Don’t be worried about the current 0-60 tests and drag races

Howdy friends!

I’ve noticed some people being down in the dumps about all of these Broncos getting totally wrecked in 0-60 times and unofficial drag races. I’m not going to say that these outlets are doing this on purpose, but there have yet to be any sort of apples to apples comparisons… until today that I’ve found. I’ll just start off with this: behind the wheel in my experience, Bronco is pretty dang quick and 99% of people are going to be totally happy. Now, why are the numbers we’ve seen not so good so far relative to the wrangler? Gearing, tire size, fuel octane, modes, traction control, elevation, and driver skill all make a huge difference. As soon as you compare Wrangler vs Bronco when controlling for those variables, I think Bronco is going to absolutely shine. And I believe that thanks to this video:
Stangmode obviously knows what he is doing behind the wheel, and while we don’t have a 0-60 time from him, we did get a 1/4 mile time: 15.29. His 2.3, 32” tire, 3.73 gearing Big Bend is almost identical to a 2.0 Sahara Wrangler in specs… and the Motor Trend 1/4 mile time for that Wrangler? 15.3 seconds. So when comparing like for like, the 2.3 Bronco is going to compare very favorably to the 2.0 wrangler. (Which I should say, I was pleasantly surprised when I drove a 2.0 Wrangler. It’s a solid powerplant.) And then of course, adding the 2.7 with its 30 additional horsepower and 90 extra foot pounds is going to give it a leg up over the 2.0 wrangler. When I saw TFL posting 10 second 0-60 times for a Wildtrak I knew I had to address this, that is barely faster than my 3.8 Wrangler with 205 horsepower. I’m not sure what they are doing wrong but it must be several things to get the Bronco to be that slow.

I'm not buying one to be quick off the line. I want it to be able to pull its weight+a trailer.

They did it in Denver and I believe it was in normal mode. They ran it against a 4XE which was running on electric but I think they mentioned that it was on electric near the end of the vehicle. Gas engines are choked down at the elevation in Denver.

Need to compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. ;)

If I wanted speed, I could of spent an extra $8k on a GT Convertible with PP and 402 or whatever it is

If I need more speed, DP/FMIC/Drop in Filter/Tune

My concern is it causing me to get killed because it can't get through an intersection. I don't trust ford vehicles other than the mustang, etc. to do that anymore. We sold our 2.0 Fusion because it felt like my 96 Escort from a dig and we almost got ran into multiple times. If i can figure out a way to at least make sure it gets from 0-20 quickly, it's all i want. It can fall on its face after 45 for all i care, but i thought all the torque and gearing would give me some low end/low speed grunt. Guess not?

I mean it’s still a big lumbering vehicle at the end of the day. As some people have noticed, there is definitely some sort of detuning in 1st gear to protect the power train, but it’s not something where I would consider it “dangerous.” My 3.8 JK on stock gears and 33’s is getting close to that point but the Bronco is significantly better.

Thats why I bought a Focus, better power to weight ratio than the 243 hp Fusion and I liked the Fusion big disappointment.
The big issue I have is every talks about how much power these turbo motors have but they don't seem to have the power people claim.

... Gas engines are choked down at the elevation in Denver.

Gas engines might be "choked down" at elevation, but all gas engines are, otherwise, equally. What is different is "tubro'd" gas engines have an advantage at elevation because they force air, or increase pressure. The turbo'd Bronco should have an advantage over a naturally aspirated gas engine. The Bronco didn't walk away from the lower-hp Toyota FJ (in a popular Youtube presentation) where you might think the higher hp, turbo'd engine, would/should. Why?

It will be fun to have the power, but I don't plan on drag racing with my 4X. No sport mode needed for me.

Broncos today are much quicker than cars we considered quick back in the day. Like my 96 Mazda Miata M Edition. And slow ones were LOTs slower. Ever drive an 80s B-2000 pickup? I did. Or a 95 4-runner? I did. My current 2002 F-150 I've had since new is slower. Just because the last gasp of the internal combustion vehicle business is getting 300, 400, 500 horspower out of just about every car and truck doesn't mean you NEED it.

These new kids have a bloodlust for speed, and it's stupid. Their speeding is what's killing the rest of us.

Just look at the last Bronco. Even in 351 Windsor guise it only had 205 horsepower… and 3.55 axle gears.

Ouch.

I'm 60. 44 years no accidents used to drive 45,000+ miles/year
Its not the speeders, its the slow pokes.Speed differential is what kills people, if everyone went the same speed nothing would happen ,but the left lane bandits doing 50 in the fast lane is what causes problems.I don't go as fast as the soccer moms yakking on the phone and drinking a latte while putting on make up , they are the ones causing the accidents. They are worse than drunks.
Drive up and down the hills we have in New England every day and tell me you don't wish you had more power.I've never driven a 4 cylinder car that didn't need more power.
btw my bud had a B2000, it was the biggest slug I have ever driven. It felt like the parking brake was on in a 90 mph head wind.

and I don't want to get beat in the stoplight drags by a Jeep.

The Bronco on the TFL video was a Sasquatch Badlands, Those 35s serve a purpose off road and look cool but they are a lot of mass to get rotating and will slow things down In 0-60. In addition it carries additional armor that adds weight. If you really want to drag race a Bronco I would suggest an Outer Banks with the 2.7 That will be the fast one, now if you want to rock crawl you may want to stick with a Badlands and just realize what it's built for.

Its not the the mass, its what those big tires do to your final drive ratio.

The Sasquatch has lower gears to compensate for the 35s. Check the weight difference on a 32 all terrain against a 35 mud and it's quite a bit. Getting those big tires moving takes more energy.
