Good news for overlanders. Long range fuel tanks are coming

I’ve been griping about the size of the gas tank since before I got my 2dr. I have to fill up every day or every other day to avoid risking running out on the highway, with a 200-240 mile range on average.

Adventure Motors in the Kansas City area gave me a quote for a Goose Gear seat delete install, because quite frankly I don’t have the time to do any platform fab/install myself. I asked about jerry can mount solutions or aux tank solutions, and they let me know that Long Range America is developing tanks for both the 2 and 4 door Broncos! This is a big deal, because their tanks claim to increase fuel capacity by about 50% on their current models. Their tanks seem to run in the low $2000s, so I’ll expect low to mid $3000s after installation. Super excited for this, because it’ll be a life changer for me!! https://longrangeamerica.com/shop-tanks/

You know things have gone to shit when a gas tank cost 3K . Man I sure glad I’m old. Things have gone completely off the rails.

I expect to see more options in the near future. There's a lot of stuff we wanted a year ago that wasn't available then but is now. The market will catch up. The Jeep aftermarket is almost endless if we could half of what they got it would be great.

Jeep tanks in the OP link are also $2k+.

I don't see Bronco tanks being any cheaper than that.

Why the low MPG ? I’m a 2 door and get 19-20MPG

You gotta do allot of highway or 50mph driving. I can get decent mileage over distance but crap around town.

I drive around town (Las Vegas) all the time and I'm still getting 19+ mpg in my 2-door.

I was thinking of a long range tank before I got my Bronco but then I put 18,000 miles on it this summer pulling a 1,500 lb camper while traveling for work and never once did I wish I had more capacity. I'm averaging a little over 18 mpg over 78 tanks of gas which is a range of 300(ish) miles per tank. Now I cannot imagine any scenario in the lower 48 where I'm willing to pay $2,000 or more for a larger gas tank.

That’s what I’m seeing about 15, maybe less.

I think a jerry can (or two or three) is a much more sensible solution, dollar-wise. I notice there's more than a few people on the boards with deep pockets--good for them. I can afford some quality accessories, but none of them are cosmetic and all of them I either expect to use--or want in working order in case I need them.

A thought to consider: many gas pumps will shut you down at 30 gallons and/or $100. Sure, you can always re-start, maybe with another credit card, but it is a nuisance.

I’ll probably go with the rotopax 2 x 2 Gal. 4 Gal will get 40 miles even at 10 Mpg. Probably enough for anything most will go through off-road.

Now for the convenience of not having to refill as often on long distance travel the extra tank would be nice for not having to monkey with any cans.

Had my 2 door up on the lift over the weekend while changing the oil and rotating the tires, took a good look at the stock tank while I was under there - the tank uses up almost all the available room on the passenger side between the rear driveshaft and the frame rail, goes all the way back and almost touches the rear axle. But, there's a lot of empty unused space in front of and above the rear differential. I know there has to be room for the suspension to compress, but even allowing for that, there's quite a bit of unused space under the rear seat area that they could have fit a couple more gallons of fuel tank space into.

And I was shocked at how tiny the diameter of the rear driveshaft is at the splines - I swear I've seen steering shafts bigger than that. No wonder Ford limits engine torque in 1st and 2nd gears - if the rear tires hooked up at WOT at launch, that thing would twist like a noodle.

I just recently returned from a 19 state, 7000 mile trip in my gas motorhome (averaging 11 mpg). It has a 55 gallon tank. I never encountered a 30 gallon limit or any limit fueling during my entire trip.

You must be spooling up that turbo a lot? I have the tracker for insurance so I save the get up and go for the acceleration lane and getting just over 19 mpg, mostly around town.

Depends on where you get gas. Local stations in the northeast generally stop at $100. Stations on the turnpikes/thruways may not stop early.

That's not the gas station shutting off your pump at $100, it's the credit card you're using. Some credit cards have a $100 limit on gas purchases as a security measure.

I’ve used the same card at different stations on a trip. It seemed to be pump dependent. Some pumps in Canada allowed me to select a purchase limit up to a max amount.
