In child psychology, there is a disciplinary approach called "extinction," which is to ignore bad behavior to (self-)-"extinguish" itself. If you don't respond or react, the theory goes, it will eventually just die out, un-reinforced. Now suppose a child was cheating in school. I can't imagine that ignoring it would end up correcting it. And bad habits and behavior learned in childhood grow up to create dysfunctional adults.

There should be some sort of "purple heart" for teachers when they retire. If you're still sane, "purple heart with oak leaf cluster."
