charger you place it?

Interesting, I have an I-phone with the stick shift and have always put the top of the phone pointing towards me. I’ve never had much trouble with heat or not charging. Maybe I’ll try it the other way on the way home and see if it makes a difference.
