Ford Performance Calibration Engine Reliability

Hope you get the answers you're looking for! I don't have figures for you, but anecdotally, I know a Ford Senior Master and have talked with Ford engineers with the tune on their 2.3L, so their votes of confidence are nice to hear about.

And unrelated to you, but some discussion about the 2.3L has been happening here in the forums lately.

What I am curious for is to hear from people on the reliability of their engine with the tune, or anecedotes on higher than normal failure rates with the Ford Performance Calibration.

I'm making an assumption that since Ford developed it that the reliability of parts isn't that much further off than a non-calibrated engine. I'm looking to install the 2026 tune on my 2026 2.3l Badlands, but looking to gather as much info as possible. I can shoulder the risks, but looking to see what the risks are with people who have long term use with the Calibration.

The Ford performance tune was not designed by Ford but by Procal.... and approved and sold by Ford. It is a pretty mild tune. There are some really wild tunes available out there.

Just my experience teaching mechanical design at the post secondary level, I have found that as you increase pressure on mechanical parts you typically increase wear and failure. I tend to stay away from the more radical tunes because I would like to keep my Bronco for a long time.... (death do us part and all that...LOL)

I have the Ford Performance (procal) tune on my Bronco 2.7. I have had the bronco for 3 years and the tune for about 2 years. Yes it increases the internal pressures slightly so the horsepower and torque improvements are not dramatic. They are there and you can "feel" them but they are not huge. For me the big advantage has been the transmission shift points. (I have the 10 speed). They feel more natural and fluid. Not perfect by any means but improved.

I have not experienced any negative side effects but I also do not put a lot of mileage on my Bronco... I have had it 3 years and I just crossed 15k...

I've only had mine installed for a few weeks on my 2023 Badlands 2.3L so take what I say with a grain of salt as I have zero long term experience with it but....

It does come with a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty so Ford Performance backs it up.

In my limited time with the tune, I have been very happy with the added performance it provides.

I run 91 octane in my Bronco and I have Boostane Professional Octane Booster for times when I am out 4 wheeling and camping where the smaller cities might only have 87 or 89 octane.

I did a lot of research into octane boosters and most of the ones you can get at gas stations and auto parts stores are snake oil.. Boostane appears to be, based on my research at least, legit...

I have the 2.7, Ford tune. Its been on for 18k+ Miles, no issues yet. I run 93 pump gas as it says too.

honestly, I dont think I have heard of any issues thus far. While it does have performance and transmission gains. Its not some unwildly tune.. id think you'd be happy with it, and safe.

first and foremost... when buying a new vehicle, get to know your dealer, salesman, and parts and service dept. See if they are there to help you... or if turn their back once the deal sheet is signed. And dont be a stranger. Stop by when things are good.. chit chat... make.friends... you'll be surprised what gets taken care of when your backs against a wall.

Correct. The 3 / 36 starts on the date the vehicle was originally put into service and not when the tune was flashed.

91 is what they recommend but 93 is preferred to get the maximum benefits..

I was told directly by Ford Performance that you can run 89 or even 87 for a limited time but it's not recommended for any prolonged use because it will pull timing to protect the engine. You can use those lower octane #'s in a pinch if needed but don't do it often or frequently..
