I believe auto start stop is hard on the engine and plugs no matter what a manufacturer may say. I also find it extremely annoying and a safety issue. I like to have power when I need power. I also don't believe I am saving the planet by using it. The planet is just fine. What do you think?
I think the companies include auto start/stop as one of the many methods to meet CAFE, and California CARB and EPA pollution requirements imposed on them. Has nothing to do with "saving the planet" one vehicle at a time and everything to do with compliance with government-imposed mandates.

Auto start/stop has no effect on the engine or plugs. The starter is a beefed-up version designed to handle the extra cycles.
what safety issue do you perceive? The engine starts by the time you get your foot from the brake to the accelerator. If you aren't first in line at the lift, you're probably not going anywhere, anyway. And if you did decide to move, you have to consider where you would go that wouldn't get you into as much or more trouble (drive into the intersection and risk a T-bone that would be your fault?)
You'll need somewhere between 5-7 seconds of engine off to equal gas consumed by restarting. On average, you will save 3-4% in mixed use driving, 7%+ in more city-centric driving. Burning less fossil fuel is definitely better for the planet and all of its inhabitants. It I don't think any of this is going to change your mind.

I am not sure what engines you have been around and how you can say it is not hard on the engine but you can believe whatever you want. I enjoy burning gas. It is one thing I have always enjoyed. I like to burn as much as possible, whenever possible. So no it will not change my mind.

I have met EPA scientists. Friends who are also involved in those kinds of things (the Sierra Club) brought one to my house. They have a time share close to my place and they started to take the train rather than drive their hybrid. So they asked me if they could store some scientific gear at my place for when they come since they can't take it on the train. It has been there over ten years and they don't come anymore because of his unfortunate health. I can assure you it is about saving the planet. They are crazy about that. Nice people, just don't believe what they believe and I am positive they don't believe what we do. Why do you think the government imposes those mandates?
Why do I think the government imposes the mandates? If I were paranoid I'd say because it gives the government agencies (local, state, and federal) another method of controlling what people are allowed to do - and another avenue to extract money from them. Is there a climate problem? I don't think we really know since the government funds only one type of climate investigation - the kind that gives them the answers they want. I'd suggest doing some reading on your own starting with "Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn't, and Why It Matters," by Steven E. Koonin. You'll soon find out that what you're being told isn't necessarily factual and doesn't represent a complete picture of climate.

I totally agree it’s unsafe. If you are stopped at a light and need to get out of there fast (impending read-ender, car jacking, freak incident) you are screwed. How many lawsuits will it take to fix it?
I've been driving since the early '80s and have yet to have a single situation where I was stopped at a light and about to be rear-ended. Let alone stopped where I could actually do anything about it. Where would you go? You can't smash the vehicle in front or to the side. Go into the intersection and risk a T-bone, being at fault for the accident, and possibly seriously injured? Car jacking--same scenario. But maybe avoid areas where that is a possibility. But above all that, by the time you move your foot from brake to accelerator, the engine is running, so even if you found yourself in one of these obscure scenarios, you'll have all the same options available to you.

So, do you believe you can extrapolate your empirical experiences onto everyone else? I've been driving since 1965 and I can tell you that I've been in at least five situations where I was able to drive out of a potential accident. As an example, I was at a stop light with a box-type delivery truck in front of me. The driver was not paying attention and the truck was slowly creeping backwards. I used the horn to no avail, finally backed up as much as I could, and then moved into the right turn lane to avoid being hit by the truck.

Yep, hate it also. Since I was already using Forscan to change a few things, I went ahead and turned off A.S.S. also.
Eezy Peezy.
How is that done with Forscan. I have never used it.

Cool . So not using a.S.S. should ensure my starter will last much longer. LOL
One strange thing I have noticed and have replicated is when I forget to turn A.S.S. off and stop to let the wife get out to check the mail the engine will sometimes stop at the same time she opens the door. When this happens her power step will not deploy and she will have to close the door and reopen for it to work. Apparently A.S.S. is going to cause excessive wear on my passenger door and window mechanism.

This is starting to turn into a conversation where we are talking about “what is your favorite flavor of Ice Cream” and having someone say “well my favorite flavor is the candy cane I put on my Christmas Tree every year, you know, the tree I got that stands about 6’ high and is a blue spruce.”
“I also bought it at a Dollar Store where they carry hose clamps, I think I only paid $1.20 for.”
“I wonder why they call them Dollar Stores if everything in the store is above a Dollar.”
Please keep the conversation going about what the OP has posted in his Thread. 😉

Here is the thread that showed me how to use Forscan https://www.bronco6g.com/forum/thre...k-sport-mode-chimes-seatbelts-and-more.28489/ . It may seem intimidating at first but its really easy. Just make sure you save your stock settings so if anything goes wrong, you can reload them. I used it to remove the double honk, A.S.S. and changed my front turn signal lamps to amber. A few other things can be done also but I haven't messed with them yet. The software is available free or you can purchase. Also you will need to get an adapter to bridge from your laptop to your vehicle.
There are plenty of Youtube channels out there that can show you how also.
Good luck!

Don't know if it is a feature of the paid program or not ( I paid for a 3 year license ) but on my Ranger everything was spelled out and I just clicked Enable/Disable for the features I wanted to change . There were 3 different spots across 2 modules that I had to select disable to turn off A.S.S. on my Ranger to keep from seeing the light on the dash and to keep the battery monitoring circuit working as it should . So far I have only connected to my Bronco once to turn off the dbl horn honk and to enable the subwoofer output in the factory harness. Disabling the A.S.S. will be next , I just haven't had the time.

I have been in a situation where I was rear ended, stopped in the road because a tractor trailer decided to make an illegal right turn from the left lane of a dual 2-lane highway. I was the first car to have to stop because the truck driver blocked both lanes of traffic.
Thank God after a second it suddenly dawned on me I was a sitting duck. Sure enough I look in the rear view mirror and here comes a lady in an Acura RDX with the fear of Jesus on her face. She was trying to steer right and I smartly had my car in 1st gear with foot on the clutch. I jumped left while the Acura was steering right. I opened up just enough space between us where the Acura's left front wheel hit my right rear wheel, both plastic bumper covers giving way so the tires met full force. The road speed limit was 45 MPH; the Acura was doing every bit of 45 MPH.
The Acura went right, past me on two wheels (Joey Chitwood style), riding the right side down the guardrail on the shoulder. Thankfully the Acura ended up back on its four wheels, stopped, all air bags deployed and the lady scared shitless. Me and my Z4 Coupe ended up with a broken right rear suspension and $11K of body damage.
The few milliseconds it takes the engine to restart with ASS would have shortened or maybe eliminated the gap I was able to create, which saved my life or avoided a severe back injury at the least (there is about 30" of trunk space between the bumper of a Z4 to the seatback of the driver's chair). The Acura was rear-ended by a fully occupied crew cab F350 towing a 16' trailer full of road paint striping equipment.
My 4 decades of motorcycle riding has taught me to remain in gear with the engine lit in case there is a emergency. ASS is antithetical to that protocol...

^^ This . Over the years I witnessed 4 motorcycles rear ended at stop lights with one being a close friend. Always leave room for an out to either side of a vehicle in front of you and keep it in gear.
