Yeah…. Interesting that folks would think this is something to laugh at… We’re likely all guilty of this at some point but fortunately we now know better…

Definitely guilty… killed many weeds on fence lines as a kid with 🦖 🩸 . Was normal. But it was being returned to the earth as Tim said.

They found out they did more damage trying to clean up the Valdez spill than if they left it alone. Oil occurs in nature and nature has a way of dealing with it.
As a manufacturing professional I know that bacteria eating water miscible cutting fluids is a problem.

The fact is but one: Prince William Sound is in even better shape than it was prior to the grounding of the Exxon-Valdez and the reason is petroleum is organic (food). When it’s in concentration it’s not good stuff but, as water breaks it up into the separate plant oils it once was, it becomes energy sources for various microbes which increase their population exponentially. This, in turn, attracts organisms which can use them for food, and on-and-on throughout the food chain.

The animals on the land and the birds in the air also reap the bounty and the population of everything increases.

In the Gulf of Mexico as many as 500 million barrels of petroleum seep from the ocean floor each and every year making the Exxon-Valdez pale in comparison. I’m not intimating the incident was no big deal, but as time has gone by it’s meaningless just as were the thousands of ships which went down into the deep during WWI and WWII.

Now I'm not saying you should dump used motor oil in your backyard, thats what neighbors are for, dump it in their backyard.👍

Maybe that’s harmless on a small level, but the number of contaminated wells across the country due to bad stuff dumped without regard would suggest it may be a problem…

Agree…. People used to dump trash in sink holes back then as well. Guess we all learned a lot.

I remember when I was a kid I watched as grown men were dumping oil down into the sewers. We always tend to do stupid things.
