Broken Windshield! Who has dealt with it?

So, I paid my registration for this year online and got the sticker tags in the mail.

You can imagine my surprise when I am all smiles headed out to the garage with my razor blade and new reg sticker (which is still good till Dec.) only to see a 2-inch crack right under the damn inspection and reg sticker! Son of a ...!

Has anyone gone through this replacement? I can't imagine the windshields are easy to get like everything else on these things. I know it will sound stupid, but I also have the green oval sticker stating American made in Wayne, Michigan Plant and I want that on the new one.

After thinking about it, there is a whole lotta crap on that windshield like the light dimmer sensor and I am sure all types of other computer crap. I am afraid to do it now fearing some Safelight kid doesn't know his ass from a corn hole.

I have "free windshield replacements," (yeah, free, my ass) we pay more each year for it as we both commute. I will say Allstate has been dolls with replacing every one in the past 5 years, but I am a little afraid with this Bronco. I think I am going to stay home for this one, unlike when the Kia Soul and Cooper were done; I just left the doors unlocked and both cars in the driveway.

My 1st windshield took a rock... about a year and a half ago. Went through insurance, told them I wanted to use a local shop (which they were fine with). Got the official Ford OEM replacement windshield. Had it installed on a Friday, the following Monday caught another rock going to work. This time I got smart, picked up some RainX windshield repair and filled the crack. Have since caught another rock, did the same. RainX windshield repair is a must in my opinion. Now I can wait to replace it when I feel like it, the cracks are not spreading.

Forgot to add, back then, the windshields were hard to come by. I believe I ended waiting something like 45+ days to get one. I'd imagine there are more of them out there by now.

This is true... The company that replaced ours advised of that and that they often arrive well damaged. They ordered two in anticipation -- and yep one arrived from Ford damaged.

Guess I'm going to be joining the club. Mine popped yesterday on the road during a road trip to FL. Gonna contact insurance and go from there. Will keep y'all posted...

I used Safelight no issues. These windshields break every year.

At some point I will be there with you. And mine will stay cracked until that crack distracts my driving or a police officer tells me I have to.
I have had chips repaired and have an aeroskin thing.
I drove Wranglers for decades. I would not be insurable if I replaced whenever they cracked. Could not get 2 weeks out of any of my new windshields.
I will find a protective film when I do replace it. The blowing sand here makes them all pitted.

I am on my 3rd Windshield. (2 new, MY21/Non Sas/BD). If you drive on the highway, a rock will likely spawn a cracked windshield. We are all driving glass picture windows. I was also told that cold morning autostart where the defrost is on blast can cause cracks as well. Ford, please take a deep look at this if you have not already. I have heard that heavy flex while off-roading will do the same. We don't rock crawl with heavy flex, but do spend work time in the mountains in variable snow, mud, class 2,3,4 trails and fire/mining roads.

I replaced the first via Insurance with Safelite but specified Ford OEM glass, which was installed at Safelite.
Initially, it seemed like they did a good job but it developed cracks within 2 months, which I felt were not impact related.
In my opinion, it should not have cracked but I was told by Safellite the cracks were "Impact" related.
Apparently microscopic meteorites can cause damage.

After about a 8 months, the cracks were closing in on each other and we had the third FORD OEM Windshield installed yesterday. This time, I specified my Ford Dealer bodyshop and the installation point. Oddly, insurance approved but still sent it through Safelite. It was physically installed at my dealer/service/body shop, and the body shop management, whom I trust, oversaw the installation and the finalization. The installer was familiar to the shop and my dealer did the final Q/A and delivery prep. I am hopeful but head to teh mountains for work next week so time will tell.

Moral of my story, if insurance will allow, SPECIFY OEM Ford Glass and direct the appointment to your dealer if they deal with servicing and replacing glass. That's it. Good luck all. Tend to any chips immediately! Lol

I do have two chips on my windshield fortunately about the size of a nickel and they haven’t cracked any further. I have 30k miles on this Bronco. I consider myself lucky after reading and looking at all the other posts that have been submitted. I just cringe whenever I am driving behind someone. Both chips came from small SUVs.

I would suggest getting a repair kit such as this before they do start to spread. I've had good luck with the small repair kits in the past.

Thank you for the suggestion! Do you suggest applying this in cold weather? I live in Michigan and the weather varies this time of year.

I can't suggest doing anything in cold weather that's why I live in the South ,lol.
I have only used it during the summer but did find this article on repairs in colder temps.
Remember if you do the repair indoors or in the shade that the epoxy cures with sunlihght or you must use a UV light in its absence.

I really appreciate this information. I will follow up on it. I have been knocking on lots of wood that the two stone chips didn’t start progressing across the windshield when the weather started changing up here. Thank you again

Appointment tomorrow. I'll keep you all posted, insurance told me it would be an extra $350 for factory glass. I declined, but will adjust coverage at next renewal, I have a feeling it won't be the last time...

7k miles and 7 months in. Safelite replaced it and re calibrated it perfectly. I had a choice of glass in after market or OEM. No issues since.

Mine was chipped badly about the same mileage as you. Safe lite replaced with an OEM windshield with the correct etchings. This was about a year ago and zero problems.

Unfortunately, many people have had broken windshields. Some have had multiple replacements. This is the very nature of this flat windshield. I had windshield protection film put on within the first week of ownership. It has saved me five to six broken windows. Do a search regarding broken windshields and you will find numerous posts and threads covering the topic that will provide options.

As a professional driver of 37 years I can tell you flat windshields don't break any more often than curved ones. That is a myth. In fact I've had more curved windshields damaged than flat ones over the years. Not sure why some people have this issue but I've had 3 6g Broncos all daily driven and not one problem.I will say all 3 have had the Aerotek bug shield could make difference.
