Cargo area cover / Rear parcel shelf

I created a cargo cover for the rear of my 4 door Bronco using a 2’ x 4’ piece of MDF that I covered in headliner fabric. I ordered some small D rings and a cargo net and once they arrive I will install on top so it can be used for extra storage. It’s a uper simple mod that will keep prying eyes out of the rear of my ride and should help from stuff flying out when the top is off too!

Sorry - I am terrible at documenting my mods and didn’t take pics along the way but always happy to share my creations once complete.

Basically, I bought a piece of 2x4 MDF 1/2” thick from Lowes and 1 yard of headliner fabric from JoAnns. I used Gorilla Tape to wrap all the edges of the MDF to provide extra protection from dings/dents to the MDF and to make sure the shelf won’t scratch the interior plastic panels or rattle when installed. I covered the underside with black vinyl. I then applied 3M Super 77 spray adhesive to the top, edges and perimeter of the underside of the board and affixed the fabric. Be sure to overlap the sides for extra protection - I used my staple gun on the underside of the board for extra mechanical adhesion making sure to leave a 3” border to avoid any contact with interior panels.

You can cover the board in any suitable fabric, paint, vinyl or just leave it plain MDF - the size is perfect and requires no cutting. The shelf can be easily added or removed as needed but I plan to leave it installed full time
The board fits vertically behind the rear seats when not in use or when you need to use the full size of the area. I’ll add some pics once I install the cargo accessories on top so it can then be used for storage too!

I've been looking all over for this thread and finally (obviously) found it.
Going to head to Lowes this weekend and see what I can find.

They have the MDF board already to the correct size?

No idea what your local stores offer but here there are in-store areas where the staff will cut a board/sheet to size for you (it's like...$0.10? $0.25?? a cut?)

I was fortunate and able to grab a Mapes panel cut off from the bone yard at a local glass shop.

I actually did this several months ago but forgot to post it. I told my wife she could do any color she wanted so she came up with this. She said there's not a lot of color in the interior so she decided to spice it up a little. She talked about switching the fabric for different times of the years. Always trying to keep her involved.
She put a layer on the bottom and then folded the top around the edges and used a staple gun to fasten everything to the board. It will be easy to remove the staples and put another fabric on it when ever she gets tired of the current one.
The only improvement I may do on the next redo, is to put a small lip on the back edge so things don't slide off. It will make putting fabric down a little more complicated but it will be worth it not having things slide off the shelf.

Thanks @Bschurr for the idea.

How much does the shelf mute the sound coming out of the back area?

Built mine yesterday. Pretty easy and straight forward. Thanks for the idea. Would note that the 2’x4’ board is not the exact size so there is a little bit of play/slide in it but not enough to be a major issue. Could probably add some small rubber feet to it to keep is from moving if you really wanted to.

Would also note that while I went with the 1/2” thick board, if you were thinking you are going to place heavy objects on it, I might err on the side of caution and use 3/4” thick instead.

Overall, very happy with the idea so thanks again!

I wrapped mine in a rubberized yardage from Walmart. Then stapled and trimmed the edges and seams in a black duct tape. Took up the extra space nicely and has slip resistance.

Bass/low frequency is omnidirectional so the shelf has no real effect. I installed a Kicker down firing 12” CompRT sub in the back and it sounds great! I doubt there would be any negative auditory issues with a factory sub either.

I've had no issues at all, but most of the things I put up there aren't all the heavy.

Got this the other day from CPCA. It is simply and folds up. I will use it when travelling. $100. Obviously not a shelf. Also folds down for half storage. @TK1215 made a nice shelf out of wood and a nice cover.

I have that GPCA in my Jeep JKU and it is awesome! I ordered one for my Bronco when they first offered them and it wasn’t compatible with my soft top. Can’t wait to check it out in the Braptor when the weather allows me to be topless (late spring)

Mine has slight sag. If I were going to rebuild it I would likely go up to the next thickest dimension.

After my original post had disappeared I never put in what board I used. I used a 3/4”x2’x4’ plywood handy panel from Home Depot. And the yardage I used, I picked up from my local Walmart. In the 10 months of use I have had a slight sag right in the middle where it is unsupported in the middle. Has worked really well, and I have put all sorts of things on top of it. And I like That it is easy to remove and install.
